Following Friday's deadline for Nomination papers to be submitted, we hear from Justin Schlosberg of Collective about the prospects for anti-austerity, anti-genocide candidates in the forthcoming General Election.

Forget the unions they're 5 % of the population, 20% of the working population and most of them are middle class, in it for themselves and infiltrated by liberals and right-wingers. This is why Labour has lost there support over the last 10 years and yet leftists still fail to realise this. We don't need spent slogans , we need fundamental policies that the masses can support.

Agreed, but they need to choose their candidates more carefully. For instance, in Luton South the WPGB candidate, Dr. Yasin Reman, stood (in the same seat) for UKIP in 2015! I can't get behind that, so I've no choice but to hold my nose and vote Green.

It's so important to start organising now for the next election. There is a high probability that there will be a massive swing to the right if there is no other organised alternative to the politics offered by all the legacy parties. 5 years of persistence should make a difference

The left have conflated a campaign of tactical voting to punish Labour with a campaign to elect a socialist alternative. A left movement in this election should copy Vorderman's strategy to pursue tactical voting on steroids and systematically encourage a sympathetic solid slab of socialist voters to squeeze out the Labour candidate with a vote for the best placed alternative, probably a Liberal, Green, or on occasion a strong independent. The sole strategic point of 2024 should try to restrict Labour to a minority government. If acheived electoral reform follows and then the socialist movement can focus upon the creation of a coherent socialist strategy in 2029 with confidence of electoral success.

The solution to this problem, (i.e. political parties), is NOT another political party. Only independent candidates, who are not bound by party loyalties, can truly represent their constituents.

I think more than 1 or 2 will be elected. Although I think Feinstein could do with the most help in London so hopefully more people volunteer. I reckon Corbyn and Mohamad will win though

Not heard of the Collective before. Do they have a website? Who is involved? I think splitting the vote is less of a problem than mobilizing the hundreds of people required to get 15-20k people to vote for you. If more than one candidate can do that in the same constituency, I will be very surprised. When I've canvassed alot of people don't know who their MP is and most probably couldn't name the Labour and Conservative candidates for their constituency. They have other stuff to do with their lives. For Independents to get name recognition from tens of thousands of voters is a huge amount of work and organisation.

I would agree that an independent candidate who left on his own volition, may not be supported. However, when the person is ruthlessly kicked out against his wishes then he will highly likely be fully supported.

Also agree that this is mainly down to JC and the high profile labour left have chosen not to endorse. However, looks like this could be given fresh impetus in the near future with the culls of Starmer. Local Assemblies are key, as in timetoassemble. Root these new candidates/ paety in their community. I will check out collective. Where are the website details?

The difficulty is most people simply are labour or conservative and wonder why nothing changes. Let' say the u thinkable happens and both Labour and Tories are destroyed, then you would have a parliament full of independents, but how do you form a government of like-minded people.

There are at least a dozen parties to the left of labour some of them of considerable standing. The last thing we need is yet another one. Remember the Labour Party itself was formed from a number of different groups who came together... try something like that to displace Labour with a genuine party of the left. Or join one of the existing parties. Even the Greens are to the left of labour at the moment!
