Sadly many IMAX Film Sites have been decommissioned the past several years. I was the last projectionist that shut down The Maritime Aquarium IMAX Film Site in January 2021. But yeah many sites have dropped Film and or converted to digital. 10 years ago TDKR was released in a couple hundred IMAX Film sites. I have a feeling Oppenheimer will be very limited to only a handful of premier only theaters especially that it is coming out around the release of the new Mission Impossible; that too will be in IMAX and more high priority

I suspect if some entrepreneurial billionaire does this it could really work. Shooting in 35mm and then showing on 35mm film projectors. And then ensure that their films have a 5 years exclusivity for theaters meaning you will not see it at home for years. Sprinkle a little bit of marketing on top and the think could take off especially if the made movies that people want to watch.

Just came back from Watching Nope in IMAX at AMC Lincoln Square ( Capable of showcasing 1.43.1 aspect ratio with Dual (2) Laser projectors ) and it was amazing and heart pounding experience, despite not being shown on 70mm imax film. I don’t mind if they show IMAX movies in Laser theaters but rarely all IMAX theaters don’t have the dual laser projectors and a huge screen, capable of displaying 1.43.1 aspect ratio. Even all the former theaters that we’re running on IMAX 15/70mm are now mostly able to display only 1.90.1 aspect ratio with only one laser projector which it’s not fair to the customers who are paying a lot of money to see the expanded image in a fake IMAX theater and also to the Filmmakers. For example Jordon Peele who had the opportunity to use IMAX film cameras but no prints were created for Nope, neither for No Time to Die and only 7 film reels were made for Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. So far I think Christopher Nolan is the only filmmaker who has the privilege to show his movies in IMAX film

You can get the exact same experience on 35mm anamorphic film. There is so much jargon flying around now that it is confusing. Digital just does not look as good as film at the end of the day. Digital video looks good on smaller screens at home but not on a large theater screen.

The biggest issue for me is not having a reliable way of knowing if the movie will be shown in 1.43 IMAX ratio or not. That's the only way I'll make sure to go to a movie in IMAX now. 1.9 IMAX just isn't all that different from regular 1.85 screens. Side note: just got back from watching Nope in IMAX. It was 1.43 and looked great. The sound wasn't too loud either.

Nolan movies are known to have the dialog volume too low and the action way too loud. It’s not just in the imax theaters but everywhere. The issue is only amplified in imax theaters because many people believe they turn the speakers up way too loud. Check it out on Google some time.

I haven't been to a 15/70 projected IMAX movie since the Dark Knight in July 2008. The next time I watched a 1.43 movie was No Time To Die in October 2021. Finding a real IMAX theater that isn't shut down or downgraded is very hard. More than the cameras themselves, the lack of theaters that show IMAX footage is more problematic in my opinion. I think Dune being shown in 1.43 despite being filmed without Imax film cameras is unique. It seems like it allowed for something close to a true imax experience without the hurdles of shooting with imax film cameras.

@@aselwyn1 4 film capable locations, that actually show them in film and not 2k digital conversions? Where are these locations? I only know of 2 "proper" IMAX screens in Toronto (Scotiabank and Ontario place). The rest show IMAX movies in disappointing 2k digital with clearly visible screen door effect, and/or don't fully expand to 1.43.

The only way we will ever see 15/70 IMAX again would be if they start and rebuild the industry around 35mm film in anamorphic. It does not mean they have to have every theater screen in 35mm projection just their best select theaters screens.

I don't know, but I really like the IMAX experience with the 4K Laser projecters, 12 channel sound system and the updated room acoustics. Everybody is so focused on the "in my opinion" unrealistic gigantic screens. The only thing that I think is really a big miss from IMAX is the inconsistencies world wide. In the Netherlands all auditoriums are updated with the latest specs, but a lot of cinemas still have the old outdated projectors, mediocre acoustics and the basic 6 channel sound system.

The inconsistencies worldwide is a good point and something I've touched on in a couple of previous videos. Some IMAX auditoriums are fantastic and others are extremely dated.

On July 1, 2023, the day after it's initial release, my family went to see the new Indiana Jones film in a town called Pooler (about 30 mins from Savannah, GA). One of the IMAX theatres there boasts the "Tallest IMAX screen in the world". The dimensions are 100ft wide by 75ft tall. I have to admit that I was sadly disappointed in the picture quality. I wish I had read up on which format would be best for viewing and audio on this particular film. It was also the first time I paid $25 per ticket at a freaking movie theatre (not in a large city). The only consolation was that I had some nice quality time with the fam! Oh, and the film itself, um... It didn't feel like a "Raiders" film. I later found out that this is the only film out of the whole franchises Spielberg did not direct. Maybe that had something to do with it. I do have to say it was not as bad as the previous film.

As an independent filmmaker, I prefer the 2.39:1 format, which is widescreen. It looks good on regular movie screens, Dolby Vision screens, and high quality 4K monitors at home. Using Dolby Atmos and Vision, I get the same experience in the theatre and home, as long as I use good playback equipment. IMAX is awesome, nothing beats the large 70mm sideways prints and the thunderous powerful sound. I love going to IMAX for films made with IMAX films. If it was shot on digital video, I prefer Dolby Cinema. Dolby is awesome in its own right. As a filmmaker, at this moment, I will stick to my preferred method. Personally, I love the 90 minute documentaries of IMAX at museums. Seeing the ocean on a huge screen is simply breathtaking. Diving into an erupting volcano is immersive and loud.

The biggest problems are that people are watching the movies on a digital system that has pixels, movies can then either be shot on film or digital. When that is the approach it really just boils down to slight artistic differences when people watch in a digital theater. Then there is a pile of industry jargon thrown around the place like it means something.

One small thing of note - IMAX's "18K" resolution isn't quite accurate. While it's true IMAX can be scanned at 18K (usually it's scanned at 11K, though, and projected digitally at 4K in laser and 2K in regular showings), the fact that it's a film format and not digital means the image is naturally going to be a bit soft even if it's scanned at 18K. If you put a 6K Arri Alexa 65 (digital) image next to an identical 11K IMAX 15/70 film image and zoom in an identical amount, you'll see that the 6K Arri is actually sharper than the 11K IMAX frame (this experiment has been done a few different times, most notably by Steve Yedlin ASC). With that said, no person (despite what some people insist) are really going to be able to perceive a difference above 4K, so 6K is plenty - but I feel it's worth noting when the 18K number goes around.

Frankly the eye candy isn't worth it. The sound is awful. Always too loud and never having dynamics at least in the theaters I have been. The Dolby experience kills IMAX in audio, while certain visuals are amazing in IMAX, the poor overly loud all the time audio is not worth it. It has to sound great and look great.
