What does it cost to live in Turkey?
In this episode we explain what it costs to live in Turkey using the current exchange rates (note: exchange rates are always subject to change).
With more and more people considering moving to Turkey (on a permanently or temporary basis), we thought we would show you what the estimated costs of living are!
This episode gives you an insight into supermarket shopping, utility bills, health care, internet, house rental and vehicles.
The monthly minimum wage in Turkey is approximately £250/$350 which is 2,826 Turkish lira, which makes the cost of living incredibly expensive if your only source of income is Turkish lira at the moment!!

I currently live in Portugal...There is affordable and quality organic fruit and vegetables throughout the country in traditional farmer's markets...Supporting the local economy and not big brand box store's goes a long ways...Turkey is full of some the best spices, fruits and vegetables and etc. on the planet...Shop Local and you will save a ton of cash! Hi Dickie. Portugal is where I have an interest. I was born in Glasgow, but live in Australia. If I was able to leave or travel to Europe, I would lose my pension, which appears to cover living in Turkey. But there are many other issues than costs. Human rights is one, and Australia is terrible for people who can't drive in my rural region. What UK had, as the Beeching cuts to rail, it is positively evil what is going on in my area. It could be for coal seam gas under the railway track. The state and federal government are offering over $100Million for four local councils to rip up the railway tracks for cycling paths that elite business folk and retired councillors wish to use. All major parties [yes, even Labor] support oil and road related corporations. I moved into this rural region for less stress and for public transport in 1989, but from 1990, they have stealthily sabotaged the region's chance to move back into the 20th century. 24% have disabilities, most people I know have mental illness, and the youth are leaving. Australia has grown into a very corrupt place, but 52% of NSW call themselves 'middle class' and have no idea of the problems the other half have. Yes, we get great pensions, if we own our homes. But in small rural towns, with the mental health problems, it is terribly difficult to get builders or trades people, who often rip us off. A builder was supposed to build me a studio last winter [July], but just didn't bother to say he changed his mind, as covid has brought many out into country areas. We are very socially isolated here. Some buy here then resell in six months when they find out how backward towards a third world country we are going - if we can't get about anywhere without driving. My health is making this place incredibly difficult.

@@alaindubois1505 Greetings from Ponte de Lima, Portugal...I have friends in Australia and yes one of the Major thing's brought up is affordable housing...I've met folks from all over and walks of life who went to Australia because of the pay...I'm confused how you would lose your pension by moving abroad?...There are many folk's from all-over the world living in Portugal on pensions, investments and etc...Every country has pros and con's...I'm originally from the U.S. and have lived and worked in many countries around the World...Here in Portugal the communities have turned old railway lines, called Ecopistas into beautiful hiking and biking trail's to benefit everyone, and there simply amazing! The World right now is not in harmony not only in Nature, but with human being's...The Energy put forth is the Energy returned...Not all but some, including Governments and etc...Do not have good energy and they are not doing what is best for the planet and it's inhabitants...In a nutshell it's not sustainable...You are in control of you're happiness and Wellbeing, period...Get Busy Living...Blessings and Positive Energy from Portugal...🇵🇹🤙✌🤘😉

As a retired Brit living in Turkey, with my own home and a modest pension income, I must agree with the question - How does the average Turk survive on about 3,500 lira per month? Most working Turks rent their homes, have children, electricity, water, food bills and Mobile phones. I doubt I could live on that but so many do. Most of their shopping is done at the local bazars and diet seems to consist mainly of bread, fruit and veg, since meat, as you mention, is relatively expensive. I have never attempted to quantify my monthly expenses, but enjoying a tipple, cigarettes, and being a car owner, I am sure it is well in excess of the average turkish income. This has been compounded in the last couple of years by the lack of work opportunities related to the drop in tourism due to Covid. It hurts to see so many struggling.

Touristic countries are all like that. 🇹🇷, 🇨🇺, 🇻🇳, 🇬🇷 all of themhave financial issues.TR and GR could get along like how W. Europeans and N./S. Americans do but if you read their history book which are sold to young students to inscribe in their minds,you can understand why they want to ⚔️ eachother to death.

I live in İzmir, Most of Turkish people prefer beans , lentils and veggies for daily food, they avoid eating out, they prefer buying dairy products, cheese and olive oil from the villages of relatives or friends' relatives they might know, which are way cheaper than market prices. That helps to cut down the expenses.

@@mickandtrudie my dad lives in Turkey now after working 45 years in Denmark. Now he's enjoying the sun in Turkey. I too moved to Turkey, from Denmark recently. I lived all my life in denmark and i wanted a change in my life. I earn approximately 9500 liras a month.

Ataturk - founder of Turkish Republic- has gave these rights to women in 1934. Other countries : France : 1944 // Italy : 1945 // Belgium : 1960 // Switzerland : 1971 > in 1960s in England, women activists protest their goverment with this banner : "Are British women worth less than Turkish women?" (England was paying women %23 less salary than men, Turkey was paying equal with men)

Prices still seem in line with when my wife and i used to visit Turkey every year in the late 90s. My one lasting memory on costs was in the restaurants all the "tourist" restaurants were nice, and at the time about £10 a head. We then found a "local" restaurant which was down a backstreet in what seemed to be someone's front garden, just Formica tables, full of local people eating. You just got the set menu, no choice but varied from day to day. It was by far the best food we found and even with drinks was only a couple of quid each. We always just left £10 for the two of us each visit, the owners loved us and kept trying to give us money back but i always said its the best food we could find please spend it on your grandkids as that would make us happy. Lovely country and lovely people TY for the videos and memories :)

For tourists prices are most probably the same because of the rate of exchange. However if you are local and earn Turkish Lira, oh man good luck..

@@mickandtrudie Bahsettikleri yer muhtemelen bir ''esnaf lokantası'' diye tahmin ediyorum. Her ilde, her ilçede kısacası ülkenin her yerinde esnaf lokantası vardır. Çoğu restoranın aksine buralarda yerel halkın ''ev yemeği'' dediği türde yiyecekler bulunur. Biz buna ''sulu yemek'' veya ''anne yemeği'' de deriz. Eğer çok esnaf lokantası gezerseniz en güzel ev yemeklerini, çorbaları ve benzeri yiyecekleri bulabilir, yiyebilirsiniz. Tabii ki her esnaf lokantası aynı kalitede değildir. Bazıları çok güzelken bazıları o kadar iyi olmayabilir. Şu an durumlardan dolayı çoğu yer ya paket servisle çalışıyor ya da kapalı. Eğer açık bir esnaf lokantası bulursanız gitmenizi tavsiye ederim. Çoğu restoranın menüsünde yer almayan leziz yemekleri yiyebilirsiniz.

I am from Singapore and was blessed to have visited Turkey before covid struck. I will definitely want to live there for half a year every year when I retire. Singapore is just too expensive.

Kiyosaki as my late husband would say have achieved an incredible feat in the stock market. He turned thousands to billions, and have made a lot of people wealthy in the process. I really saw the potential of the stock market by reading Berkshire's annual letters. I recently sold my $674k apartment in the Bel Air area and I'm hoping to throw it into the stock market. I just don't want to lose everything.....

21 yaşındayım iş miş yok. Beğensem de yok beğenmesem de yok. Kocaeli gibi bir ilde hiç yok. Eskiden kafelerde garsonluk yapar paramızı çıkartırdık. Şimdi COVID diye diye ya kepenk kapattılar ya da işçi almayı durdurdular. Onlar ne yapsın? Fakat biz ne yapalım? Tek bulabildiğim iş Dilko'da eğitim vermek. Memur gibi gidip geleceğim, aylık 1000₺ gibi bir fiyata tekabül eden bir ödeme alacağım. Sonra "yükselecekmişim." Buranın boş pozisyonlarını hep arkadaşlarım boşalttı. Hiçbiri yükselemedi. İl boyunca dil okullarını gezip işten çıkarılana kadar 1000₺ gibi bir ücret almaya razı oluyorlar, hem de rezil şartlar altında. Bitti, bu ülke, bu insanlar, her şey bitti

Birincisi, Avrupalı insan, bizde hala mevcut olan yazdan kışlık hazırlaması, yiyeceklerini alırken öğünlük değil, haftalık, aylık olanları tedarik etme geleneği var. Şehirlerde yaşayanların çoğu köy ve kadaba geçmiş var, gidip oralardan tedarik ediyorlar dı, Tabi son yetişen nesil bağları iyice kopardı, internet oyun başından kalkıp ziyarete gidemiyorlar. BU büyük fark yapıyor, hatta yiyecek ve iceceklerde yarı yarıya fiyat farkı. Ben bizim Türk usulü yeme usulü, hazırlık ve ağız tadından taraftarıyım. Hele ki, Fasulye, mercimek ... gibi baklagiller, sebze yemekleri, SADECE MEVSİMSEL yetişmiş meyvaları yeme, ASLA ziptirik renkli içecekleri eve getirme taraftarıyım. Deniz kıyısı elbette daha pahalı, sosyal hayat, ayda restorant ziyaretleri, araba kiralamalar... bu kadar avro tutmuş..., hoppp onlar bu kadar kendi ülkelerinde bile yapmıyorlar. Evet gerçekten 3500 tl ile geçinmek zor, İngiltere ve avrupanın BAZI sayılı ülkeleri zenginlerler, hem ürettiklerini MARKALAŞTIRABİLİYORLAR hem her yere girebiliyorlar. Biz yapamıyoruz, çünkü oranın halkı izin vermiyor, karın kaymağını sana yedirmiyorlar, Eski sömürgeci ilişkileri, örneğin, Afrika, Güne amerika... Mısırda olduğu gibi diktatörleri yine başa getirerek, Suriyede entrikalarla oraları sömürüyorlar, ZENGİNLİKLERİNİ alıp götürüyorlar. Onların bu zenginliği sadece çalışmadan gelmiyor!!! Dediğiniz kilolu ve sağlıksız yaşam alışkanlıkları her yaşta var. Kısacık bir araştırmadan sonra elde ettiğim bilgiye göre, 1990-2000 arasında doğan "milenyum nesili" de beden kitle endeksi en dengeli nesil. Bu verilerin sizin dediklerinizle alakası bile yok. Global olarak yaşam şartları iyileşiyor ve dediğiniz şeyler, resmen globalleşmeye karşı kafa tutmak. Peki neden bu 30-40 yaşındaki abilerin göbekleri kendilerinden önde gidiyor? Gençler günlerinde en az 1 saatini spor salonunda harcarken bu adamlar ne yaptı? Şimdi kendi lafını yutup diyecek misin ki "o zamanlar spor salonu yoktu"? Sorunun cevabını ilk başta verip, yanlış çıkarımdan ilerlemişsiniz. Türkiye'de ağır bir yemek kültürü var. Her şey yemek üzerine kurulu. Sizin saydığınız yiyecekler nereden gelirse gelsin, dengeli tüketilmediği takdirde sorun yaratacaktır. Çünkü siz o yiyeceklerle bir yerden makro besinleri keserken, farklı bir makro besini gereğinden fazla tüketmiş oluyorsunuz. Karbonhidrat çok alırsanız hızlı kilo alırsınız, fakat kesip protein ve yağ almaya başlarsanız sonuç yine aynı olacaktır. Dengeli tüketim anahtar kelime. Bunun üstüne Türkiye'de bir spor kültürü yok. Hayır, stadyumlara çıkıp anıra anıra taraftarlık yapmak spor alışkanlığı değildir. Bizim insanlarımıza spor ve kişisel bakım aşılanmadığı için, diğer ülkelere kıyasla çok daha az hareket ediyoruz. Yürüyüş, koşu gibi alışkanlıklar, aktif faaliyetler hak getire. Dediğinize ek olarak, bizde şu kafa vardır: Akşama kadar ağır işte çalıştım, yemek yiyip yatmak benim hakkımdır. İt is not comparable! he makes video in Fethiye, Dalaman where are total touristic area. He shows living standart and prices in England from Regend Street in London, where the man earns his money in Reading. Does it express the relations correctly?

@@bilenbir2686 even in konya house rental prices have gone up to 2.000-2.500 for a 2+1 house, you are correct, it does not show the situation correctly, it is a lot worse now than it was when the video was made.

I’ve been living in Turkey for the past 3 months. My husband bought an apartment here since he’s working remotely and we absolutely enjoy our life here. Things are way cheaper than Germany, and we are able to have a good social life without emptying our wallets out 😊

As a soldier, I had a deployment to Turkey in the 80s, it was alot different then. In the rural villages the US dollar would get you a ridiculous amount of stuff. I traded a $1 bill for a ridiculously large bag of pistachios and at the grand bazaar in Istanbul, I traded an army field jacket for 2 leather jackets. I also bought a handmade marble chess set and persian carpet super cheap. Great times🙂👍

I would recommend that you spend some time near Fethiye to get the experience and feeling of how living there would be. There is one particular town which might suit your expectations. Its name is Sarıgerme and it is actually a village which is located in a perfect spot, about 15 km to Dalaman airport, 20 km to Göcek, 37 km to Köyceğiz, very close to the Turtle Beach, 56 km to Fethiye, 67 km to Ölüdeniz (Blue Lagoon). Sarıgerme has got a blue flag beach. There are twin hotels that I can recommend and I always stay with my family during summer time : Otel Sevgi. The owner's name is : İbrahim Merze and his cellular # is : +90(533)711-6158. The hotel does not have any stars, is not luxurious, it is just bed and breakfast. It is extremely clean and well-maintained and the breakfast is suberb.

This is anecdotal but someone I know who lives in Turkey wasn't able to stay at a hotel because she hadn't received the vaccine yet. I was hoping to pay Fethiye a visit in September but that didn't work out. My next target is late October. If I end up going we should meet up there and talk about how much better or worse it is than America or Australia lol

When we lived in Fethiye we never shopped in Migros because of the extortionate prices. We went to Bim, Sok and A101 which sold good quality basic products and beef mince and chicken was a good price. For fish we went to the fish market and the Friday pazar for our fruit, veg, olive oil and cheese. Going to the pazar helps you learn Turkish and you get to know the lovely people selling their amazing fresh produce. Then with all the cash you saved not going to Migros, you can have gozleme and Ayran at the pazar. 😋😁👍

actually the last time I was in Fethiye we visited this particular Migros and was appalled that the prices are different to other Migros's, so we walked out. Our weekly shop here in Antalya doesnt cost anywhere near what it costs in the Migros in Fethiye.

Things have increased a lot since we had our house and lived in Dalyan. We always hired a car it worked out fine for the traveling we did. Local Market shopping is definitely the best way to shop. It's true that Turkey's expensive if you have to live with the Turkish minimum wage, but we have a proverb in Turkish "bülbülü altın kafese koymuşlar, ah vatanım demiş" which translates to "they put the nightingale in a golden cage and it still cried out for it's forest". There's nowhere on earth that I'd rather be.

I loved how you talked about our economic situation. People who came from European countries mostly think that Turkey is cheap, well they have a point actually. But I think everyone needs to know that Turkey is in a very big economic crisis right now. Lots of people are committing suicide everyday because of that. I have minimum wage in the netherlands, for 30 years now, i need that for rent, food, gas, light, ensurances. Nothing left, no holiday, no clothes, no eating out, no car, nothing. Just a few get out of it. Netherlands look rich but arent.

You can at least save a little and have lovely holiday in some of the - not-first-world countries like Turkey. 800 euros would make you a king here for a week. You should consider. Besides, I remember running into a Dutch gay couple in Barcelona in 2015. They told me they're on unemployment salary and traveling the world :( I believe you're luckier than us Turks :)

Really good video - well explained. I especially liked your observation of the kilo price when in the supermarket. So many people look at the headline price on the sticker (which is exactly what the supermarkets want you to notice). Thanks for this useful info on living expenses in Turkey. £1000 a month is reasonably cheap. I am paying €1000 rent/month in Munich for just a studio flat!... Winters in Fethiye are cold and wet! The houses are very very cold and when there are storms the power is out and often water off too. Can be quite miserable for 2 to 3 months

Look up the winter weather in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada and you will see that cold and miserable is relative. Ha-ha. 😉 This year we had seven months of below freezing (sometimes up to minus 30 degrees Celsius), snow and ice. So, 15 to 20 degrees in Fethiye is pleasantly balmy for most Canadians. And I just want to be in Turkey and integrate myself into its culture. I’m not much of a beach person. But thanks for your input.

Yes but you have central heating, wood burning stoves. Nothing like that in most of Fethiye. Tiled floors and no insulation in the walls!

Incredibly educational and very accurate assessment. As an added example I can give another monthly cost to be around £1300 per month with added car and frequent social outings for a 1 +1 apartment in a nice part of Ankara. It really is mind boggling how most families support themselves.

Prices in different regions are quite different, for example prices in Fethiye are quite high as it is a touristic region while here in Adana everything is much cheaper. And we also cut everything such as we use 7 pound internet which is 25 mbit both reasonably fast and cheap. So with minimum wage a single person could easily live but as a family of 4 etc people it really becomes troublesome...

I haven’t been to Turkey in about 6 years as my parents had a home in Bitez near Bodrum & they stayed 3 months at a time & it cost them a lot more to live even with owning house & car. Markets are the best places for food & bargains Migros has always been a expensive shop. And when the government suddenly added a huge tax on alcohol late 90s/2000 it hurt a lot of business
