I once gave a presentation at the department of finance in Quebec city. Most economists were in business casual clothing, except one who was wesring a fantastic suit. I assumed he was in charge of the place until I learned later he just enjoys wearing suits. He told me he always wanted a job where he'd go in wearing a suit every day, so even if he could dress down a bit there most of the time, he just decided he'd be wearing a suit and tie every day. He dressed slightly more formally than his peers and it seriously affected how he was perceived -- it works.

I've had similar situations by dressing one level up from everyone else. You do naturally seem in charge even more than usual.

@@nutyyyy Definitely. Also, a suit tends to have some structure to it and it affects how you behave. Some people describe it as an armor with good reason.

Living here in Japan means that wearing a suit for professional attire is commonplace for all workplaces. This means that you can really dress up in dapper attire and it's not so out of place! I wore a light blue and white striped seersucker suit to work yesterday, since it was 33 degrees celsius and not only was it appropriate but I also got many a compliment! I wish we could normalise looking professional for all workplace attires, after all it is fun to dress up and who likes to be bored at work

I’m a professional engineer. At my office, jeans and polo shirts are the norm. I typically take it up a notch by tucking in a button-down patterned shirt with dark jeans or chinos. I’m usually the best dressed person around, but not so much that it distracts or seems out of place. I think it’s a good balance.

I actually find it interesting how in the workplace nowadays it is almost a negative connotation to dress up, like there is a competition to dress as casually as possible. I work as a software engineer, and I work at a company that prides itself on a casual workplace. I do very much enjoy my workplace, but I actually received pushback when I would show up to work wearing my suits and even my sweater with a tie on... though now they lay off.

Someone has to either set the standard or be the standard because others don’t know what it is. Someone has to step forward and be that person. So might as well step forward and show them how to dress professionally.

I have worked as a young man in employment where I would be under houses or in barns, basements etc. I usually wore green or brown matching work clothes. Similar to a UPS driver, If I knew I would get dirty I had a similar set of coveralls to protect my clothes. My co-workers often wore old jeans and t-shirts. While I worked there I was promoted to team leader then foreman. Then I found work in suits and ties in new places.

At 4:15 I disagree with dressing like everyone else to fit in. At my office people (from the intern to occasionally the owner) show up in shorts and a t shirt. I however would never show up in less than a polo or button up shirt because that's MY standard. In no way should we lower our personal standards because "that's what everyone else does"

As a professional cook, black from head to toe is my go to look. But, if I'm going for an interview; I'm in a bow tie, French Connection-UK Corduroy waistcoat, Ash Samtani -Hong Kong- French cuffed shirt, and some style of dark trousers. The waistcoat was thrifted, and the shirts came from my paternal grandfather more than 20 years ago.

I work at a jewelry store. Mostly I prefer to use my suits and shirts, and overall my boss and saleswomen compliment on it. Because I was more used to other jobs, I used normal shirts, way too casual, with jeans and sneakers. Now, everyone that goes through the store stops to look and compliment me.

My company is very ‘casual’ but I do like to look a little smarter. Certainly a smart/smart casual shirt but no tie or jacket. I am very much a polo wearer on a weekend, but I feel more confident at the office when I am dressed a little smarter

Spot-on video as always, chaps! Nothing looks more unprofessional than someone wearing a crumpled suit, scuffed shoes, stained tie and obviously unpressed shirt. Also, it is perfectly possible to look professional while casually dressed, so long as you don't look like Shaggy from Scooby Doo or The Dude from The Big Lebowski (sorry, Jeff!). I gave up dressing casually for the office when someone asked me whether my polo shirt and chinos outfit signified I was playing golf after work!

Great narration with a dash of humor. I worked in a aerospace research lab for 30 years, my dress was clean dark name brand jeans, low top non-skid safety shoes "with a hiking boot look" and a plaid over a clean colored T-shirt for cold weather and a clean thick "not cheap" T-Shirt for summer. It was the best job i ever had. Thanks for your time and effort.

I'm a software developer and when I feel like going the extra mile I go for a simple light coloured shirt and a contrasting tie. The tie alone makes me stands out because in my industry no one wears them. When it's cold I top it off with a business casual sweater. A jacket or full suit wouldn't work, it's just too far removed from the work culture and would be considered way over the top.

At my office, the minimum standard is what you might call smart casual. Men wear anything from chinos, business shirt and sweater to chinos and a polo shirt. Because I enjoy dressing well, I take it up a notch: I wear business pants, a business shirt and a non-matching business jacket. People take me seriously - it works.

Dressing professionally depends on the profession; however, there are broad themes. Clothing should fit well, accessories should be minimal or be functional for the tasks, the individual should be well groomed and clean (if possible, as working on plumbing under houses means you’re not gonna be clean by the end of the day, but you should at least start that way), and you should avoid anything potentially offensive such as crude/lewd graphic tees (unless you work at Spencers), overbearing cologne (was waiting for a client who had court and one of the guys awaiting his appearance cologne could be smelled from 15 feet away (literally), in my line of work this means business, business casual (emphasis on casual) to nice casual wear (jeans with a polo or nice shorts with a short sleeve button is acceptable for instance). Since I work with kids and low income families it can come across as pretentious to dress too high up the formality scale, and since they typically have regular court involvement you don’t want to look like another “suit” trying to tell them what to do. Hence the allotment for more casual wear despite being in a professional role. The key is to look competent and capable so that you gain trust and respect, in my field that means being well dress, but not overdressed, in other fields it means being much higher up the formality scale.

Gentlemen: As a MONTHLY frequent cruiser on CELEBRITY CRUISE LINE, I'd appreciate you sending the message to DRESS UP when cruising on upscale lines. It's appalling to see men show up for dinner in jeans and untucked shirts. This frequent cruiser wears a jacket AND a tie nightly for dinner and brings both is tux plus a dinner jacket for 'Chic Nights' (two on a seven day cruise). Amazingly, I receive many compliments and most come from the CREW and SENIOR OFFICERS who can only wish that guests would up their game when it comes to dressing for dinner. I'm suggesting this for your consideration in hopes you'll spread the word. Cheers! Mac

I work in a beef plant. I am the Technical Services Supervisor (Quality Assurance) and I like to dress well. My peers dress casual on a daily basis. Hoodies, western style button-ups, T-shirts under jackets, golf shirts, polo shirts and Sweatshirts is the norm. I tend to wear dress shirts with ties under jackets, vintage style vests with shirt and tie and newsboy caps. I wear a pocket watch on a double Albert chain. Think modern "Peaky Blinders".This is abnormal in my workplace yet I feel as though I owe it to myself to convey my own tastes in style. Is there a compromise that I can make without feeling as though I am being untrue to my tastes?

Stylish people I need your help with 2 questions: 1) Are 800 Euros (Greece) enough for a very good 2 piece bespoke suit? 2) Should I get a navy blue suit,a navy blue double breasted three piece suit (the vest is charged additionally) or a charcoal three piece suit?
@SpamMouse
@SpamMouse Жыл бұрын
The answer will depend on where you are in your clothing journey. Unless those people you work alongside are wearing a waist-coat (vest) or you are working in a cold location I would avoid getting a waist-coat this time round. There will always be a supplier that can spend your budget on providing a bespoke suit, the balance to achieve is the quality of the material/cloth vs the quality of the tailoring. Will the supplier really measure, cut and sew or just measure and use an on-line custom supplier? So consider doing that yourself, you will get a better material and then allow part of your budget to get final bespoke alterations. Colour choice: Which option works best with your skin tone and your shirts/ties. FTW. 👍

You see, this is the problem I have. I work for a modern, progressive company; The managers (let alone staff) wear tracksuits, t shirts and shorts with trainers, I have even seen one senior member of staff wearing what I would consider pj bottoms and socks with sliders to the office. I understand it's normal for the youth (I'm 26 so hardly old or out of touch) but I cannot fathom how one would wear this outside their home, let alone to work. I have no idea how I'm supposed to dress, I usually go with a jumper and jeans or something, but with my polish boots (most informal shoes I have) and the fact I'm wearing a sweater not a hoodie, I still stand out as too formal, it's a nightmare. I'm thinking of just wearing my Oxfords, Chinos and a polo, I will be far more formal than everyone else but I somehow feel a polo is less formal than a jumper

I’ve been in the tech industry for nearly 30 years now, it’s changed wildly over the years, and is also dependent on segment. Manager at a federal bank vs manager at a software company: massive difference. Over those decades I’ve worked in many more casual software & tech companies, one thing people don’t realize… We IMMEDIATELY know when you’re interviewing somewhere else by the fact you wore a suit to work that day. Personally, I’m really tired of all of this, look deeper for how competent or capable someone is. I’ve worked with some absolutely brilliant people that had zero idea how to dress themselves, especially those on the spectrum.

I'm a photographer and my wife is an art teacher. So we fall into a different category. 😅 As for photography, it depends on what your shooting. Weddings, I've been going all black. Turtle neck, pants, shoes all black. To blend into the background. Also jacket and tie get in the way of the bags and straps. Studio sittings it's more casual. I'll have jeans, maybe pants. Henley shirt, and shoes. Never sneakers. A little artsy, though it's also been called euro trash. 😅 Sports, jeans or cargo pants, hiking boots, unless indoors, then shoes, but depends on weather, could be t shirt to a leather jacket, to keep warm.

💊 Looking professional has two meanings: looking like someone with a professional occupation and looking like someone who knows what they're doing. 💊 Dressing professionally means wearing clothes appropriate for work, ranging from smart casual to traditional business attire. 💊 It's important to dress according to the conventions of your profession and follow workplace norms. 💊 Dressing professionally shows commitment to your company and inspires confidence in others. 💊 Pay attention to every detail, including grooming, accessories, and the state of your business card. 💊 Looking professional is not limited to special occasions and should be maintained consistently. 💊 You can inject your personality into professional attire through accessories, colors, and patterns. 💊 Examples of professional outfits include casual ensembles with a dress shirt and dark jeans, business casual with a sport coat, and formal business attire with a suit. 💊 Wearing appropriate leather shoes enhances a professional look, while casual athletic shoes detract from it.
