What does digeh دیگه mean in Persian Farsi?

Why do Iranians always say "digeh" دیگه? What does it mean? This is probably one of the top 3 questions I get asked. Iranians want to know how to say it in English, and Persian learners want to know why Iranians use it all the time. Recently, someone commented asking this question, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to explain it further. I wrote about this topic a few years ago on my blog, and I'll be reading the examples from there since I didn't have time to make a formal PPT this week. They are good examples, though, and hopefully, they will make digeh more clear. I also think it's a good idea to hear the examples as tone, stress, etc. make a difference. Sometimes, digeh is easy to translate. Other times, when it's used for emphasis, not so much. Today, I'm using "input flooding" to explain "digeh" and its uses, which I think is the best way to understand it.
As I was making this video, a better way to translate digeh came to me- just. I think a scene from the movie "Spanglish" seeped into my subconscious. If you've seen the movie, you know there's a scene where Flor (Paz Vega's character) asks her daughter Cristina how to say "ándale, pruébatelo" in English. But there's a certain nuance she's looking for. And eventually, Cristina's eyes light up when she finds it- just! "Just try it on!" she says. In Persian, we'd probably use "digeh" here. This is the scene I'm talking about:
• Spanglish: Just try it on

Many words within different Iranian languages have underwent a sort of "Arabization" after the Arab conquests and I'm guessing this is one of them. Arabs don't have the hard G sound or the P sound therefore many words with these sounds changed. For example the endonym of the Persian language changed from "Parsi" to "Farsi" because Arabs dont have the P sound. I'm guessing that's why "Digeh" changed to "Dikeh" in Sorani.

@@yarsaz4347what is your point? arabs never tried to learn kurdish. On the other hand kurdish doesn't have as many Arabic loanwords as Persian has.

@@rastisdiq4142 It's not an Arabic loanword. It's a word that's been Arabized in Sorani. Big difference. The root of the word isn't Arabic but it has underwent a change and the G has turned into a K.

Excellent Video. Perhaps a similar video with هم? In all of its iterations either alone, as part of a word, or as a suffix it seems to mean so much more than "also". Thank you for all of your videos. 😊

This is so helpful! When I first started learning Persian دیگه was my worst enemy! But also my favorite word. Haha. But now I know! Have you ever done short private video call classes? I would be interested in doing that with you! You just name the price :) I want to learn more than I currently know but it is very hard not having people to speak with. Thank you for all your hard work!
