Our 11 year old non verbal autistic grandson often uses his iPad listening to the same 5 second clip over and over again…..is that stimming? I’d be glad of your advice

That can be stimming. What are the words being said in the 5 second clip?

@@navigatingawetism - sometimes it can be just a noise … l can’t tell you the words as he eventually changes the clip … but certainly even if l change the video to something else he can negotiate his way back to his original video and the exact spot that he is fascinated by…… my worry is the psychological and physical impact this is having on his brain…. Is it his way of absenting himself from a world he cannot operate in?? He is severely autistic with cerebral visual impairment and motor control impairment and little self awareness or danger…. But a loving and gentle natured boy…. Thank you so much for your interest in responding to my query- that’s so very kind.

He's very smart - he can navigate back to the video and spot that he was interested in @@bobwishart8780 Sometimes kids who have difficulty communicate will use repetitive video playing to communicate. Other times it's an interest that you can start to connect with. How surprised would he be if you started playing his favorite spot on the video all on your own? There's lots of opportunity to connect and create a bond - that is how you can counter your worry about this repetition. Create a bond with it and then use that to go deeper. 🙂

@@navigatingawetism this is so very kind of you to respond to my concerns. Ben uses a letterboard to communicate but only with help …he needs his elbow to be held to enable him to point….. it’s very much hit and miss but every time we get a spontaneous answer it’s such an encouragement to us. Re the iPad … l sometimes let him have two devices at the one time as he seems to find this stimulating!….its fascinating to see him negotiating the two devices to get the clip he wants synchronised. But Bens disabilities are still very significant requiring him to be supervised all the time for his own safety…..l would so love to see some sort of breakthrough.
