It's pretty clear that not all Review channels are using this declaration in the way KZfaq intends. But this is how I use it on MY videos...

Thanks so much for your wisdom on this matter! Helped me tremendously. I have a small channel and have done a few reviews (one coming out August 16th) for LEVN and Dytole. I immediately went and checked that box in youtube studio. I heretofore had been unclear that "free product" WAS considered "paid promotion" as it is something of value. You are right about other channels not providing this disclaimer in their videos. I saw a review for a small power station from EBL that was just recently posted. There was no mention during the video whether or not it was a paid promotion. Without a disclaimer, the viewer is left to wonder if the review was just a sales pitch or an honest review.

I suspect the reason some creators who promote products don't use this feature is that some viewers are instantly turned off by the banner and just click away. Some viewers see these as "WARNING - SPAM or SCAM AHEAD" because some have been trained to think that way now. They want to buy a car, but they don't want a car sales person to approach them because they're sure they'll get a bad deal. I've noticed the "promotional effect" on my channel even before using the paid promotion banner. My channel acts as a portfolio that promotes my services as a media creator / video editor. Many of the videos double as product promo of stock footage and music I affiliate market. Once I started indicating that the video was promotional in the video title, my affiliate revenue instantly declined despite nothing changing in the videos. The titles probably scared people away who might have otherwise clicked the affiliate links had they watched the video. That was before adding the paid promotion banner. Now that I use the banner, I'll have to change my video titles so they do not "telegraph" the video as being promotional and hope that the paid promo banner at least allows them to get to the video without being turned off before they even watch it. Otherwise, not only will I not be getting the affiliate revenue, my services will also get less promotion.

THANK YOU! This is a huge problem. KZfaq's terms of service state that free products ARE paid promotion and have to be declared as such by clicking the button you mentioned.

This is a grey area. I get emails from companies offering products for review. Recently I've signed up for affiliate links to which I get a small cut in sales. They do not pay me to make the video therefore I don't use the paid promotion tab. I'm still at a loss of what to do about this.

From my perspective, it seems pretty black & white... if you get the product for free, that's technically "anything of value" (even if to the content creator its only real value is for the content and not having the product itself)...so I check the box. But yeah, I do think affiliate commissions and ad revenue fall under a different category since that is income your video is generating. But as I said, I check the box whenever the product is sent to me for free because I don't want people think I'm trying to hide that fact.

Great video and explanation. Do you think there perhaps is an exception that is being taken by some other creators based on the idea that they didn't explicitly receive "anything of value TO MAKE THE VIDEO..?"

I'm sure some will interpret the rule in whatever way they feel they can rationalize to their advantage, but the spirit of the rule seems clear enough to me. There are a couple of channels I've seen recently that I KNOW recieved an expensive product for free, and not only did they not disclose that (or check the promo box), but went so far as to solicit Patreon subs "to enable me to continue to review products like this"....actually implying that they use the Patreon income to acquire those products when I know for a fact that is not the case. Pretty shady ethics if you ask me.

If my channel has sponsors that do pay me, but they don’t pay me to make any particular video. All the videos I make I would make whether they are a sponsor or not. Would this call for checking that box? Basically, we go live every week. We will continue to go live with or without sponsors. But we do have sponsors that pay to have their information including in our description and imaging, but they don’t ever care what kind of content we make. We don’t make any content for them or their products.

Seems like you could easily argue the case against checking the box under those circumstances. I'm definitely nott in a position to provide definitive guidance for you on this topic, but personally, I'd probably not check the box in this case.

When you start uploading a video, at the bottom of the first page there is a link to 'Show More'. When you click that, it will allow you to make additional configurations to your video upload, including the option to select Paid Promotion or not.

Agreed. I don't think an affiliate link qualifies as a paid promotion..but per the rules, you do have to disclose (where it's easy to see) that the links are affiliate links.

Thanks for the explanation! When I upload a short there is a question "Does this video include paid promotion?" with two Yes/No checkboxes which are both unticked by default. So I wonder if there is a difference between checking the "No" checkbox vs not checking either...

Yeah, my interpretation/understanding is that all you're required to do by KZfaq/FTC rules in that case is put a little statement in the description that you're using affiliate links. I typically use the following: As an Amazon Associate I may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases when you use the link(s) above. This helps the channel WITHOUT any impact to the price you pay through Amazon. We appreciate your support! :)

Yep @ anything of value. So the free device is a payment so to speak. I give away PPS from time to time and I have mentioned to my viewers that I'm giving away my compensation.

Well, certainly there's always a chance that KZfaq will eventually take some action. However, from what I've seen so far, KZfaq has elected not to actively enforce the rule, given so many clear cases where content creators are obviously not complying. Personally, I'm not comfortable ignoring it since this could change at any time without warning and I want to ensure that I'm completely upfront with my viewers.

Yes - the guidelines state that when using commissioned links, you need to include a statement to that effect that is easily viewable in proximity to the links. This of course is different than "Paid Promotion" and so they don't always both need to be shown, depending on your specific circumstances.

I am PreMonetized on youtube Yet I see i can check box "Paid Promotions" so ?!? I am at 14 hours watch time, mostly shorts and have 19 subs so? Should i wait ? or can I put in promo's... Thx, gr8 video btw : )
