goblins of the labyrinth by brian fraud, as for character design. or any dinosaur book by Zdenek Burian, like perhistoric animals, or life before man. or perhistoric man. which are out of print, but i own them :p . they are tremendous. the best dinosaur plates ever created. havent seen better, including the guy who drew dinotopia.

ON BUILDING COMMUNITY (By a seasoned community builder/leader and lifelong learner): 1. Start where you are. Start with who you know. Start with who is ready. Start with what you know. Look at your current friend base and see if there are 1 or 2 people that would benefit from a similar type of support. 2. Think Give before you get. If you don't have friends that share a similar need - and eventually when you're ready to expand - you'll want to POSITION yourself to make ORGANIC connections. Start by looking for opportunities to BE OF SERVICE in/near/around other artists. 3. Start small. Stay small. 6-8 people max. There's a lot of moving parts in communities and it's our natural inclination to try to BUILD in proportion to our level of need - we're social creatures and we're drowning in Candy Crush Connection. 4. If community is a high value to you, and it very well might be, I would invite you to consider how you will play an ACTIVE role in the development of the community. It's worth learning about and doing your own research. If you don't know, it's worth finding someone to ask who might. 5. New is always scary. Scary is uncomfortable. Uncomfortable means that your social and emotional agility is improving. Growing our muscles is uncomfortable! 6. Know yourself. Know what you need, what you're missing - and look for people that share similar struggles/need (SUPPORT GROUP) or someone that brings those things to the table (TEAMWORK). 7. FINALLY: Have fun. Don't take things too seriously (and learn how to tame your perfectionism if you do). Take your time, use it as a practice in patience (IT CAN TAKE YEARS) and consistency. You can't hurry love. Community is a group kind of love that especially cannot be rushed. :)

I'm paying the basic pack in Bauman's patreon, and I can say with confidence that is one of the best investments I have done this whole year! Stephen is a very good teacher, he takes the times to explain in-depth and also gives really valuable insights. But Stan is right, his critiques are just full, you have to pay attention when there are available spots cuz they run fast

The best part in my opinion is in the following extract from this video (time code around 48:17). [...] - Isn't that exciting? - Yeah! - I mean it's thrilling! It makes you feel like there is a way to get better and better and better. And in the end you just come up to a level that's beyound what you imagined. - Slowly just fine-tuning every little element to the point where you don't even understand what's happening. Your brain is just making decisions that you don't understand... I mean you film that... and you analyze that... and then you make that into something you understand... and you keep practicing until your brain gets even better. - Yes. - Yeah. - This is about human potential. - Yes, it is exactly. - And what makes it so exciting is: "I can be way better than I thought I could be". [...] Hopefully there are some people from real life who actually think that way. I do believe we human beings are granted with outstanding skills and should spend our time tweaking those skills so we might become the best version of ourselves. If we can put in enough time and real interest we might outclass our limits which are only virtual. So yes I strongly agree we can perform way better than we actually think we can. But sadly people like me just endup rejected because we bore most people around us... As for the art of learning, I'm not knwon to have achieved anything special in our world yet, but I'm confident people would learn quickly and perform better if they could focus more on what they are genuinely interested in. I mean don't go to school to get a diploma for a future job or because you've been told to do so, instead go to school to learn. Don't get into drawing because drawing is tendency or looks cool; instead start learning to draw because you are being guided by inner voices... Anyways thank you for these videos which are globally very interesting. I even learn some new english words through them.

Thank you so much for recommending The Art Of Learning. It's been a really fun and insightful read, written by a man who not only has the skills but also knows how to formulate those skills in a easily disgestable way. I'm on chapter 17 so I'm not finished yet, but after hearing that you might do a episode on the whole book I might have to finish it before that episode comes out!

I've been reading the Art of Learning this last week during my trip in Iceland. I've never read a book so comprehensive, assertive, and realizing on the topic of learning than this. This book has boosted my confidence and I've been noticing a lot of improvement in my learning processes (especially in art). You guys should really do episode analyses on books like this and other books. It would be a great source of content

You mentioned "The talent code". In the same author's "The little book of talent", in the more extensive but very well researched "Talent is overrated" (by Geoff Colvin), and in other books about high performance, there are great tips on the direction one should follow to improve skills. One common subject is working hard and consistently on the basics, the traits that are the essence of every good performance, from novice to world class. But what the basics are is not obvious at all from a beginner's perspective. A musician focuses on rhythm, harmony, muscle memory, improvisation, etc. An athlete focuses on strength, stamina, anaerobic resistance, technical drills, etc. What are, in your opinion, the basic skills that an artist should always have in mind when designing the main deliberate practice exercises? How would one measure the performance in each of them?

I think marshall was more thinking of a "community" as a a team that were all working on the same project, while stan and the caller were thinking more about community in the sense of getting together and working on their own individual art together, and it felt like there was a disconnect between the two. Great points and amazing advice in either way, love the podcast

My father brought my attention to you guys because he himself is getting into art, and he loves your work! I myself am a self-taught artist for well over 10 years (as well the reason why my dad has been getting into art recently), and your video here was a strong reassurance that I've been doing something right despite going down this road without a solid mentor. I've been wanting a mentor lately, now that I've started an art tutoring business, so your advice was a breath of fresh air! I'll be sure to take example from it and credit you guys for the strategy! Thank you guys so much, and I'll be sticking around to hear more of your wisdom! You're hilarious and a joy to watch as well listen to! Lastly, I'd love to hear you guys talk about "The Art of Learning" book! What you shared really resonated with me, and I'd love to see more of your in-depth views on it!

I really loved this episode! I recently started an artist collective for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY (@artistsofthemet). Like Stan said it was just me and one person doing this but we are in art school so from word to mouth it's really picking up! Firstly, I love the show. Thank you for sharing your conversations; they balance insight with levity quite beautifully. The idea of an episode that focuses on "The Art of Learning" is interesting. Perhaps you could link it to other books about and (meta) learning? A good possibility that I have read and is closely connected to Waizken's book is Scott Young's recently published "Ultralearning", which also mentions his short ultralearning project where he taught himself to draw a realistic portrait of himself in one month. This probably pails into insignificance compared to successfully completeing the 4 year MIT computer programming degree course in 12 months. The thing is, both books deal with very generalisable strategies, are quite inspiring and connect beautifully to drawing. It would be interesing to hear how you would suggest people take a deep, but non-traditional, dive into theprocess of mastering drawing.

These are just getting better and better! I've read most of these books and they are amazing! Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is dense but very useful too. There also was a course on Coursera Learning how to learn which is also great. Thanks guys for the podcast and I'm looking forward to the next one :)

Sorry for replying 2 months late, I hope this is still seen. My experience with building a community worked out well. I set a goal that I would have a life drawing open studio in my town within 12 months. The hardest hurtle was fining a location. It wasn't easy but I finally found something. Eventually, I got it going, over the next couple of years attendance was up and down but it sustained itself. Offered a great place for people to meet while growing their anatomy skills. Then I moved out of town, but a regular attendee took it over and now 7 years later I am told it is still going great.

I have read most of the books you talk about, my favorites are the art of learning and mastery of Robert Green, I will see the performance psychology that Marshall talk, I recommend to David Goggins. You can't hurt me: dominate your mind and challenge the odds, very inspiring, teach that despite your problems, you can achieve great things if you work hard

Caroline Dweck was the psychologist who is known for her work on the mindset psychological trait. I think she coined those terms of fixed and growth mindset. :)

You mentioned The art of learning a few episodes ago and i picked it up, I devoured it. I am not much of a reader and I finished it in 3 days I think the most important thing, and relevant thing, to our art practices, came from his journey into tai chi and also his very start of practicing chess. Fundamentals, in which he framed two ways. With chess he talked about how his instructor made him learn to play with just a king and a pawn and then expanding from there. This allowed him to understand how pieces moved without any other distractions on the board. With tai chi he talks at length about how he took this idea from his chess days. Focusing most of his energy on really basic fundamental techniques which allowed him to become world class in such a short amount of time. If a skill is fundamental it will be the foundation for the rest of the things he will learn in that discipline. Side note, he doesnt talk about the importance of mentors directly but he does talk around it quite a bit. His number to forget numbers concept is really eye opening too.

I would REALLY like Draftsmen to watch some of the things that video games have to offer regarding art and expression. It sounds really, really counter-intuitive, but there are still some people that says that videogames are not art. And it would be great to Stan and Marshall to share some of their knowledge about certain artists that have influenced millions of other artists. Certain games notorious for their visual appeal (such as Capcom's Okami, MOON Studios' Ori and The Blind Forest, Supergiant games Bastion, Transistor and Pyre and many other titles where visual style are pillars of the experience).

31:19 Between audio books on tape, and in mp3 format, there were also audio books on audio CDs for a while, especially motivational stuff (often transfered over from tape) like Tony Robbins, Bryan Tracy, Stephen Covey, etc.

I think it is a great idea to dedicate a podcast to discuss a book/ books within a theme. for example an episode discussing "learning how to do draw books" like the natural way to draw and drawing on the right side of the brain, etc. you mentioned the prospect of doing so in a previous episode.

Would love to watch an episode about whats the difference between the Entertainment art and other type of arts like galleries and stuff. Also about the evolution of art, from classic to modern, to what is now art. What contemporary art contributed to art today and what classic art contributed to art today. The topic also of: The freedom of what is art and what does it mean, like who decides what is art. or what is good or bad art? I typically tend to be drawn more to entertainment arts and not gallery arts, because I feel like art outside of entertainment is such a general word/topic that confuses me and I like when there are limits and rules that you can learn and break but still be in that arena of understanding around the industry globally. Were as outside of the entertainment arts it seems a bit vague to me. I feel like art in general is too broad maybe? IDK. The question of "is anything can be art?" The question of "why certain rules apply in the entertainment arts, and why not a single rule apply to art or at least that's what I feel? I know Stan does not do entertainment art. But the whole idea of the "Fundamentals" is idea I think more from the old masters, and not modern or contemporary art, is it? idk it seems confusing, that's why I would like you guys to discuss it. It might be a lot of topics/questions, but I think they are pretty much connected. I think it's a topic worth talking about. Also another idea for the podcast I would love to see sometimes a special guest brought to the podcast form time to time, to discuss with you two as well.

I recently read "The Art of Learning". I would love an episode discussing the book, however, I would especially like to hear what you guys think about how the principles in the book can be applied to learning art. I had to really think about how can I apply this to my journey to learning to draw and paint as I was going through the book.

On the concept of "slowing down time". I've heard it referred to that you have practiced a discipline enough that you are processing entire "chunks" of information quicker that are related. "Chunking" the information becomes almost a passive process but your brain is still processing those factors. Maybe it moves to a different part of the brain/neorological processes after a certain amount of time has been spent doing the activity? Maybe offloading to a more automated section of the brain in order to free up the more cognitive actions the brain can do. Just a thought.

Wtffff I wish I knew Marshall taught at Fullerton College when I was there. I feel like I've taken a class with everyone. I had Metzger for painting, Henke for ceramics, the color theory guy upstairs and uh...the drawing instructor Alvarez with "Mr. Slimy" or whatever. After watching all of these, I wish I could have had the foresight to take a class with you when I lived there!

The movies came before and were the basis for the TV series that Proko mentioned. Robert Downey jr. And Ewen McGregor and Rachel McAdams. The second movie was The Game of Shadows with Moriarty.

I would very much be interested in watching Draftsmans review of the art of learning. Marshall's animated character head is a cross between the two Christmas specials from the 70s. The magician from frosty the snowman and the mayor from twas the night before christmas. And stan's is the hamburglar, from McDonalds, unmasked.

I'd like an episode about developing skills needed for being a good art teacher or presenter. How do you think about breaking apart content to fill segments for 30 plus minutes. Also, how do you approach giving feedback and critiques and thoughtful analysis of someone else's work to insure there's constructive feedback.

I hope you can make an episode about Kimon Nicolaïdes The Natural Way to Draw. Since Marshall mentioned it I committed myself to finish the full 375 hours of excersise. I'm about 70 hours by now, and making kind of a personal journal from my Instagram Stories (@harshStroke). It has been tough but I'm way more secure about my line quality and gesture.
