I would watch that as a series. Would be great for Techquickie, as the videos could be about single fonts and could be short in length. Might be a bit too niche, but this was the top comment, so I could be wrong.

Few suggestions for future(?): 2:10 - I think that showing the actual bitmap font used with the computers mentioned in the script would be a better idea. (and not funnily colored picture of a bitmap font remake) This gives a false impression that fonts can carry color or graded transparency information. 2:20 - Replacing the linear interpolation with no interpolation at all (nearest neighbor) would better show aliasing, and the computers in mentioned era did not apply this kind of interpolation anyway. 2:30 - This image would look better with no interpolation. The semi-smooth edges make it look as if it were a low-quality image. 2:58 - I believe this explanation could be made more comprehensible if "[...] how lines and curves relate to one another." would be replaced by "[...] lines and curves which outline the letters" or something along those lines. 3:20 - Replace your logo with a font based one for high-dpi displays. 4:00 - Using an enlarged subpixel-antialiased font only raises more questions to the viewer than it helps to answer. I would consider using a grayscale antialiasing or explaining how this type of antialiasing works. :>

There's actually more going on in ClearType: since pixels on your screen are typically arranged in red-green-blue or blue-green-red order, by displaying red for the right edges of a line, or blue for the left edge of a line, you effectively triple your horizontal resolution in exchange for your text looking slightly more colorful than they should.
@BrendanWeibrecht
@BrendanWeibrecht 8 жыл бұрын
This is what I wanted to say. It ends up looking so much better than greyscale anti-aliasing. There should probably be an annotation to amend that section of the video. Otherwise, a great watch =)

Love this! We talked a lot about typefaces and fonts in my Intro to Multimedia class, and apparently there are a lot of words we use to refer to text that are from back when it was all done on printing presses by hand. For example, leading, referring to the spaces between lines of text, comes from when they used to put actual pieces of lead in between the rows of letters to space them out! Please do that typeface psychology video :D

From a designer: Comic Sans has a purpose. You use it for children and people with learning disabilities. It was designed to be a friendly, open font that was very easy to read (why it has a large x-height). The problem is people use it for anything but that... No, you want to get a typographer foaming at the mouth you talk about Papyrus. Bad font, designed badly, for a bad purpose in a way that's kind of racist when you think about it. And hipsters love Helvetica because hipsters know little to nothing about fonts other than that Helvetica is really well designed. And it is. It's just about as vanilla a font as you can get. Give me Frutiger. Clean, well designed and man, that humanist curve.

It is, at best, a face-level caricature of one of the most ancient civilizations in human history. It's insultingly badly designed. It's clip art in typographic form. I'd be insulted if I was Egyptian.
@DesoloSubHumus
@DesoloSubHumus 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it racist. Historical abomination? Maybe, but not racist. Even then, it's just what the typeface was named, and the connotation (not denotation) that it was even Egyptian at all is purely imaginative. Honestly, it may have made just as much sense to call it something like 'Curvy Sand Erosion' or ' Infested Eucalyptus Leaves' instead, which would not have seemed like an insult to anything, but still, it is just a name. It's not like it's based on actual Ancient Egyptian writing. If anything, calling it 'Papyrus' still makes sense, anyway - just think of the actual papyrus plant and the the civilization that first used it to make paper. Papyrus leaves are long and tapered, just like the Papyrus font. www.google.com/search?q=papyrus+plant+images Is it overused? Yes. Are there thousand of better typefaces out there? Yes. If it had never become so popular due to Apple including it with their OS, would we hate it as much as we do otherwise? Probably not. Let's face it, the most hated fonts (Comic Sans, Papyrus, Times New Roman, Arial, etc.) all have one thing in common: they have been included in one OS or another as a factory installed font. If Frutiger were factory installed as a default in an OS tomorrow, Frutiger would be included in the list of 'ugliest fonts ever' ten years from now, no matter how beautiful it actually is when judged purely on its own merits and not on how overused or improperly used it is.

@Balomis

I was so happy when you started by saying typeface instead of font! Don't give in to the masses Luke, stay strong! Also, there is mistake in the video. A typeface is exactly how you described it, the various styles of characters. However a font is not just the variation of weight and angle in a type family. A font is actually the physical file type: so a ".otf" is a font (an OpenType Font to be exact) where as "Futura Bold" is a typeface. Calling typefaces fonts is kinda like calling songs MP3s. As a designer, I'm kinda passionate about this stuff ;)

Impact was called MEMES in the video. Forget Comic Sans, how about a follow-up on why people like myself (I can't be the only one) hate Times New Roman? My best hypothesis (for myself, at least) is that it's the only typeface suitable for school reports and, for the longest time, I hated writing, so seeing it too much made me hate it.

I actually love Times New Roman, it's just so simple, eligible and beautiful at the same time. TNR and Baskerville are probably my two favourite fonts (for day to day life, because they are other much more "creative" or silly ones that I like). The one I hate the most has to be Arial, it's so boring and over used that I hate it. And I obviously also hate Comic Sans... But I get your point, every one have different opinions

Cleartype wasn't about just using some colors, but about using the parts of a pixel to anti-alias - ie, the red or blue parts. That's why you get red or blue (or green, in some cases) corners to your letters where it tried to use only that subpart of a pixel, and why it always looks terrible when zoomed in, as you use the left half of X pixels, which does not actually help.

I remember when typefaces pertained to the print characters from a typewriter, which characters had similar sizes. Each alphabet, number, punctuation mark and some symbols similar sizes. Each alphabet, number, punctuation marks, and some symbols had the same width and height measurements that can fit into a one-inch line was called "pitch." There were four pitch sizes: "10" as the largest pitch, "12," "15," and "17" pitch as the smallest on some electronic typewriters. Very few typewriters had one design font added. Printer fonts are flexible because all characters do not have the same measurements as do typefaces. Some characters are taller and deeper than others, especially font characters with serifs on them. I have seen printer fonts derived from Adobe Linotype typesetters, which computer and manufacturers emulated to add to their computer and printer drivers and software. I would prefer to use typefaces on checks, small cards and some forms; I prefer to use printer fonts on everything else.👍
