Bill Gates has frequently stated, “I never took a day off in my twenties. Not one.” He goes on, “When I was in my 20s and early 30s, my whole life was focused on work. I didn’t take vacations or weekends off. I was always the first in the office and the last to leave….”

I was a programmer for about 30 years. I switched to Linux about 3 years ago because of all the data collection that Windows does now. I do, however, fundamentally disagree with all the Linux guys who just hate on Microsoft from the very beginnings of the company. Gates was in the right places at the right times, made the right decisions whereas the others just didn't, and he worked his ass off to become what he became. I have much respect for the man.

Gates bought TWO mansions in a local Indian Wells country club near Palm Springs. One of the mansions was for his dad. As I owned a rather successful computer company back when he first moved in, I had many customers in Gates' country club, The Vintage. Often looking for savings on my food bills for my swelling family, I would go to the local Indian Wells Ralph's supermarket. I would frequently run into Gates buying soda and small amounts of food. Apparently, he preferred cheeseburgers, but he was not adverse to eating some Mac & Cheese and such. He ALWAYS had coupons, which cracked me up, and he always shopped alone, with no bodyguards or helpers. THAT kind of freaked me out. Wasn't the world's richest man afraid of being kidnapped or something?! Apparently not. Also, as he is reported possibly to have a "spectrum" disorder, I can testify quite honestly that his interpersonal skills in public were impeccable. He was ALWAYS cheerful, friendfly, and was nice to anyone who accosted him. He was especially friendly with the cashiers. Overall, he was more than just down-to-earth; he was a really nice guy whenever I saw him. Mad respect for Gates. He's a good man who puts on NO airs whatsoever. Many local, self-important millionaires could take a lesson from him just by watching. Our neighborhood would be a much nicer place if they did. You go, Bill! Keep on doing your thing!
@mooniejohnson
@mooniejohnson 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, having coupons means you're fiscally responsible... 😛 Yeah, Gates has always seemed to be someone who looked at his wealth as "hey, it happened... I can make a comfy living, donate a ton of it, and be a friendly dude." Why act like a snobbish arse just because you have money?
@JLHunter61
@JLHunter61 4 жыл бұрын
Yep. Basically, you summed up his personality quite well. He shops and acts like a a super-friendly soccer mom. lol He's a funny guy, but I think he would still be just as happy with a 50k a year job repairing computers. He's just happy...though I do think that his work ethic and OCD traits might have driven him to turn his little repair shop into a worldwide computer emporium or something. He loves to work and he likes being successful. And if you can do that with a great attitude and a smile, why shouldn't you be successful? Go, Bill!!!

England 17th century. Though a lot of swearing is in good old fashioned Anglo-Saxon in "court" (royal not legal) French was spoken including for insults until surprisingly recently (apparently mid 18th century at least). This is also why we have some French words for meats (mutton/mouton and Beef/Boef) that do not match the word for the animal (though it does in French) and the word for the animal is usually Latin or again Anglo-Saxon (porci is Latin for Pork) cow comes from Cuw (pronounced like coo but with a w as from which) and I think sheep is from shep.

I suspect that MS would have come ahead eventually as they still would have made the BASIC for the IBM. Its a guess. Funny story, when i was 18, worked at a place called the "Robot Club and Grille". I had no idea, but the guy who opened it, was the creator of Lycos. He lived local to me. It was a battlebots style place with a restaurant. I was one of the techs who worked on repairing the robots. He drove this older mini van, not in the best shape, and didn't spend much money (besides the $750,000 for the restaurant/robot fighting arenas). He was a hustler, though. i really wish that had caught on, as it was a fun place, and had good food. Just lack of people coming in on "non robot event days" led to it's closure only a year after opening.

Despite the criticisms of some in the comments, the tendency of people starting their own business to work every day of the week and rarely take vacations is something I have noticed as well. I had a friend who ran his own story for over a decade before finally having to close down due to changes in the market. His store was open seven days a week and he would work at least one shift running the store himself, while spending many hours a week researching new products, attending trade shows, and placing orders for product. It's not a pace a person can easily sustain for their entire life. But it's a pace often necessary for a startup business.

My buddy opened his own brewery and sandwich shop in Santa Cruz and poured everyday of his life into it for ten years. He just closed it a few months ago and is happier than I've seen him in a long time. Now he's a wine and beer purchaser at a hippie grocery store making like $20/hr. His townhouse is paid for so between that and his wife's salary they have plenty to live and now he gets to ski and mountain bike again. The brewery was awesome but it really sapped his life away.

About cheeseburgers - the best I have ever tasted is made at Addy's Cafe in Lake Worth, TX. About working 24/7, I sort of did that for a while, starting up a software company back in the 90's - it was an odd scenario. For complex reasons my employer put me in a position which gave me a lot of spare time at the office computer, so I'd develop software at work, copy it to 3.5 inch floppy, then at home I'd copy it to my home computer, work on it some more then copy *that* to disk, go to work, copy to work computer, etc etc. I slowed down once we got the business up and running and I left my old job. You know, evening and weekends with family, four weeks vacation a year etc. Probably why I'm not as rich as Bill.

Back in the 90's, I sent Microsoft a request for a Bill Gates autograph. About a month later I got a reply from someone at Microsoft saying that Mr Gates schedule was busy but he would get to my request. Another bunch of weeks passed and I received a small colored, personally autographed photo from the richest man on earth.

I started working at age 19 and took my first vacation at age 31. From age 22 to 23 I took a second job and worked on weekends and holidays as well. All of that whilst studying Chemical Engineering. Nowadays I seldom work past 5:30 PM and almost never on weekends yet live a very pleasent life. You must push yourself whilst young if you want to be a little laid back later on.

Bill Gates is perhaps the only ultra-wealthy person I actually like. He spends his wealth lavishly on things that benefit humanity, which can be said about maybe one other ultra-wealthy person ever if you include Alfred Nobel for setting up the Prize to encourage scientific advancement.

Charity isn't actually uncommon among the super wealthy. Philanthropy is actually in the top 5 most common hobbies of the super wealthy. Bill Gates is just the posterboy of rich charity. And that's before considering the source of their wealth. Which put into the most basic terms, is value exchange. X Person provides high value to society (in this case, operating systems), other people pay for said value a price based upon supply & demand. X person becomes uber wealthy as a result. The rich are rich because they gave society something it desperately wanted/needed.

i worked as an animator in computer graphics from 1985 onwards until i retired a while ago, my first job out of college though was working for digital pictures, one of the leading edge graphics houses in soho, and my direcr boss was only interested in making pop videos and hand animated commercials, so at first i did very little computer graphics, what i did do was tons of storyboards for prospective tv titles, commercials and other stuff (i did worl on a top of the pops title and much later i did the balloon lettering for the teletibbies program) but i would often work all night and many's the time i'd fall asleep over a light box and wake up with my forehead glued to it.

Bill Gates + day off? I didn't know that ever happend. He didn't get to be a multibillionaire by taking days off or sleeping too much. As far as I know no billionaire ever sleeps more than 6 hours a day and more or less has no weekends, that's a common trait.
