I mean, reading this very, *very* charitably, which is 500km from what it deserves and 500km more, it could mean that he noticed the duality of wave-particle in the subatomic level and intuitively derived *everything* of Quantum Physics out of that. And him "learning" College math could just be "oh this is the description of X" Again, *very* charitable reading of him as a non-physician software engineer, but an interesting alternate history idea IMO. What *if* we found the waveness of particles first, instead of it's pointness? What if an alien civilization did?
@jessehunter362
@jessehunter362 Жыл бұрын
@@sponge1234ify the real problem with this is that the math is what quantum physics is. It’s like gravity- everyone knew that it existed before, things obviously fell down, but because newton mathematically described it he gets to “invent” it. I have a very basic intuition of quantum mechanics, the basic rules without the maths, but anyone can get that really easily- it’s the understanding the math and the actual nitty-gritty of it that matters.

My big beef with the idea of Self-help is the underlining assumption that people's problems aren't outside of their control. An example base on anecdotal experience: I was extreamly depressed for most of my life, starting when I was around 7 unto my late 20s. I am Autistic, and the first time I became self-aware enough to understand what that entailed was when my older brother would constantly mock me for being disabled. That along with the constant physical abuse, he always made me feel really helpless and alone. Ironically he and my mom later found out that he was also Autistic when he entered his 20s. My parents were very overbearing people who had unrealistic expectations that were never stated, so navigating life in the same space as them was always like walking on eggshells. Least to say my family was constantly punching down at me, like my disability was something I could just "overcome" and that I simply "wasn't trying hard enough". Between that, an education system that could not sufficiantly support me, and no social circles to help let off some steam, life was really stressful. To the point where I started developing a large grey patch of hair on the back of my head. Theres more to that, like how my step dad made life almost inhospitable after he converted to being a jehovah's witness, but I'll leave that out to prevent over-complicating this comment. Now nearing the present, I met a woman at University who is now my wife. She is one of the most empathetic and intelligent people I have ever met, the only person who really "gets me". She is the only person I have ever felt confortable around. We moved in together shortly after meeting, and around 6 months after she points out that the grey patch on the back of my head disappeared, as soon as she mentioned that it all clicked. My lack of self-confidence, the depression, the stress, it was all caused by the enviornment I was raised in. I was living through it for so long that I didn't have the tools to identify the core problem, it was my family. All of this wasn't a problem I could of just rationalized away like the Self-Help industry advertises by thinking self-affirming thoughts, it was an issue directly related to my enviornment, and the relationships I had. As soon as I distanced myself from them, I became far happier.

This really points out how a lot of what people need is *the appropriate supports* to better their lives. So many people in difficult situations are there because of the circumstances they grew up in, and the only way to lift people out of those is to offer supports that help people out of those situations so they can begin healing. We have so many social problems that are ruining people's lives yet our society tends to act as though failure is the fault of the individual, despite it being blatantly obvious that we are not in a meritocracy.

I also think a lot of the issue with self-help as books is that they have a hard time with context (which i mean, makes sense, a book writer can't write for every kind of situation ever). I don't necessarily disagree with what a lot of those books say but because they are so non-specific I have a hard time trusting them. The things they say COULD be useful but I was also in a situation where making huge life choices mattered a lot than trying to meditate, or think optimistically. I'm already a somewhat optimistic person but i also struggle with depression- which feels like a contradiction but if people or situations in your life suck real bad it drags you down a lot. And obviously I think people should do what works for them. Stuff that does and doesn't work for me isn't going to be the same as everyone else. But I also think self-help as a media and industry does pray on the idea a bit, that if you just read one more book you would just be a bit happier, or would just be a bit of a better person- which I think people with mental health issues can almost treat like an addiction. I forgot the title of the video but there's another video on KZfaq explaining that a common problem people have with self-help media is that its really easy to read a book or watch a video, so some people fall into this loop where the media makes them feel fantastic, but life changes are hard- especially with a lack of support, so it feels like they are stuck. Its at least something to be aware of. I don't think every self-help book is pure evil but there's a chance that some know that people NOT getting better means they stick around buying more books. I'll also point out that just because advice sounds nice doesn't mean that its what you need to hear. This is super tricky because people like to point out what works for them, and the idea is that you try it and if it doesn't work you can move on. But when books make themselves seem like they know a lot more than you do (intentionally or unintentionally), it starts to feel less like some advice from some stranger and more like advice that really "should" be working, and if it doesn't work YOU did something wrong. I wouldn't say this is ALWAYS the book writers fault but its something that can happen if you sell yourself as someone that knows a lot about something. intentionally or not, you make your words matter a lot more, for better or worse. im still in contact with my family but i would 100% say that moving away did a lot more than anything else really did. But the idea of doing that wasn't really something i read from many online places, usually it was boiled down to "be positive" which is fine on paper, but i can only focus on my mental health so much when something around it is hurting it. Its like digging a hole while someone shovels dirt back in. You still have a hole, but you're also not getting anywhere. Do what works for you but also be careful.
@mordcore

There are a lot of people trained in mental health that do not have MDs or even PhDs. Social workers, family and marriage therapists, and professional counselors are just a few of the many licensed professionals out there who can provide therapy sans medication if the client so pleases. I think the idea behind "anyone could fall for this" means actually that anyone could fall for a scam, but the scam you could fall for varies from person to person. While trying to make sense of the situation, some guy who identified himself as police, took the phone from her and started asking me questions, and then... They got her name wrong... I said "who? This is a wrong number," hung up and called my daughter. She was fine at home... As relieved as I was, that f**ked me up really bad for the rest of that day. The part about how the use of the Vanguard title and the silly sashes are actually a strategy to drive out the sensible people is the same strategy used by e-mail scammers. You've probably gotten an e-mail from a Nigerian prince saying you're his long-lost heir and will receive a $50 million inheritance and thought "why do they make these stories so hard to believe? They would get more people if they made the story a little more credible". But it's unbelieveable like that on purpose: they want to filter out anyone who would waste their time in long conversation chains and ultimately not wire them any money. They want to fish in only the extremely gullible and foolish ones, because those are the least likely to waste their time.

I promise though that no matter how many workshops or seminars you attend, how many books you read, how many podcasts you listen to, or how many videos you watch there is no one size fits all answer, there's no magical inherent truth to the universe, and most of the "self help" industry shares similar thought processes to Scientology, MLM's, and conspiracy theory nuts, that is to say, absolutely riddled with cognitive distortions, cognitive bias, cognitive dissonance, and logical fallacies.

My dad was really wrapped up in Landmark. He got to the point where he couldn't hold a conversation anymore without trying to "recruit". When I was around 12 years old I attended a meeting once with him. They blocked the doors with the registration table, not allowing us to leave or even go to the bath room without talking to atleast three people. I was eventually pressured into doing the "Childrens Forum" which was, just, terrible... They withheld food and water for hours until someone had a "break through", which was usually a kid, sitting up on stage while being berated by the lecturer until they broke down into tears. I remember smelling the buffet at the other side of the room just hoping for tears. Thank you so much for this video. It really put a lot in perspective for me.

sorry you had that experience! I guess mine was somewhat similar, but I don’t look back on it bitterly. I remember crying telling my mom I was so bored and didn’t want to stay. I couldn’t stay awake, so at one point the lecturer had me talk to people in the back about if I wanted to be there. I said I did because I didn’t want to cause a scene. But still… I think I gained from it. The whole bit they do about “if everyone was shy, nothing would get done” impacted me. Also, the “if you have something to say, say it or write a letter” thing has really helped me in my life. I don’t remember their specific lingo for that stuff, but idk I did “get something” out of it. No showy “breakthroughs”, but something. One of the most pernicious things about self-help is something which looks benign, or even positive, which is the black-and-white thinking. In most cases the message is "You're a loser now, you just need to do X, then you'll be a winner". It's a message which sells X very effectively, but is extremely counter-productive in practice; at the first setback you'll consider yourself a "loser" again, and start hunting for some other magic fix. But you're not a loser; look at things you're already doing well and can build on. And there is no magic wand to improve any particular area of your life, it usually takes sustained effort, adaptability and pushing through setbacks.

There is such a wide gap between your values and my own that I have a very difficult time accepting that you don't just desire to cheat without risk of unpleasant consequences. Some people use the words interchangeably to subtly communicate that they believe that the concept of polyamory is an infidelitous manipulation. The only reason that Keith isnt polyamorous is because he didnt announce his intention to cheat before doing so.

@@SeekerGoldstone Perhaps you're using too rigid a definition of cheating? The word itself implies some dishonesty or intent to violate the rules of some arrangement. Oh my God. I saw "What the Bleep do we know" There was a scene where indigenous people off the west indies "couldn't see" Columbus' ships that were approaching because they never saw ships like that before. But one smart guy could see the ripples the ships made, and by looking at the ripples he could then see the ships. And once he saw the ships, he could point out the ships to the other people. It was kindergarten logic. Later in the film some woman became engulfed by some great spirt of knowledge and started talking in a fake voice. It's insane.

I was in a cult growing up. It's been excessively difficult to move on from it. The core manipulation tactic they used was everyone's basic understanding of exorcism. Typically that's a priest helping a victim overcome their demons. In our case they used 3 parties. The priest, the victim, and a third person who hosted the problem demon/spirit/entity. This made the victim feel more involved since they could confront the problem and, as you might can imagine, led to abuses. Later on, using the idea of hosting, one of the leaders played Host to the spirit of God and had sex with most of the females. He was married and most of them weren't single. But no one cared, it was God after all. Kids as young as 2 were taught to use firearms, drank beer, and did drugs. I was caught running away from home and the leaders of the group had me stand against a wall and took turns throwing rocks at me to symbolize an old testament stoning. I was 15. They warned me it would be worse if I continued to be rebellious. They engaged in animal sacrifice, and when the kids who raised the animals cried they were told it made the sacrifice more meaningful to God. Cults suck.

To elaborate “Dominus Obsequious Sororium” is very poorly-written Latin, roughly meaning “Master (Masculine word, Literally meaning “Lord”) of Compliant Sisters” with obsequious (compliant) using the English spelling, not the actual Latin word “obsequiosus” from which it derives and declined to describe the LORD/Master as compliant, not the sisters. It's been a idea that's been gaining traction, especially on the political left. Because there are racists that misuse and misrepresent the science of IQ, they conclude that any use of IQ testing is worthless. In the context of KB's statement, the guy was using his IQ score as a dick measuring contest. Also a misuse of IQ testing. Thing is, any psychometrician will tell you that IQ is an extremely limited measure. However, it's the best or only applicable tool to test certain hypotheses. If IQ testing's limitations are properly accounted for, it not "bullshit". It's bullshit when lay people try to use it. Dunning-kruger in action.

It appears to be substantive and profound, but anything more than fleeting consideration exposes just how useless it really is. "If you believe and work hard enough, could you become successful? Well, yes. Otherwise, you didn't believe and work hard enough." It's a tautology. The answer is written into the question, and it's completely useless. The questions that are actually useful and relevant are "What does it take to be successful and do I have that requisite level of capability, competence, work ethic, knowledge, experience, resources, and opportunity to succeed?"

My father came back from WW II with a Purple Heart, five major battle stars and a major case of PTSD as he had been the last man standing in his unit, but kept on fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. PTSD, a.k.a shellshock, wasn't well understood and was not effectively treated. They convinced him to join AA, which has a dismal record. The problem with AA was their Protestant preaching, and my father and his buddies who joined were all Catholic. So they shrugged off the alien Protestant preachments and went out drinking after the AA meeting. On the positive side, he was trying to self-medicate with alcohol, but never once got violent with me or my mother. I am literally the target demographic for MLMs and cults. I’m disenfranchised from society and my family, I have mental illness, I have incurable physical disabilities, I’m open to “new age” ideas. But I didn’t get involved. The idea of “anyone can join a cult” is just a way to take the blame of the many perpetrators within cults and makes the leader seem like a totally normal occurrence. People in cults do bad things. But they didn’t if it wasn’t their fault for joining up! People in cults made active decisions to violate the boundaries and feelings of those around them. But they didn’t if it wasn’t their fault for joining up! These cult leaders are not/we’re not normal. They’re over the top, weird, pushy, egotistical.
