Depending on what military units are around, you can get them regularly at college games. They time it with the national anthem, so it is good practice in flying over a very specific point at a very specific moment. So it is a great deal of fun that is also "training".

Yes, they are considered training time for military flight crews. The crews have to have a certain amount of "flight time" monthly to maintain active flying status. That isn't a big issue for full time military flight crews but can be for National Guard/Reserves crews. I used to live south of Buckley AFB in the Denver area, we had planes coming over often, mostly F-16's and you tell when the Air Guard crews were getting their time in. I know that crews from Buckley and the installations in Colorado Springs did flyovers for the Denver Broncos, usually they were Air Guard crews getting their required flight time in. The same type of situation is true for flyovers at The University of Oklahoma football games. Typically there is a flyover at all home games for most NFL and many college teams.

We did have them somewhat regularly at the University of Notre Dame (in northern Indiana, ~2 hours east of Chicago), since we had an Air National Guard base in Fort Wayne nearby. They few A-10s primarily, which I enjoyed because they're one of my favorites - but when we'd play a military service academy's team (Navy, Air Force, etc.) it was almost a guarantee we'd get a great flyover. When we played Navy we had the Blue Angels demonstration team's F-18's join on a few occasions, and we even had a B-2 flyover against Air Force. I remember that one as pretty special, but also the timing of their arrival being juuust a little late so we in the marching band had to hold that last note for a long time! We were facing away from where it was coming from, so just holding that note until you begin to FEEL then hear the rumble of its approach was a fun moment. (See that B-2 flyover here, obviously not my video as I was on the field: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ib6EZK5zmsfGZ2Q.html)

As an American, I watch videos like this and think, “God, that’s so American!” 😂 We’re so ridiculous, but I kinda like our ridiculousness. There’s a great video out there on all the strategic planning that the pilots have to go through to do this. They also time it to fly over at precisely the end of the singing of the national anthem. It’s crazy! I think someone else mentioned it as well. Oh, btw, I believe the flyover for the superbowl will be the first time it’s a team of all female pilots. I’m pretty sure I read that somewhere.

Most NFL & MLB teams in America will sponsor a "Military Appreciation" day each yr. They provide free admission to miltary members and their families, have special pre game cermonies and awards, unfurl a field size american flag and then top it off with a fly over @ the end of singing the American anthym. I've been to both Football and Baseball military appreciation days in San Diego. With the massive military presence in Southern California they put on a pretty spectacular show here. Flyovers are also done for more significant games, playoffs, bowl games etc for both College and NFL.

The answer to your question as to why the flyovers (specifically military flyovers only) is all about American pride. After singing the national anthem (i.e.".....and the home of the brave") it is within seconds thereafter the flyover comes roaring in. It's all about the timing as well. All of the military pilots are in sync with the military radio communication/and local air towers below them. Did you know that? Thank you for sharing.

I went to college in Pensacola Florida and lived just off Pensacola Bay on a branch called "East Bay" The Blue Angels had their winter home there and practiced their AMAZING routine over the Gulf Coast area. Every Wednesday if you were not up by 10 a.m., you WERE UP by 10:03 A.M... I would get up and sit on our dock 100 yards out into East Bay on Wednesdays and the "Solo" plane would come RIPPING over, just 50-75 FEET above the Pine Trees INVERTED and would vanish across the Bay in seconds. The noise was INCREDIBLE! You could SEE the "Naval Aviator", (don't call them pilots, they get upset.) as he blew by. The tops of the Trees would sway and you could feel the jet blast. I would always wave to the Aviators and after a Month he noticed me. He began to "waggle" his wings as he went pass and even turned on the smoke generator sometimes as he went past. Check out a Blue Angels video, there are several good ones on KZfaq.. Great as always, Rick Charleston SC.

My father flew for the Air Force. They would fight over who got the flyovers. Each crewman, pilots in particular, have to have a certain amount of aircraft hours to maintain their aircraft rating. Some missions are more coveted than others- a joint Army/Air Force maneuver where you're sleeping in a tent and 'eating snakes' at Ft. Benning would be the least attractive way to get flight hours. A flyover is in a nice city, you get a good hotel, good food, and some of the crew gets to watch the game. It's one of the best training trips you could pull.

I know it was mentioned by others, but the NFL Films does a nice explanation and even has video of the planning stages from the military side, and I think even on the planes themselves. The TLDR is just that it also makes a good opportunity for a training exercise for pilots and commanders to coordinate to be exactly in the right place at the right time (and make adjustments along their flight path) since it's typically timed to finish at the end of the National Anthem. Also because it's badass.

I believe they were F35’s. As they pass by it showed they only had 1 jet engine. The F22 has 2 engines. The solo plane right after was a F22 because you could see both afterburners light up as the pilot pulled into the steep climb. The shape of the F22 and F35 are very similar as they share basic stealth design elements. The easiest way I’ve found to tell them apart from distance is to look for the spacing of the rear elevators. The F22 has to accommodate 2 jet engines so they’re spaced farther apart.

The flyovers are common. The services need their guys to fly for practice and to stay current in the planes so it's a training exercise and the services get promotion value out of it as well. It's also really cool. I'll never forget parking cars for AFROTC when 4 F4s flew over my head. It was POW/MIA week so one of them kicked in its afterburners and pulled out for missing man formation. That's 8 J79 jet engines pointed back at me 200 ft up. It was said to be proof of an amazing aeronautical principle: that “a brick can fly if you stick a big enough engine on it.”

The best "flyover" I ever saw was at a Cleveland Indians v. California Angels baseball game in 1979. The Cleveland Air Show was the same weekend and a RAF Avro Vulcan bomber was just taking off for its demonstration in the show. It went right over the light tower at old Municipal Stadium and scared the wee out of much of the crowd. The stadium was just to the left of runway 24 and required just a short jink to the left on takeoff. It was spectacular.

A lot of people don't realize this, but we do these flyovers as a recruiting opportunity. They actually cost a bit in terms of fuel. They ARE good training tools for timing and coordination (They are timed to a specific part of the National Anthem), and they are usually not done by themselves. That is, they usually continue on with a planned training exercise, but the MAIN purpose is to inspire people to become part of it all. Very much like the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds are recruiting tools. Kids go to these games, see (and feel!) the aircraft and want to be a part of it. Want to work on them someday. Want to fly them.

Any public events like flyovers have to have a recruiting component with it. Flyovers are expensive and just getting flight hours in isn't a good enough reason. The recruit commands get involved to make sure that it gets potential recruits The same thing happens for the Marine Corps silent drill team. The schedule for their annual tour is extensively vetted by recruiting command to ensure the biggest impact on recruiting.

Yeah, it looks like the question has been answered a few times here, and I didn't even know the answer, but the answers do make sense as to how and when Flyovers are done. It looks like if the stadium or track (in the case of auto racing) is near a military airbase, which most are, if you wanna get right down to it, especially if you're just talking about a National Air Guard base, they'll use the Flyovers as opportunities to train and get their flying hours in. So it's a Win-Win situation for both the Sports arena and the military.

Whats going on is basicly the pilots of the various aircraft in the various forces have to keep a number of flight hours logged. Plus you have other training missions like 'time over target' where they have to pass over the target location at a given time. So what the pilot's do is use those various football games and such for those types of things.

This is one way to do that and promote the military kind of like a recruiting tool. Also the pilots will frequently be brought into the game and introduced sometime during the game and that always gets the fans jazzed up.

It happens for some bigger games, some certain teams, and some special events. I remember the first college football game I went to was the day before the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and we had one for that for example. Games featuring top teams (ie Ohio State vs Michigan) are usually a safe bet too. Finally some teams may get more than others due to the teams nature alone. (specifically Air Force probably has a few more than usual I would bet)

The one's I have seen at Alabama games will bring the pilots down on the field during half time to recognize them. I'm pretty sure this isn't just unique to Alabama but imagine it is done at a lot if not all of the fly overs. Also another interesting thing is the pilots show up a few days prior and fly around I'm guessing to locate everything and get timing correct. You can see them doing this all over the city and surrounding county.

It’s mainly reserves and national guard that need the flight time and a flyover is a perfect chance

I do enjoy these flyover in spite of getting a daily dose of them from living about 5 miles from NAS Norfolk (the worlds largest naval base) and from Langley AFB which is about 20 miles away. My house was built in 1941 and still has most of the original single-pane windows which provide precious little insulation from the sound of the fighters and helicopters. This is especially true when there is a low cloud deck. Well, just last week, a massive C-130 came over Very low. I'm not complaining, it's "The sound of freedom."

Flyovers are more than just for publicity (which it's really good for that), but the military uses flyovers as a training exercises. The way you plan and execute a flyover is the same way you plan and execute a strike on a target. Plus pilots need flight hours to stay proficient. Get your pilots flight hours, plus some good publicity to the public. Win/win.

Almost anywhere you go will have some kind of airbase a short flight away that will take any excuse to fly a training mission. Every state has an Air National Guard, for example. Heck, just last weekend my local college team held a public SPRING PRACTICE GAME against itself, and even that was enough to get a flyover. To reiterate, this wasn't even a friendly or an exhibition match, it was just a practice game with no opponent 😂

Glad you've brought up FLYOVERS. I think the best of these videos is the NFL Films: Flyover : America's Greatest Pregame Tradition. It comes with a little explanation. KC Chief's are within an hour of auto drive time from stealth bomber and A 10 warthog base. You'll see Arrowhead stadium in more than clip. But it's the art of precision flying that's important. To have the ability to be at the 50 yard line when the last note of the National Anthem is played is awesome. Check it out.

The military is funny like that. They love to do things just to "look cool". I imagine that some dude had to wake up at 3am and prep the aircraft. As an American soldier who stood in parade formation for hours so President Bush could drive by for 2 seconds, I can relate... but it probably looked cool. It's good training, and "Preventative Checks and Maintenance Service" on the equipment; so hey, why not fly over the football stadium? Check that recruiting box at the same time.

Hello guy's, since you've gotten so many great suggestions for "flyovers" in the comments, I'd like to make another suggestion, in case you're interested "Southeastern Conference College Football Stadiums" (by the channel: The Wide World of Stadiums) there is also the "Atlantic Coast Conference College Football Stadiums" the primary difference between the ACC and the SEC is how many universities invest in their facilities, coaches and more. For example: Clemson and Florida State invest in their facilities each season. In comparison, the SEC has at least 6 universities spending money on their football programs each season. I'm always impressed with the flyovers, I don't know how anyone couldn't be impressed...they're massive. lol Really enjoyed your reaction and hope you enjoy the super bowl. fellas👍

Figured I'd give you guys a list of the types of jets/choppers I see flying over in this vid, from first to last: B-2 Spirit (stealth bomber), B-52 Stratofortress, a flight of AH-64 Apaches, UH-60 Blackhawks and a CH-47 Chinook, F16 Falcons, F15 Eagles, AH-64 Apaches again, C-17 Globemaster, honestly no clue with the huge amount of planes here, two F-35 Lightning IIs and another B-2, F-22 Raptor to end things off

The real reason for these Flyovers, flyovers have their origin in World War I. The first combat aviators passed over battlefields after an engagement to let those on the ground count planes to learn if their mission was successful or if friendly aviators were lost.

Those were Apaches, not Blackhawks. Blackhawks were the ones in the first helo flyover where y'all counted like 9 of them. Great vid. We don't get flyovers here in New Orleans for Saints games since we have a covered dome for our stadium (the Superdome), so we wouldn't be able to see them, but we do have a nearby Air Force base.

I dunno what everyone else is commenting about but in America, we do flyovers for anything. High school graduation? Do a flyover. Fancy wedding? Do a flyover. Big concert? Do a flyover. Flyovers aren't a big deal, but it just makes people think whatever they're attending is a big deal. That's America for you. Always making ourselves feel more important than we actually are.
@FourFish47

You're welcome to leave any time, and I disagree with you that they're done for any petty reason to make Americans feel good. Those pilots went through a shitload of training and practice. They have to study weather and timing and possible obstructions. They also fought for Americans like you to say stupid stuff. You owe them! Maybe if you weren't on KZfaq criticizing you could accomplish something. Go play your video games.
