learning about the generics of the game helped me immensely when I was just starting out. Originally I thought that EVERY character had ENTIRELY different moves, but being able to break every character down into having about 5-8 really common generic moves like jab, df1, ws4, etc made things a lot easier to take in.

Great video. I don't like thinking of homing moves as generics though. It's more accurate to say "homing" is a move property like crushing that a move can have rather than a category of moves

Great video!! An addition to crouch jabs: you can cancel the crouch state by holding/pressing forward. This way you can do standing moves after a crouch jab.

generics fall into fundamentals and it's the key to making characters in tekken more accessible. I managed to figure this one out when I spent a ton of time labbing characters in the game but i didn't know it's called like that since this video. found you as recommended after blasted salami's videos and I don't regret clicking on it.

I am just starting to really study generics recently. I never really saw the similarities because my main /first character is Lucky Chloe, who’s df1 and df2 looks unique, and doesn’t have a magic 4. So when I tried playing Julia and Jin i didn’t really see immediate similarities among various characters not to mention I was still very combo -centric . Glad to learn about generics now tho .

Nice video, definitely subscribing. Another kind of generic tool some characters share is the d/f 4 fishhook a 12f mid that's negative, but safe and doesn't give anything on NH or CH except for some characters. I do believe Katarina's version of this generic tool is a bit different than most others, though. Another example of an exception is Leo's d/f,2 which is negative on block but doesn't launch crouching opponents either, so the worst of both, but compensates with amazing reach and in most cases takes the place of the hopkick, which in Leo's case has one of,if not the shortest, ranges among the whole cast, maybe AK is worse, not really sure though. But I digress, nice video, hope to see more stuff from you soon ^.^

Great video! I just feel you should've emphasized more that generic moves, or lack thereof, do not necessarily make or break a character provided they compensate for it by excelling in different areas. Far too many people, seem to put too much stock in having an i15 df2. They act as if a character is inferior or not worth playing if they lack this generic. Yet they'll overlook the fact that Steve does not possess an i15 launcher (along with other generics) but is still considered top5 in the game because he has strong tools in other areas. Same with Master Raven and Bob who lack certain generics but more than make up for it with their other strengths. It is important to understand generics but it is also important to note that some generics are not the be all and end all of Tekken.

A lot of things you say are hard to follow visually. Your presentation is beautiful, voice is great, I absolutely can’t follow what you’re saying while watching, because I’m constantly rushing my ability to learn- learning nothing. Since I have to keep backdashing the video, I’m at 3:30 and I can’t take it anymore. Please continue to make videos. A good way to learn about generics is by watching and listening to competitive tekken, evo matches or the like. The commentators will point out and use many generic terms to a wide variety of characters, terms such as df1, magic 4. The professional level of play by the players will help you learn the game too, as the commentators will also point out when moves are punished or should be punished etc.

@KeithJamesChua 4 жыл бұрын
While that is the origin of the term, Jin's standing 4 is still a Magic 4. The definition of a Magic 4 is to be a fast high kick that launches on counterhit. I'm sitting here as a VF player going like, "Generics?" You mean your fundamental moves? Which in VF, have moves, "generic" or not, each cover a speed for balance of that character. You Tekken cats'll call it, "Generic" because it doesn't grant you a NH combo starting like a hell sweep or for just existing. The games too busy telling everyone to combo instead of playing fundamentals and videos like this need to exist as well as JDCR explaining jabs. Ya'll are clowns dancing around taking 2 yrs before you decide to hit anyone and walk up for a mix-up. Don't get me started on the movement being designed around the D-Pad and its quicksand speed. Tekken chose flash over substance which may have kept relevant (In the west). VF never died. Ya'll went to Tekken and gave up on a true sportsman's game. I'm being passive-aggressive because why is it VF has taught me the necessary fundamentals of a 3D game in order for me to hang in Tekken? Trust me, if people started with VF, they'd understand (At least try to make sense) some of the Tekken situations sooner.

In VF all elbows or necessary mids are 14Fs, all "Low jabs" or 2Ps here are 12Fs, this helps characters who have 12F jabs fight 11F jabbers.If I block an elbow, I can beat an attempted elbow with my elbow. DF1 should be -3 which is akin to VF's -4, that is a safer response than Jab or 2P. If someone blocks your -4 attack, you can crouch dash and guard to avoid throws and elbow respones. (Akira & Taka being exceptions). Unless a move is designed to track one way, it will tell you the direction to evade it. Things will not magically track you or hit you when you're already behind someone. If you hit a button on evade, it will then track. This is all moves in order to keep honesty. No one's sidestep is better than others. That is a system mechanic with 0 bias. If someone doesn't use the appropriate framed punish after guarding, the opponent can still sidestep you given it was linear. You have the triangle system in which Strikes beat Throws, Throws beat Guard and Guard beats Strikes. No exception or situations where people grab attack animations.

All characters are designed with this philosophy and simultaneously all play unique. Everything covers a strength or weakness for each character based on the perceived Yomi potential. Aoi has Sabakis? Ok, your punishment on block is lowered, evade or master Sabakis. Kage can't launch? Ok, you get extra wall juggles and combo Throws. Taka too fat to juggle? Ok, everyone incl. Yourself get natural hit strings, no counter hit needed. Mix-up heavy characters get juggled longer. To name a few.
