Happy Halloween, Tolkien geeks!
Today we take a look at Tolkien's vampire creatures: from Sauron and Thuringwethil in the tale of Beren and Lúthien; to the bats of Dol Guldur, which Bilbo and Thorin's company encounter during the Battle of Five Armies in The Hobbit.
What do you think are the scariest monsters in Tolkien's Legendarium?

Great video, wish Tolkien did more with the vampires. Maybe Tolkien loved deep in his heart Stoker and didn't want people to romanticise the most heinous of his villains as folks have done with Dracula who was not supposed to be romanticised, rather the novel tries to elevate Helsing, Harker & Mina as the sexy/awesome ones.

Another Tolkien Vampire video :) A channel called the Red Book covered this last month but I suppose they are so mysterious that there isnt a lot to talk about when it comes to the vampires!

So regarding the question what creeped me out the most: easy to pick actually, it is the gut-wrenching song that the Barrow-Wight recites. If you only catch a glimpse of how fundamental song is to Arda, then you may feel (like me) deeply disturbed by the announcement of darkness and the breaking of Sun and Moon. His words cover the most explicitly formulated and serious threat to all that is good in the world. Personally I also feel a bit of horror (though much less) when I think about the passage in the chapter Riddles in the Dark where it is described that the original inhabitants of the caves are not orcs... something unknown in the dark is quite scary. I am however not so much scared by the Nameless Things, mostly because I don't see a scenario where I would encounter them; unlike Gandalf, I would not survive a fall from the bridge of Khazad-dûm. What about you, Dan?

I think the Mewlips are the scariest. They have never existed and have just been a story made by parents to keep their kids from danger, but the story about them is very eerie.

Good call! There is a great stop motion animation that someone made of that poem, on KZfaq!

@@VoiceofGeekdom Well, Steven's video is where I learned about them in the first place. The only Tolkien stop motion animation videos I have seen are from Lore of the Rings. I will check if he did one.

Great video. Happy Halloween, Dan. I think the Paths of the Dead was some of the spookiest stuff in the series, personally. Definitely not on top of the list, but it's up there for me.

Cheers Shawn! It is spooky, but in the context it's also very mythic and heroic, and wonderfully described as such. I should do some content on the Dead Men of Dunharrow at some point.

One objection to the video: Barad Dur does not be connected with Transylvania, more like with Italyr, mount Doom being connected with the volcano Stromboli. Transylvania seems to be more like the location of lake Cuivienen.
