Hi Guys,
It has been awhile since I have done a food shopping video for you all so here is a new one! This is an in-depth look into grocery prices in Italy, specifically Calabria. Food prices in Southern Italy are generally cheaper than in the North so you will likely be surprised at what all you can get with your money! Food prices here have been a lot less affected by inflation than in the U.S.

Conad definitely has a great selection. Eurospin has better prices though. Food is much cheaper and better in Italy for sure .

Hi Vincent, yes true. I shop at Eurospin for dog pee pads and certain items. I find they don't always have what I am looking for but for some things they are great.

Hi Susan! Thank you! I do buy plants every so often. We always have a big pot or two of fresh basil and rosemary for cooking and I love the lowers for our outdoor spaces. I just agreed to take a couple of rescue palms and repot them to go out front of Casa Cristina.

Food in Italy is indeed pretty cheap (and so is wine). Surprisingly though, I found that in Sicily, eating out was more expensive than on the mainland, mainly due to lack of choice. You could buy a tramezzini sandwich, piza by the slice or a panini anywhere on the mainland, but in Sicily, you have to sit down and order a whole pizza or a full meal with a coperto, a 2€ water bottle, etc... But in grocery stores, I'd say it's similar. The amount of choice for cheese, cured meats and pasta is insane. And paying less for a a bottle of wine than a 2 liter of Pepsi? Yes please!

So true however I have only been in one place in Sicily, Ortigia and I did not pay much attention to the prices. I was so taken by the beauty of the place. Italy just does food so well and I love how they have banned fake meat and weird food alterations. They keep it simple, healthy and delicious.
@hugolafhugolaf
@hugolafhugolaf 2 ай бұрын
@@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC I didn't know they had banned those. Good for them. And for those who do not eat that crap. Ortigia is a little pricey, being a semi-island and very touristy. Siracusa is ok, but kinds pricey as well. ironically, Taormina was kinda cheap, even though its main street is full of high-end boutiques.

Grazie mille per la video! I remember the first time I went shopping for groceries at a supermercato in Lucca and discovered that the prices for meat and produce were by the Kilo. When I got to the check out stand and read the receipt, I thought they had made a mistake. I love the prices for vino especially the local varieties. When you were in the cookie section I immediately thought about chocolate Pan Stelle with the crema inside and the stars on top. Mamma Mia, molto buono! Have they enlarged the deli section in the Conad since we were in Scalea a couple of years ago?
@SuperSavvyTravelersLLC

Hi! YES! The star cookies! I love those! They have not enlarged it. It was always big. They have carved out a bit of space in the store and created the restaurant which is amazingly good. It is a wonderful place to shop.

Hi, Chris! Really respect and love the love and respect that Italians have for food! Fresh produce there is so much more tasty than is available in most US locations - I expect because the varieties grown are chosen for flavor and not their ability to stand up to long-distance shipping…. Also probably because they grow food in more natural ways and don’t allow the quantity and variety of heath-destroying chemicals to enter the food chain that the US does. Is there any place to buy ingredients to cook things like Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, etc. food? Thanks as always for fun and informative videos!! Abbracci dalla California del Nord costiera!

Hi Janet, Pretty much everything is organic here. There is the fruit and vegetable market every weekday in Scalea and the prices are lower than the supermarket. In addition there are always several big trucks along the streets selling fresh produce. It is so easy to find quality, fresh and unadulterated produce here. We are so lucky!
