Yet strangely, Johns' attempts to rewrite DC's heroes are always being undercut if not completely discarded. He set up numerous revivals with Blackest Night/Brightest Day, only to have them canceled by Flashpoint and the New 52. He sets up Rebirth but DC doesn't push through. His Doomsday Clock sets up new continuity for DC but it gets pre-empted by Bendis and Death Metal.

This - sometimes called “Johnsian Literalism” - is how Johns is able to bring back characters who were broken and abandoned by previous editorial staff and creators who didn’t know how to make them sell. Because once the Modern/Deconstruction Age hit, the characters and their histories became overcomplicated - which was detrimental to characters who weren’t all that popular to begin with. By simplifying the character to one fundamental pillar, he makes the character feel genuine to who they were supposed to be, and it also gives him built-in themes to work the story around. Most people criticize characters being “2-Dimensional”, but Johns totally gets away with it because he’s in an industry that tends to go the opposite way and usually ends up trying too hard and messing everything up
