Right to the points. Short and sweet. Thanks. I wish the Dr. that gave me steroid injections would have said something other than, "I'm going to give you some injections. You should start feeling better in three days." My gut instinct in the waiting room was that I was at a "shot mill", and as usual, my gut was right. So if you go to a doctor who doesn't do a darn thing but go right to the needle, without giving a thorough evaluation, run! If you can.

I’m having the ‘flare’ reaction and severe headache for the first time. Have never had a problem before with cortisone injections in the shoulder previously - always perfectly fine. Not this time …

I found out that hard way that one of the potential side effects doctors don't tell you about or even admit is leg cramping. I had a injection in my knee a month ago and ever since I've gotten multiple leg cramps at night - up to double digits. I've had leg cramps before, but never more than one per night and infrequently, usually when I'm dehydrated. I called the doctor's office to report the problem and to see what I could do about it and they wouldn't even talk to me. All they did was have the nurse lie and tell the receptionist that the cramps weren't related to the cortisone shot. The cramps started right after the shot and no other variable has changed. I asked the receptionist to have the nurse call me back and she never did.

There are a bunch of lesser known side effects. I had a patient get really bad hiccups once!

I got my first ever steroid shot in both knees yesterday and the doctor said I could go to work the next day ..wrong ! my knee has some swelling so I’ve been icing it I have a hard time even walking to the kitchen. What’s the proper aftercare of getting knee injections and when really can you go back to work?

I have had extreme facial swelling for 5 days now since my trigger point injection in my spine area (near neck). Is fluid retention like thsi permanent? Or could this be an allergic reaction? I have a very slim face and it went from 0-100 overnight

I’m 47 with osteoarthritis in both knees and hip, after my third gel shot In my knee is a lot more pain, stiffness and I can barely walk , stand at times, I get steroid shot in my hip, but I don’t know if I’ll continue this type of treatments because I don’t think it’s working but making it worst

The cortisone shots in my wrist do help. Unfortunately, I get the flare ups the Dr. was speaking of. It hurts 2 to 3 days like a son of a gun. 😬Ouch!

Have steroid shot in hip joint for torn labrum arthritic hip didn't feel pain for almost year recently I noticed the pain and stiffness is creeping back in thinking about getting another shot

There was no mention of headache, rapid heartbeat, or the extreme hot flushing I get in my face and chest, the day after injection. Not to mention extreme insomnia and irritablity. Are these normal, or possibly allergic reactions? Thanks, hope to see answers to mine and others' questions.

Dr. I had a cortisone shot in my knee approx. 11 hours ago. I always check my BP and heart rate nightly. Well tonite my heart rate was much higher than ever! My HR is usually between 65-74 all my life, I am a 68 year old male. My HR was 90 tonite!! BP slightly elevated. I am also on BP meds which keep my BP always down everyday. Just concerned about the HR at this point. I took 1 MG of Clonazepam from my doctor for years for panic attacks, but not that tonight. I will call my Dr later today. Any help will help, ideas about this? Thank You!!

Hey doc.. it's been 4 days or so since I got two steroid shots L4 and L5 (right side). Tonight I noticed that when I tippy toe on my right toes my legs seems to shake very uncontrollably almost like my leg itself is having a seizure. Any idea what's going on?

So I had a hip shot done 4 weeks ago. I had a anaphylaxis reaction. Part of my reaction was my voice box and tongue became swollen and my voice was extremely hoarse. I went to my Allergist and she tested me against Betamethasone, Bupivicaine( Marcaine) and Lidocaine. 100% allergic to them! Even when testing a small drop under my skin, I started to feel my throat swell so I would advice your husband to get tested before doing another cortisone shot.

Since getting the shot in my ankle I’ve experienced increase hunger, acid reflex, trouble sleeping, depression, anxiety, fatigue, burning tongue syndrome and so much more. My pain in my ankle is slowly coming back after only a week, but my doctor said it would last me forever. Are these symptoms normal and is the shot just to cover pain? Or is it supposed to last?

My clinic says because they use a CT-scan so the injection can go right into the shoulder capsule the shot will relieve pain of torn rotator cuff without risk of damage or degeneration of muscles or tendons.

You can do it with CT scan, just exposes you to a ton of radiation, compared to ultrasound which is no radiation

Sometimes when pain is caused with a shot it raises the heart rate, shouldn't last that long in most cases

I think there is more to it than just the pain of the shot, causing your rapid heartbeat. It's worth doing more research; I think the doctor's reply is incomplete.

I had headaches, dimple, lightening of skin, increased heart rate, nausea, irratiablity, inablity to sleep, and shortness of breathe. Not to be rude but several people in the comments have shared simialr side effects yet there are no mentions of this. Its quite concerning and for medication like prednisone, the pill form of corticosteroid. What I have shared are common side effects and symptoms. This may mean that isnt the mode of administraiton (pill or shot) but rather the use of corticosteroids in general and the possible side effects.

Systemic steroids (pills that you take everyday) have many many more side effects than a one time low dose steroid injection that targets a specific area

@ELIZABETH KRYSTAL The dimples are most likely permeant, and mine have not gone away. It's been a month since I received the injections into my scalp. I'm also experiencing pain still and occasionally swelling at the injection site.

@Beyond the Scalpel with Dr. Paull I understand completely however, you have real-life data outside of clinical trials indicating adverse effects from the injections. This phenomenon has been seen before with many different medications (pill and injection form). This is why many are pulled later on once they have had time to circulate amongst the population, and enough people have reported adverse side effects. The lightening and dimpling side effects were never mentioned to me before receiving the treatment. This is a known adverse effect for darken skinned people. The other side effects I have experienced were also never mentioned as possibilities, and I did not have the ability to make an informed decision about the potential risks. The doctor shouldn't be the one who weighs the risks because I will be the one living with the effects. Personally and ethically, I do not see the value in weighing the likelihood of side effects from pill or injection corticosteroid in the presence of concerned patients expressing their experiences and potential harm from the medication.

That is what is referred to as a vasovagal effect, meaning that it what you feel like before you pass out

No, not normally. You need to be on oral steroids for a long time before you get weight gain

Not usually. The injection itself can raise your heartrate if you are anticipating the pain

Weight gain is usually a side effect of long term oral steroids. A one time steroid injection to a localized area usually doesn't cause any appreciable weight gain

Long-term affects are nnot mentioned...and seem to be SIGNIFICANT! Reports are that cortisone actually ACCELERATES joint deterioration. Why is that not mentioned in your warnings?

Because it is not conclusively proved in the literature. The literature seems to say that very high doses of cortisone can do that, while low doses can be protective of the joint. Double the dosage of what I normally use had no effect on the cartilage in a double blinded randomized study. Also, many cortisone injections don't go into the joint, depending on what the issues are.
