Hi Saffron, I lost my wife to cancer last December and I feel so lonely now, come this June I will fully retire from my job, I will have lots of free time to ride my bike and I was wondering if I should take to the road with my bike and tour around to pass my time , I have taken your videos to heart of what is possible to do with my time thanks to you, I have been riding for 21 years police trained and tested but I feel that you have taught me a lot with regards to touring and camping and what can be achieved, I need to do something with my life because at times I feel like ending it because I can't see myself living without my wife, hopefully my motorcycle and traveling may distract me from these thoughts of not wanting to live and take me on a journey to occupy my retirement time x

Two months ago I set off for a bike rally, then just meandered off north, taking my time, going to places on my bucket list. Sixteen days on the road, 2,482 miles.....ish.....🤣🤣🤣.....and pretty much all round Scotland before I returned home. Only booked one night, 24 hours in advance, a Hobbit pod at Glencoe Mountain Resort. I'm 66, had the most wonderful time, pretty much camping all the way. Go for it chap, use your lovely Lady as your motivation. Enjoy, stop for an extra night somewhere to wash all of your clothes- I did that on the Isle of Skye. I carried six days of tee shirts, socks and pants....who cares...just buzz off and enjoy!!

Hey Duncan! I'm sorry to hear you're going through a rough time! I hope things get better for you soon! Travelling has often helped me through some bad times and its a great way to put things into perspective. I lost a close family member to cancer over 2 years ago, there's no nicer way to express the experience other then it being utter horseshit and I wish that no one would have to go through it. For quite some time, I carried my relatives ashes with me on my journeys to leave in places she had never visited. There would always be moments of sadness but I try to make up for it by having enough adventure for 2! I hope that we will meet at a future event and you can tell me about your first adventure :) Please e-mail me if you're going to attend any of the events I'll be at in the future and I'll be sure to put some time aside for a brew to listen to about your first camping trip! If you ever do need to talk to someone, Samaritans are a great charity, even if its just to talk about the weather - Their phone number is 116 123 and they're available 24/7! In the meantime, stay stay and I look forward to hearing your stories in person one day!

Hi Saffy, you don't need to cringe at your first packing video. You did exactly the right thing at the time. You bought cheap and made do. And you still went adventuring. Too many people think you can't go bike adventuring unless you have a brand new enormous BMW GS complete with specialised luggage, extra lights etc. My message is to get out there and enjoy your bike as best you can. Don't wait for the perfect bike and the perfect kit. Also what is wrong with Duck tape? When I fell off in the Sahara desert in Morocco and broke my headlight glass, I bodged a new glass from the market in Marakesh with the best quality Duck tape. It did the job OK for the rest of my trip. You are an aspirational model for would be adventure riders to look up to. Well done.

A long time ago I read an article about touring in some bike mag or other - can't even remember where or what it was now. But it had one small gem: "Luggage expands to fill the available space, so I get the smallest panniers I can get away with."

Great idea to do a "then and now" packing video. Just to say,, you can get totally waterproof soft luggage, cheap and expensive options. I've got two Lomo saddle bags, roll top, plain as muck, no "features", but they kept contents dry on a 6hr ride in pretty much constant very heavy rain. They're are pros and cons for all types, and the compromises we choose will always be personal choices in the end.

In Australia we get other fun challenges. Tour the red center and you learn to wrap gear once, twice, three times in sealed plastic, then in a bag and it still gets covered in fine red dust. Thanks for this video because to help others learn you can now say I did this, this was the result, this is what I learnt so now I do that. I you hadn't "got it wrong" how would you have learnt to do it right. And hope none of the touring bikers out there actually bullied you. The ones I met are usually the ones who stop to check you're ok.

Life is always a learning curve in everything we do, and it’s great you can smile about all your mistakes, we’ve all been there for sure. I’m a great believer in less is more and pack really lightly, even when not on the bike travelling it’s hand luggage everywhere. If you’re happy with your choices that’s what matters and if anyone questions you, stuff them🤭

Very usefull vid! I def think your tent is a tempter. For me being able to cover the bike and store stuff perhaps hang a few things up is ideal. But for now think am going to do Bed and breakfasts...just take one backpack. Well second bike isnt really going to be a "tourer" but as a few people say you can tour on anything. As am still a learner am playing it a bit safe till have passed my test.

@@SaffySprocket for me it's just going out and doing moto camp/ wild camping I bought all the camping gear tent,sleeping bed, cooking items etc but I have been to afraid or made up silly reasons not to do it so I've been watching videos that you've been doing like traveling to places of interest and now wild camp which are all wonderful to watch, so you can say I was living my travels I wanted to do by watching your videos 🙂. But after watching your videos again and seeing all the up's and downs you have had travel, that 9.5/10 times you have a smile on you face and it's made me more confident to do it myself 🙂. One thing I got myself and thought it might be good for you, if you are planning to do future camping/ wild camping when it is more sunny maybe a small solar power battery change/ bank for your phone and camera's. I have one that I use for my phone so your phone and camera will always be charged saves on carrying spare battery and I will a power bank at night if you need it and the one I have has a touch on it too 😂. Ikea has great clear resealable bags in all sizes, with a double closure, they close more easely and more firmly. I use these all the time for camping. (istad) 18:35 cotton is the worst because it looses a dangerous amount of insulation properties when wet, the great benefit of merinowool is that it insulates even when wet.

Ditch the mallet Saffy - you can always find a rock. Don't use your boots to push in tent pegs either as they are likely to bend. And what type of sleeping bag did you buy (down for dry climates & synthetic for damp as the latter will dry out quicker)? Keep the videos coming!

I always use merino wool socks when I'm touring. As well as being warm, merino wool is antibacterial, so you can wear them for days at a time. I had a pair on for 7 days and my daughter came round to visit when I got home. I said, excitedly, "Look at my new socks, they're pure wool. you can even smell the freshness of the wool in them". She had a feel and a sniff and agreed they were lovely new socks with a wooly smell. I then told her I'd been wearing them for 7 days straight!! 🤣🤣 you only need one pair for riding and the other pair for in the tent.

My main difference is I will not do (I would stop motocamping if I had to) is eat camping food, be it freeze dried, dehydrated, pre chewed, etc. I shop fresh every day, and I can cook just about anything on a campfire. My only nod to 'instant 'is I do pack some oatmeal with dried cranberries and almonds for mornings I'm not starting a fire. Coffee is made in a French press. I agree about clothing, instead of changing into 'street clothes' at camp, my base layer is fine. I always pack one wrinkle free sundress for a trip to town.

Try pot noodles they are good! But yeah not great for you. (If I had to live off something for a few days camping then yeah hot water...tea + pot noodle would suffice)

If you're okay with shelling out a bit more on the cost then I can't recommend hard luggage enough, especially if you like having dry things! What brand are you looking at going with? And I invest a lot in keeping the nest on my head together, so yes, you can say that 💁🏼‍♀️😂

I think everyone learns what works for them along the way. Very comprehensive video with many good tips and some hard learned lessons such as tent peg in your foot - ouch! I will add a few of my own carries. 1. Shampoo in a small bottle kept in a sealed sandwich bag. Shampoo makes an excellent clean up soap as well as degreaser if needed after roadside repairs. 2. A hat with a sun bill, I often travel in high temps 40c plus and lots of sun. If you need to stop its good to have a hat. 3. Since motorcycle boots are not necessarily the best for walking I bring a comfortable set of light weight shoes. 4. A paper map. I've had technology fail. Also the allow for you to get the big picture of where you are if you need to pick alternative routes rather than searching a small screen. I'll leave you with this quote, "An absurdity, however, does not cease to be an absurdity when we have discovered what were the appearances which made it plausible" JSM. Which only re-enforces your laughter!

You are simply evolving as you go, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Let’s face it how many people can afford to buy top of the range motorcycle clothing when they are starting motorcycling? Top of the range lid, top Rukka suit and Daytona boots = £3500 + gloves. Accommodation wise, I personally have got to the stage where I would prefer to use hotels rather than camp. I obviously realise there is an increased cost, but I think it’s worth it, especially when you start going away for a week or more it means everything fits in the panniers and top box + a small tank bag for passport, money etc. on the new bike I haven’t purchased the panniers yet, so in a couple of weeks time I know how a top box and large soft bag on the back seat works out, as I’m touring for a week.
@SaffySprocket
@SaffySprocket 2 жыл бұрын
I do love staying in hotels, don't get me wrong, but also I geniuenlly really enjoy camping more. I think motorcycle touring is just one of those things where there's no right or wrong way really, you just need to pick how you enjoy it and roll with it. Hotels, hostels, camping etc etc are all valid ways to travel, there's no *right* way to travel :)

Don't apologize for not being able to afford better gear. I just got a Himalayan and I can't afford any bags for it. However, my bicycle saddle bags will clip on the engine guards. Temporary dry bag solution. It will probably be next year before I can gather what I need to go camping. I love your attitude though. Have fun and enjoy.

True true! When I started earlier on in camping, a lot of my gear was a "make do" situation, I've been slowly upgrading it as I go. I suspect in a couple of years, I'll probably have much nicer stiff but in the beginning it was more important for me to get traveling than it was to wait to buy nice gear

Rok Straps, Exped dry bags, Memory Map os mapping which you can store for offline use and having 1:50000 and 1:25000 scale is great for exploring down random country lanes. “The reason I had 2 sleeping bags is i was broke” - this is one of the reasons I started following your channel….not that you were broke but that you were doing this real life, not with £10k of kit (exaggerated a tiny bit) you’re real and honest so 👏 on that. Life straw is very handy in fairness, I got one for hillwalking to save me having to carry as much water and in turn the occasional overnight camp on a Munro somewhere.

Honestly when I first started the channel I did have some insecurities comparing myself to other, larger creators who seemed like they'd just materialised with a fully fleshed-out kit and all the tech, but I think the most enjoyable part of documenting my riding so far has actually been the fact that I'm starting from the beginning, and being able to capture all the learning experiences that come with being a beginner. I can't say that I haven't made some happy memories, and generated some funny stories 😃 Out of curiosity, which Munros have you done so far?
