@Proko I think it depends on the convention. LightBox Expo was an amazing success for me talking to people, but other anime conventions and comic cons I often have to sift through creeps (I am a early 20s female) and people wanting to take advantage of my art skills (commissioning something then demanding lower prices or ghosting me after I have begun the project). I think if you’re a young girl especially you have to be discriminating as to which conventions you go to and who is a serious possible client. Trust your gut, if someone seems too nice or too interested, and you get a creepy feeling get out. I had someone promise to print my art on shirts and sell them, but he got angry over email when I inquired more about payment structure. He said I needed to draw his piece, then he would see how it looked printed on a shirt and if he liked it we would do business. I was naive then and spent hours on a digital piece that I sent to him, then he completely ghosted me and I got nothing for my work. I haven’t seen it turn up anywhere yet, but be careful. That being said, I have also gotten plenty of legitimate business from cons so it’s not all bad. Don’t be afraid to say no! Sadly, some people are there preying on naive new artists. Good luck!

This wasn't at a convention. OMG I did this to Marshall at Costco Laguna Niguel about forgetting a name Hahaha. Instead of calling out his name because I forgot, I said "Hey... You work with Proko right?" Oh man I felt so embarrassed.

I'd rather have a fan question lightning round than a crazy question. You probably have quite a few to burn through and that way we can get more nuanced answers. The last 5 minutes felt like a completely different podcast.

I attended a masterclass by Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi a few years ago. They spent a good hour and a half detailing their respective influences and artists they admire. When the Q&A period came about, the first question was "who are your influences?"

There's a difference between drawing from imagination and drawing from visual memory. First comes to mix memories and concepts and second one goes to recalling an image that you saved in your memory.

Stan n Marshall you guys have become the biggest influencers of my life. You guys are life savers. I love the way you put your thoughts in words. I remember the time when I graduated from art school with a degree in textile design n just after three months I realized that this is not at all what I wanted to do in life. From my childhood i just wanted to draw well. So when i finally took the hard step of quitting everything n start learning painting life went worst than bad. I remember how I knocked every do of every painter in the city to beg them teach me how they paint but none of them actually did other than I was just another visitor for them to chat for hours. Boy you guys taught me everything I wanted to know and every week I wait n learn from you guys. I pity those who don't understand English in my country and cant learn from you guys. Great job Stay blessed

Marshall’s patience is rare gift. The guy in the voicemail mail should know the things he’s asking considering his age and when he was talking I was annoyed but Marshall manages to give a good answer and promote his site and other things while he was at it. That’s why many of us were waiting for a podcast with him in it.

For some reason, this was one of my most enjoyable podcasts so far but I've never been to a convention except as a makeup artist at a hair and beauty convention but it was amazing the similarities which I feel boils down to observation and socialization.

I wanna say that I really enjoyed the brief conversation on imagination drawing because for myself I'm learning to be more patient in creating something that is new. I too had the thought process of "I need to just get this thing is the FIRST GO and be done with it, and it will be great, because I know how to draw" And it never works like that. I took the mindset of "I need speed, I need to be able to just draw and paint fast and accurate so I can get to the next thing, just keep making things, some day I'll get that recognition." That way of thinking only make me draw sloppy or give up on ideas because I deemed them too difficult to pursue. Inktober has that effect of "Just get it done, doesn't have to look fantastic." Because you are trying to build a habit of daily drawing, which is fantastic. In November I'm taking that daily drawing that I have learned that I love and put it toward a slow burn in a piece. I have a vision for this piece and I have drawn it over and over this one month, working out thumbnails, working out the values. doing color comps, SLOWING DOWN AND THINKING IT THROUGH. And I realized "Damn I can draw from my imagination" because it is just building on the piece AS YOU ARE WORKING ON IT. I literally 2 days ago found reference for this piece that I was SO SURE I was "Done" with, I was ready to go into the final painting of it but these new bits of info made me say "Wait, that would really work in what I'm making". And now my piece has taken a BETTER direction than my initial "romanticized" vision of the first pass. I now want to take my time with every painting I do, explore it's true potential, as oppose to just "Posting for the Gram" to keep up with the art Jones for no reason. My new mindset is "I'll post it when it's done, and no sooner". Thank you guys for the great content =).

I was not amused attending the San Diego Comicon. It was fun in some areas doing things but the crowd was a pain.. you’re always on lineups, the washrooms are always full, there’s no where to sit and rest, you walk at a snail’s pace. It was more annoying than anything.

I go to a draftsman school as an artist in my late twenties/early thirties, and all the young folk won’t stop talking about Kim Jung Gi as an aspirent or Sargent as -The- artist to study from. It drives me crazy, it’s like the re emerging Frazetta craze two years ago!

Rhyming every thing you say cannot be the easy way, especially if your mother tongue is Finnish, and it takes so long to even think it, let alone to compose a coherent sentence. Therefore, you might compense by yelling it out loud.

Speaking of badges, the only time a comic book artist friend convinced me to go to a convention to show my portfolio, at Lucca Comics and Games (a pretty important fair in Europe), I solved the problem by fixing it in the right position with a pin. :p I had done the same with the ticket, which had to be shown at the entrance of each pavilion.

I'd just sit down at your booth and ask if you'd draw me something if I drew you something :P I had some fun with that at an anime con. If I may contribute to the imagination thing, I draw almost exclusively from imagination, and it's a sloppy mix of gesture and construction. After drawing from my head for years, I took formal art training and drew from life - so I draw better from imagination now. But it's usually not something I sit down with the same expectations of realism that I have for a study, even I kinda can. I take much more inspiration from comics and cartoons for how I draw that.

Wonder-Con has a similar concentration of fans to artists as Comic Con--and the cosplayers really dominate. I cosplay, too, but I'm more invested in creating than consuming media. Artist alley and chatting with artists is my favorite part of the convention, followed by panels. I'd love to talk with fellow hobbyist artists but they are hard to find there!

I was actually considering calling in for the voicemails to ask about Aphantasia. I have Aphantasia and an artist as well, which in itself is pretty contradicting. However, I still can manage how to draw without references (even though it's extremely tough for me) because I have to learn the information not really in a subjective manner but more objective. I have to know anatomy, postures, and all as if it was a formula, since I obviously can't draw from imagination. I can't just simply imagine a pose to copy from it, so thinking of it as more of an objective way is kind of required to do artwork. I struggle terribly with perspectives. I can't really visualize how it could look like and i'm pretty much always required to use a model app to figure out on how things should be. I'm not too sure if you'll even see this but I didn't expect to see any kind of mention of aphantasia in a art podcast about conventions! Caught me off guard. x) I guess a question of mine about aphantasia is what are some possible ways to help with needing to draw from "imagination" without really needing to use references, or even how to make the process of trying to draw less of a hassle? Imagination is extremely important for this field and not having that just makes things pretty difficult. x)

I feel like drawing from imagination is vague. It could mean drawing something without a reference or it could mean drawing something for which there is no reference because it lives only in the artist brain. The second is closer to abstract art. The solution to the first would be to study a bunch of reverences, abstract, and simplify to its basic essence until it lives in your brain and reconstruct it from there.

I went out of my way to collect resources that teach you fundamentals of imagination: www.reddit.com/r/learnart/comments/dapk62/from_the_guy_who_made_the_most_comprehensive_list/ I stressed out over how to get to the level of drawing from the imagination, too. So it focuses on the fundamentals of draftsmanship and perspective. It's absolute fundamental, to learn perspective in order to draw from imagination. Vandruff says as much, in the podcast. It features both paid and free curriculum suggestions like Proko and Vandruff's instruciton, books, and others that are great. If other people find this useful, hope you have a great art journey ahead! It's working well for me so far.

When I say drawing from imagination I mean without reference. Using construction is fine. I never thought anyone meant any different. Drawing without construction lines just means you draw the construction lines in your head instead of on paper anyways yeah?

I went to a convention in the UK called the boat show, and my biggest disaster was going there, because I only like looking at the big motor yachts, and my dad flipping looooooves sailing boats. Bored out of my skull, if I ever go again, I'll just draw people

I would get really nervous around professionals/artistic celebrities and feel that to ask advice or just talk with them that there would be an expectation to purchase something from them. That could turn into a very expensive day! What are people's thoughts and opinions on this?

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is useful for training yourself in contour drawings and improving your general ability to see angles/relationships/proportions. The presudo-science is absolute bullshit, but the exercises are useful. There's a Level 1-100 in drawing, but no one talks about "level zero." That is, being unable to drawing things that already exist in space. Just looking at something and recreating it. None of the amateur KZfaq art tutorials talk about this, because they assume you already have some basic art fundamentals (even if you don't). Surely you'll absorb these basics of construction, since you've already mastered proportions, negative space, shadows and lighting and perspective... right? But if you're an absolute beginner, you won't know that. If you jump right to drawing from imagination and don't spend any time getting past Level 0, you're going to have a bad time and waste an enormous amount of time and be horribly frustrated. I highly recommend the book to the absolute beginner for its exercises, alone.

if you insist replacing whats yo thang with crazy christian questions, at the least the questions should be art related. whatss yo thang can be a very insightful and interesting segment, so whatever replaces it if anything should match that in my opinion.
