Today we talk about some of the bench clearing brawls I was a part of in the MLB. Antonelli Baseball is the #1 online resource for baseball instruction. We breakdown the mechanical aspects of hitting, fielding, throwing, and base running to make them easy to understand and actionable. We also cover the mental side of baseball and offer college baseball recruiting advice. We delve into the details that you will not find anywhere else.

In the 80's and 90's there were bench clearing brawls in college baseball. One, where Toi Cook, of Stanford, and a future NFL DB, started a huge brawl. I think it was vs USC. The NCAA put in a rule that has basically eliminated bench clearing brawls.

I've been a baseball fan since I was a kid, but to me, one of the stupidest things is watching the bullpens empty and jog 300+ feet, usually just to find a "dance" partner. The NHL put in a rule back in the late '80s similar to NCAA's which basically eliminated bench-clearers in hockey... why, now 35 years later, can't MLB do the same? Regardless, I really enjoy these videos - thanks for making/posting them.

I worked as a batboy for a minor league team one year. My father said when there's a fight I should go up to the away team's best player and deck him. That way, when he makes it to the majors I can say I decked him. I said "Are you crazy, I'm usually the away team's batboy. They'd get me!" I remember seeing a fight the Mets had in the '80s on TV. Someone pushed Gary Carter against a wall and a fan poured his beer on Carter's head. :)

As a hockey player back in the day, I got involved in a few scraps. Hockey "unwritten rules" say to pair up and let the two fighters have at it. So a fight broke out and I paired up with a guy and expected to watch the action. Heck I didn't really like the guy from my team. So I had no intention of entering the fray. For some reason the other team decides to clear the bench and jump into the action. Some big lug from the other team goes for me. He had me by 30 pounds and a few inches. My saving grace was my skating ability. He tackled my around the waist. But I backed up which made him go flat on the ice. Which resulted in him flat and me kneeling over him. I pulled his jersey over up to block his arms.and sat out the rest of the fight. As the fight cleaned up the ref came by and said let him up I'll be back. I said hell no. I told him to stay if he wanted me to let this wild man lose. I wasn't going to give him another shot at me. So some how I be came the dressing room hero for taming this guy. Little do they know he did it to himself.

Matt, really enjoy your videos! Only come across them a couple days ago, but enjoy them tremendously. At 64, I still love the game of baseball. As a matter of fact I still played competitive softball with the kids (not really kids, mid twenties and up) that is until one of these muscle bound brutes hit a ball back at me (I either pitched of maybe played 1st) anyway, the ball came off the triple wall mica bat at me so fast I didn't even have time to move my glove except to try and cover my face and head! It broke "3" ribs, and I decided that playing ball in your late 50"s against "kids" wasn't too Danny smart! After playing of "2" State High School championship teams, upon graduation our "Uncle Sam" wanted me for his man's army! After getting out, I landed a great job with the railroad. But surprisingly out of nowhere, I received a form letter offering me a tryout with the Cincinnati Reds. I was ecstatic, that is until I found out how little a minor league player actually made and there was no way I was going to quit the railroad making his great of money as I was, to go out and make little over minimum wage. Anyway, it is so refreshing to hear and listen to your ball experiences. Sadly, kids are now interested in scenes in soccer more than baseball and it breaks my heart. I always have and will always be a baseball player in lover in my Heart Soul and Spirit. Keep the videos coming,.love them.

When I played I was always taught, even from little league, that during a fight you never wrap up your own own players to peel them out of the brawl. You don't wanna take your own players arms away from them to protect themselves you always wrap up players from the other team to break up the brawl. when I watch Big League brawls this unspoken rule doesn't seem to exist. `

It happened to me today. Ng throw from center to home. My catcher was on the horse to home. Cut off man fires to him. Pitcher cut the ball. Pitcher kinda was agresiva on the tag. I was managing so my job is to protect my players and make sure they don't get ejected. I did tell the pitcher to drill the leadoff man. That's part of the game.
