Tested a number of rollers to see which play the nicest with Alexseal paint (8 different rollers in total). Surprisingly the 2 most "budget friendly" ended up working the best; one for small(er) areas and the other for large open areas like on hulls and decks :-)
Foam rollers behaved as I anticipated, but check it out and let me know your thoughts!
Best source I've found for the Silky roller is www.smsdistributors.com/produ...
For the RedTree mohair rollers seems like Amazon is the best bet

Many thanks, Andy! I am ready to move on to the Alexseal final coats and this video is gold for ordering the right rollers. I have always loved the RedTree brand and will continue using them for smaller areas like my decks.

the comparison used diffrent brands, different roller cover types (mohair and foam as best as I can tell), and didn't discuss nap size (were they all the same?) and seemed pretty focused on brand. Its not a bad review, but I also don't know if we really learned anything because those three variables (brand, type, and nap legnth) weren't isolated in the testing. If you want to know what brand is best, you need to test the same cover type and nap length across all brands. If you want to know what cover type is best, choose one brand and nap length and test various cover constructions. If you want to know what nap length is best, choose one brand and cover construciton and test various naps. From my experinece with painting various things, to get the smoothest finish you want a very short nap (say 1/4 or 3/8), you probably want microfiber cover (not mohair, synthetic, or foam). I'd be curious to see how all of those brands compare if you used 3/8 nap microfiber covers.

Hey Andy! Just too late for my hull painting project but it's always great seeing your videos and all the great information you give us. I have an Ericson 27 masthead sloop and we have been wanting to change her hull color from white with blue cove and boot stripes to red with black cove and boot stripes. Gray primer applied with the 1/8" nap foam rollers that was recommended on the can and by the time we were 3/4 of the way around the ends of the roller were starting to leave their mark. Luckily those pieces of foam came out of the primer without much trouble and the second coat worked much better. As for the topcoat of TB Wet Edge I used the same Wooster 7" 1/8" nap solvent safe foam roller cover and that worked amazingly well for the three coats I ended up using to coating her.

You nailed it Andy. I use the big 12 inch ones for the large areas and then jump into the foam ones to do the chines, in around rudders, threw hull fittings and any other tight spots. Mostly boats over 20 ft are ideal for the 12 inchers. With foam rollers alone I get about 2x12 ft nicely wet out and then grab a fresh foam roller to go over it to get a nice finish. Use the same roller I finished the first area to put material on the next area and then swap out roller again. The "fluffy" rollers are great for wetting out your glass but absolutely rule when gel coating uneven surfaces or hard to get in spots. Engine compartments rod lockers and storage compartments are my fave places for them. Watch out for the rollers with stripes ..the dye comes off so if you are using white you will see it. Peace.

I tried mohair rollers following your suggestion but couldn't get the loose hair out with my painters tape. So I changed back to foam. And yes, mine do swell up as well. I had another type which didn't swell but started falling apart without any warning leaving red foam pieces in a white hull. Still I'm working with foam. One just needs to change them after about half an hour if working with 2 part products. No problem with any 1K paint so far.

Hello, I really enjoy watching your videos. I do have question for you . I just bought a used boat and the gel-coat on the inside of the boat is pretty faded. Do you think painting it will stand up to the abuse of walking on it or should I wet sand and buff it out. I going to use the boat for fishing only?

My skill at what I do... People call me an expert. I always say we all are experts at what we do. Blessed with three remarkable children I had these watchwords for them... Meticulous attention to detail. Make haste slowly. Your head is not decoration... Thinking is not optional. You have to know something well. Once you do... it is not what you know but those you know. All of that applies to you in every possible way. I always look forward to your postings. Thank you very much for your consistently exceptional presentations.

@jeffmelton6875

I've had very limited success with the redtree rollers. I have trouble controlling the amount of material I'm rolling out with them and tend to get sags in my paint. My go to at this point is the Arroworthy 4" foam roller. I can put down a much thinner coat of paint with this type of roller and this particular roll does not react with the paint like every box store roller that I've tried does.

Is there a disadvantage to using a 4" cover like the Redtree if painting a larger area. I have a 17' 1960 Dorsett Catalina and am willing to put in the extra time with a smaller roller to avoid sags. But if there are other disadvantages...

Andy I need your help! Can I use thickened epoxy to bond Coosa board to polyester resin that is covered with gelcoat? Or do I have to sand the gelcoat off completely and bond directly to the bare polyester resing glass? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so I called West System customer service and was told that as long as the gelcoat is not compromised I could scuff it with 80 grit, clean the surface and bond right to the gelcoat with my thickened epoxy. Just FYI
