Excellent video. This really helps me understand the difference between traditional paints and the hydrus line. You sample paintings were very nice and informative. Even though they are the same image, the materials go down on paper in different ways and seeing the difference helps because I am a visual learner!

I purchased the Hydrus watercolors after watching so many of your videos and loving the vibrant colors. I thought I was purchasing the same ones you had, only to realize that you were using the radiant line instead. I found these at Micheals and was able to use a 50% coupon so they were really affordable for me. Thankfully, soon after you posted the video about Hydrus being better because of their lightfast ability so I was happy I didn't screw up. I also love them with my Koi watercolors (both tube and pan). Love your videos they inspire me!

I have to say that this video really helped me out. I've been watercoloring for huevember this year and it's nothing like when I've watercolored in the past. But your comments about how much brighter the paints are and how they're harder to make pastely make me feel like I'm not just doing everything wrong. It's also helped to shift my mindset to understand that this is a bit more like painting digitally, with regards to how I have to treat the colors, and a little less like traditional painting. I also really liked what you said about the staining because I wondered if I was just making my palette too pigmented because I couldn't lift back up and I never considered that these were working a bit more like inks than anything. Just, thank you. Your raised a lot of valid points and this was so helpful.

I started with opaque watercolor, so I don't anticipate a very long adjustment with these, but different products do take time to get where you want to be. I actually had a harder time with transparent watercolor because I was use to opaque. It takes experimenting, time and practice. Control of water is always a problem with someone new to water based mediums, but it is also a struggle with professionals sometimes .I'm still very much a beginner, but I'm comfortable with using traditional watercolors. I love your video and the time and effort you take to bring this information to us. The best thing is the positive nature of your videos. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for this, it does def. help to see the difference on paper. I have a question - I'm an art journaler, and I'd like to make some spray paints from inks, so they are permanent. Is there a brand that you would recommend for this? I was thinking bombay inks but there are also fluid acrylic inks and I'm not certain what the differences are. Hope this all makes sense?

I love my hydrus watercolours. But I wouldn't recommend using then straight out of the bottle, dilute them with water! They will be more able to lift that way. They work more like inks (which is what I'm more used to) The only con for me (like she said in the video) is if you don't enjoy the vibrancy so this video is a fair review !!

Hi Jess. If you go back and look at the side by side comparison, she has the containers of the paint brand she used by their corresponding painting. The Hydrus bottles are on the top left of the left painting and the Winsor and Newton tubes are on the lower right corner of the painting on the right.

Hello again! sorry for spamming all your videos with comments! Just wanted to say again this is really useful to me.. especially with the comparison of the two paintings ... I was just lamenting the lack of vibrancy of the hydrus compared to the Radiant line but I can see that compared to traditional water colours the hydrus are still hella vribrant!! Also, it occurs to me that were you're talking about the paints being "staining" you seem to be commenting on their water-fastness? Dr Martin actually describe the Hydrus range as "waterproof" which would mean you could actually use them for outlining and paint over them like windsor and newton's black indian ink or other "permanent ink" pens. This isn't a question so much as maybe a terminology thing, as it seems to me that all watercolours "stain" to some extent ? ... mind you, I'm a noob, so what do I know? XD Thanks again! .:Kat:.
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 3 жыл бұрын
In watercolor, the term "staining" is applied to pigments that do not lift when rewet. For instance, Pthalos and some Quinacridones are incredibly staining, and once you make a mistake, it will not lift no matter how much you swipe at it with water. There are watercolors that need one or 2 passes to get back the white of the paper, and that's why watercolor is seen as more forgivable than acrylics or oils. The Hydrus line having a "staining" characteristic means that these paints need extra care during use, but the good news is that they're the best paints to glaze over without disturbing the layer underneath.

Nery Padron I was going to comment that but I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. Though, they are both watercolor paints so maybe it’ll just merge the properties of both paints? Or Hydrus will just overtake the Radiant and maybe just behave a little differently since Hydrus is thicker and stronger I think.

I'm thinking of ordering these or the Radiant. I'm new to lettering. Which do you feel are best? It's mostly going to be used for planner, journals, and cards for other people. (Anyone who can answer would help)
@gracecatan1149
@gracecatan1149 6 жыл бұрын
Ivon G. If you are planning to give other people the original pieces, then you should probably use the hydrus line because the radiant line is not lightfast and the colors will fade after a while. If you are having the original pieces photographed or scanned, then it's just personal preference. I would recommend the radiant line for lettering because it's a really good consistency for lettering. You should also consider the fact that you can't lift the hydrus line from paper and it behaves more like ink compared to the radiant line which behaves more like traditional watercolors, just in a liquid form. If you will do backgrounds with the watercolors as well, the radiant would probably be better because it blends a bit better in my opinion. Just my thoughts because i also do lettering and will get the radiant line (set a) soon. I hope this was helpful🙂

I thought of my paints were more goopy than other's and Dr. PH Martin's sent me new ones, but they are nearly the same consistency. It's the raw/burnt browns, and a few others. One of my purples os super bad. Is it normal for some to be thicker than others? They paint just as well the new bottles I was sent, and both are thicker so I don't know. >
@PumpkinPails
@PumpkinPails 8 жыл бұрын
Is it the ultramarine red violet? If it is, it's not supposed to be goopy. I had mine replaced and the new one is so much better. The old one had this grape jelly consistency and when you dropped it onto paper, even it it was wet, it would just blob there. It wouldn't bloom like the other colors. The raw umber, burnt umber, and red oxide I'm not sure about. They react differently than the other colors, for sure but I have no clue if that's how they're supposed to be. Please, let me know if you find out.

@kayin3287
@kayin3287 8 жыл бұрын
+GummyTumor Yep! It was Ultramarine Violet Red! It also has a funny smell, and when dried leaves speckled pigment, but it moved for wet on wet. :/ So, I tested some of the new ones that I was sent VS the old ones, and some were extremely different the old Burnt Sienna vs the new were like two different paints. Obviously, the new one I was sent was better. But I also tried with red oxide and neither would do wet on wet, and had the same properties, it seemed. So I can't tell which ones are defective, or if it's just property of the paint. It's a bit frustrating. D;
@PumpkinPails
@PumpkinPails 8 жыл бұрын
+Kayin +Kayin It is pretty frustrating. I ordered a set through Dick Blick and when I asked for replacements they sent me two red oxides for some reason. I have four in total, now. They're all completely different consistencies, but neither react to wet on wet. Maybe, it's supposed to be like that? I know for sure that your ultraviolet RV is messed up, though. It blooms beautifully and it's not supposed to speckle when you get one that isn't defective. It's definitely not supposed to smell. Haha! Apparently, one of their shipments froze which caused all this mess. I've been wanting to order a couple of the paints from set b, but I think I'll wait a few months. Hopefully all the bad stock will clear out, by then.

I think the main and only difference between the two is that the hydros are lightfast. The concentrated watercolors are not lightfast. Concentrated watercolors were designed to be used for artworks that would be scanned into a computer. However combining both makes for AMAZING RESULTS. I literally only(90% of the tkme) use dr ph martins paints. There hasn’t been any other watercolors I can compare them too. Where’s something about the liquid base that makes the difference.

Don't alot ot paints fade if painting is not treated in some way. I think alot ot things fade if left in the sunlight. Clothing, painting, colored paper,..... so I think we can be safe to say if not treated correctly it will fade into oblivion at one time or another.

The hydrus will be “thicker” because they are pigment based rather than dye based

I know you are a woman and women love to talk a lot, but this video could (and in my opinion 'should') have been just 8 to 10 minutes long without losing any of the good info or becoming impersonal.

From the looks of your Painting you are very talented, however when referring to the paint's you place them in human form, I.e., constantly referring to them as these guys. Can't you instead say this brand, or that set? You said these guys about a dozen times in the first 5 min. Very unappealing, thank you.

I appreciate the comparison, but am thinking the video could have taken half the time. Also you may want to watch saying thee when the next word starts with a consonant. You only say thee (the) when the next word starts with a vowel ... and never say 'ay' for the article 'a' . Watch your spelling of radiant.
