While you are sleeping, you go through a number of 90-minute sleep cycles. During in each cycle, you go through four sleep stages.
During stage one, also known as light sleep, you are sleeping, well, lightly. This stage lasts for between one and seven minutes. When you are in light sleep, your breathing and heartbeat start to slow down, but it is very easy to wake up if you hear a sound.
Now, during stage two, you are sleeping a little more deeply. In this stage, called intermediate sleep, your breathing and heartbeat continue to slow. It is a little harder to wake up during this stage, but you will wake feeling refreshed.
When you reach stage three, deep sleep or slow-wave sleep, you are sleeping much more deeply. Your breathing and heartbeat are very slow, but your muscles and bones grow and heal. This is a rejuvenating stage of sleep.
Finally, you get to stage four, REM sleep. During REM sleep, your heart rate and breathing increase and become irregular. Your eyes start to move quickly behind your eyelids, and your most vivid dreaming occurs.
It is good to consider this information if you like to take a nap. You don’t want to wake up during a later stage (like three or four) because you will feel very groggy. It is better to nap for around 20 minutes so that you are only in stage two or nap for a full 90 minutes so that you have gone through the full cycle.

we human don't just sleep the same time and wake up the same day due.. to what we do are not the same.. i do had some issue that i can not sleep like one of two time a week.. however... i can adjust my sleep due to being a business owner.. and i had been dealing with it since my school day... best thing to deal with it is you just had to accept that tonight you might not get any sleep and yes you will feel like shit.. but it will be over..

Anurag Sosa teenage years are probably the best years of your life socially. So to decide between sleeping at 10 (which is considered early for most teens) or to stay up later or go out later is a tough thing to do. If schools started later and finished later then it would greatly increase productivity. Especially since many studies show that a teenagers brain doesn’t reach full wakefulness until atleast 11am

is there anyway for us to shorten the sleep cycle? a little bit of my personal experience, there are times when i wake up in the morning and feels like i don't get enough sleep and i'll just hit the snooze button (it's bad i know) and what happen is really weird.. i'm sure i feel like i'm falling back asleep, like into a deep sleep and when i wake up i thought "oh no, i must've miss my alarm since i didn't heard it anymore after i hit the snooze button" but when i look at my phone it's only been 1 minute since i hit the snooze button (my snooze last for about 5 minutes). the weird thing is i feel refreshed as if i have slept for 7 hours during that 1 minute. i can't control this and it just happen randomly.. i experience this a few time already. anyone else who has the same experience as me? and if anyone else know about the theory behind this or better, how to trigger this condition, mind sharing it with me?

How does this correlate to waking up during REM cycles and getting sleep paralysis or simply not being fully asleep but still having your body undergo the physical conditions of REM sleep? Anytime I try too hard to focus on getting a good amount of sleep I wake up with paralysis or simply don't sleep but still experience paralysis (though my body does feel rested afterwards). Not too concerned since I've become adept at exiting it and remaining calm but it is annoying and I would prefer to routinely wake up at stage 2

So if I’m understanding correctly we want to sleep at least eight hours depending on our age and within that eight hours we want to make sure that we reach all four stages in each 90 minute sleep cycle for the duration of eight hours. How do we make that happen though? How do we make our bodies hit all four stages? Is the first step to figuring out what time our body needs to start to go to bed? And I’m assuming this is different for each person? So is that called circadian rhythm and how do we figure that out?

So seems to be more important we sleep for multiples of full sleep cycles. 4 cycles would be 6 hours, 5 cycles would be 7.5 hours, 6 cycles would be 9 hours. Question is how many cycles do we subjectively need. Should we omit the alarm and wake naturally to avoid waking during stage 3 or 4

why is readinga book ok and reading a screen isnot ok? Isn't it about your brain working in comprehending the text? Is it really about actual ligt from the screen (as in if you read the same text from the paper it is ok, but the exact same text from the phone - not ok)?

So if you wake up several times to go to the toilet, then go back to sleep. Do you carry on from the sleep cycle you were in prior to waking up? Thanks for the great video!!

so it doesn't depend on how many hours you should sleep but how to complete yr sleep cycle so if i sleep maybe 3 hours so it's okay? i know i should sleep more but i just give u an example

Sleep duration is important too. Understanding your sleep cycle is helpful in knowing when to set your alarm. 3 hours is indeed too short. Experts say you should be getting between 7 and 9 hours each night.

woah 4 sleep stages in a sleep cycle, super informative about each stage. Thanks marten! First 3 fall under non-rapid eye movement to REM sleep. 😴 stage ONE : light sleep 1-7 minutes, wakefulness to sleep. Brain and heart activity starts slowing down. Stage TWO : intermediate sleep about 25 minutes, muscle, and everything else slows down as temperature lowers. Stage THREE: deep sleep. Muscles growing and immune system is strengthening. Important for athletes or people that workout lol it’s okay marten, i don’t workout either but i love my sleep ☝🏽💓 Breathing slow, heart rate is slow, hard to wake up during stage 3. If you wake up you’ll wake up groggy. 😖😖😖 Stage FOUR: rapid eye movement. body going into beast mode, blood pressure goes up, heart beat increases and beat being becomes more irregular and legs and arms are paralyzed. Learning is happening, memories are being stored 😍 I love to nap but i always wake up at the WORST times. 10-30 mins napping feel rested but after that, you’ll wake up groggy but a full 90 minute, you’ll go back to feeling refreshed. proper sleep we should be getting: teens 14-17: 8-10 hours 18-64: 7-9 hours 65+: 7-8 hours Yikes i definitely am not getting the sleep i need 😭 Make sure bedroom is cool, dark and quiet for help in getting some good sleep. Zomgggg i need some blackout curtains 😍 sleep mask and ear plugs and same sleep schedule even on weekends will be helpful to keep a good rhythm. Having caffeine in the evening could disrupt your sleep ☕️ and think about what you’re eating 🍽 Don’t eat chicken wings an hour before sleep 😂 got it. No laptops or electronics before bed. So so so smart, I’m on my phone for “5 minutes” and before i know it, I’ve been online for hourssss. My goodness. I’m going to start doing my homework right before bed because that ALWAYS puts me straight to sleep 😂😂😂 Thanks marten! Mattress clarity is genius as always! (I’m going to ignore that alcohol comment though 😂) This is such dope information, i had no idea. I sweaaaar mattress clarity has taught me more than all 4 of my classes this semester 😂 love coming home to new mattress clarity videos lol
