The rise in the popularity of the bicycle also helped the change in women’s clothing. It was hard to ride a bike while wearing many layers of skirts, petticoats and corsets
@daedaliavallis9805
@daedaliavallis9805 2 жыл бұрын
Have you tried wearing a corset? I've done it, and it's actually pretty easy riding a bike with a corset. I've done with skirts too by tying the extra material up, women's bikes were designed to accomodate skirts by angling the bar down instead of straight across. Anyway, corsets are extremely comfortable garments when worn correctly, especially if you have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. The extra hold really helps keep joints stable and I never feel quite as fatigued with one because my muscles aren't working so hard. I did a whole big fashion history research a while back when I heard someone else comment on the history of corsets and why they fell out of fashion! Turns out corsets were demonized and stigmatized during WWI because they wanted the silk and metal for war equipment, including parachutes. Silk stockings were likewise attacked and replaced with nylon, and then even nylon was yanked away because they found it was better for parachutes than even silk. Corsets were replaced by brassieres (bras), a thoroughly uncomfortable garment every bra-wearer claims to dispense with immediately upon returning home. IIRC the flapper era was largely affected by the corset demonization, too!

@@daedaliavallis9805 corsets yes, but I can imagine it causing difficulty when added to an outfit that includes other slightly restrictive garments. I have corsets and love them but if I had to do certain activities, I definitely wouldn't wear other restrictive clothing with my corset because the corset would inhibit compensating for the other garments most likely. Just depends. Gardening in a corset or skinny jeans? Sure. Gardening in both? Unlikely I would subject myself to that unless forced

@chukyuniqul
@chukyuniqul 2 жыл бұрын
That's just fussy. Language is context-based. The "perceived as" is implied if you establish it beforehand. You don't need to add roundabouts in conversation when just settling terminology at the start (or where communication breaks down) does the job perfectly fine and doesn't lengthen expression to the point it looks like a terms of service agreement. "People perceived as men, shortened to men for the sake of this video" would have done. It would have clarified that every "men" is preceded by "people perceived as" without wasting limited time and letting OP talk about additional things. And I'm sorry, I'm really for inclusivity. Well and truly. But there is a point where you're just fussing. And if you're being hurt that you being included is only stated at the beginning of a presentation and not every point where it can then that is just fussing.

As a matter of fact, busks were sometimes made of wood. Not so much in corsets, since the busks in those included (and still do include) fasteners so they could be put on and removed without unlacing, but stays generally had (and still have) a busk made of ivory or wood (well, I mean, people aren't exactly using ivory in stays anymore, but they do still use wooden busks). I think busks might have also sometimes been made of baleen, same as the stays' bones, but I'd verify that before quoting me on it. (To clarify, not every pair of stays was boned with baleen, some used bundles of reeds called 'bents'.)
@arcanelore3791

It may not be the entire point of the short, but I’m going to gently point you toward CosTube on this one. Corsets were not some sort of symbol of oppression , nor were they uncomfortable. They were only harmful when tightlaced, which was extremely rare and only practiced by a handful of rich upperclass people. Corsets (and stays before them, bodies before that, and kirtles before that) functioned primarily as bust support. For more info, I recommend dress historian Bernadette Banner’s thoroughly cited and enjoyable video ‘’I Grew Up In a Corset. Time To Bust Some Myths. (Ft. Actual Research)’’. Also worth looking into are Abby Cox’s videos ‘’Reacting to the “History of the Corset” || Busting (very weird) corset myths’’, and also ‘’Reacting to Vogue’s “Everything You Need to Know About the Corset” cause we haven’t suffered enough.’’, both of which feature around five different dress historians and are quite funny.

Jessica actually owns her own custom corsetry for her scoliosis (much like Bernadette, I believe) which also helps with EDS, so I'm pretty sure she wasn't demonising them! She has a video about going to be fitted for it and I think has said she wears it fairly often as a support garment There were definitely people in the dress reform movement who rejected corsetry as uncomfortable and unnecessary while others argued that they found it necessary for support and comfort - just like people do now with bras! Mentioning that the dress reform movement included the rejection of corsets in addition to dresses and petticoats isn't inaccurate, even if it's not the main reason for them going out of fashion

Where in this video did you get the implication that corsets were a symbol of oppression/uncomfortable? She owns a real corset herself and I believe what she said was true. Corsets were an expected/required aspect of women’s daily dress, and that idea was eventually challenged by feminists.

One of my best male friends in college (89, 90, 91) wore dresses on a fairly regular basis. He wasn't really a cross dresser in the classical sense. He firmly believed that the conventions concerning dress (among other things) were hypocritical so he went against many of them as much as he thought he could, at that time.

My grandfather, born in the 1910s, did not like women wearing trousers and neither of my grandmothers ever wore them. It's fair enough that some things are more 'feminine' or more 'masculine', because people like to emphasise certain characteristics, but it shouldn't be exclusionary. Making it exclusionary actually makes it seem like female things are still 'inferior'. So many things around transphobia seem to be deeply rooted in patriarchy.

I think part of the reason dresses aren’t as popular with men is that dresses aren’t often tailored for them. Women’s pants tend to be sewn to accentuate the feminine form and lean into popular women’s styles. If some dresses were tailored to better accentuate male forms and leaned into popular men’s styles (camo and big pockets - which should also be added to women’s dresses/pants - and more flannel and button-up, etc.) this will encourage men to wear dresses more.

Just out of curiousity are there words for "people perceived as men/women" or "people who have periods" that is inclusive to those people but don't have so many consonents? You could have one word to deal with problems and situations involving being biologically male and perceived as male and another word for the female equivelent. Ideally this word wouldn't have any current reference to any idea of sex or gender so the new word wouldn't carry any known connotations either.

I, unfortunately, haven't been able to move past my hatred of dresses. They're a big symbol of how much I was shoved into "being a girl" as a kid, along with skirts. Calling it traumatic to be told I had to wear a dress, that I couldn't buy men's clothes (and being mocked for doing so by friends), "what do you want, to be a boy?", It feels reductive to even my own trauma, but it's the truth. I don't think I'll ever be able to comfortably wear a dress. Which sucks, because they provide a lot of drama to one's wardrobe.

I really hope you get to the parts with the gold star lesbians and how we need to stop that movement at all costs because it's coming back with teenaged zoomers and they refuse to be educated, because they feel the queer identities shouldn't actually exist outside of hard and fast boxes of attraction. Like you can't even explain to them that stealth lesbians may be married to a man and have children with that man and actually have some affection for that man and still be lesbians. And because they won't listen about history or about the fact that many of their lesbian elders may have kids from a man whom they were married to and may even love on a certain level, you can't get through to them because they themselves are gold star lesbians and don't recognize that it's not the same thing as being a 'real lesbian' versus being 'some sort of fake because you've had contact with a man'.

Harry Styles' dresses are hideous. He can wear dresses, I wear them too sometimes but the ones he chooses are such eyesores I don't think it's doing much to normalize dresses for men tbh

No, because some people might be perceived as male or female, but they aren't. But still people treat them like that. And she wants to include this people. For example: you could have XY chromosomes, but look like a woman, but don't feel like a woman. So you are not a woman, not a man, but you are perceived as a woman. And treated as such. Or you are a transwoman, you don't look like a woman (yet, because you didn't or just started your transitioning etc.) So people perceive you as a man, but you aren't. And then there are just feminine looking boys and masculine looking girls, and people are always confused what gender they are. So yeah, there are a lot of people, "perceived as" just describes a lot better.

How is percieved creepy? If you look at someone and assume they're one gender or another, you are perceiving them as that gender. You perceive everything you look at, because percieve is just a synonym for appear or see
