The U.S. government has allocated billions of dollars to transition to a clean energy economy.
There’s just one problem: workers are being exploited and some even have to pay to be considered for these jobs.
For a real green transition, clean energy jobs have to be union jobs.

Unions, Unions, Unions. No Matter the country, if you want good working conditions and pay then you need strong unions. I really hope that our western world can get back to a place where unions are big and strong and we have institutions that crush cartels and hold companies that abuse their workers (wage theft, etc.) actually accountable. That's an integral part of reestablishing a middle class in western countries. And politicians that tell people that Unions are bad and that we should just unregulate and untax big companies are literally grooming you into slavery.

I'm surprised unions like the IBEW aren't all over this (The might already be they already have workers on on wind farms). There's already unions well entrenched in this sector. Shouldn't matter what form of power generation it is. There's no need to form a separate union when large ones already exist. It's a win win for both the workers and the admin at these union bodies.

You build houses from 7am to 7pm that you won't be able to afford. You're forced to work so fast that you do a poor job. Factory work? lol nope. Service industry? Nope, plus you gotta deal with Qarans. Yeah, unionization is helpful. Getting rid of the profit motive would help too. The good thing about this clean energy system is less permanent workers. In the old days, power plants required a large workforce of unionized workers who lived nearby. Was a career that provided for millions of people across the country. All got the best benefits, retirement, and work/life balance due to their ability to work a 9-5 normal job. Now what we have is wind turbines and solar farms that don’t require a lot of manpower to maintain. Instead, these employees often have to travel all over the country to setup fields of solar panels or do routine maintenance on wind turbines. The fact that these new technologies don’t require as much maintenance and manpower is a huge factor in the less than favorable career life. Even if they setup millions of acres of solar and millions of wind turbines, they just don’t need the same number of people to keep things running. Ultimately in my humble opinion, the energy workforce can be reduced significantly, maybe as much as 70%.

Honestly OSHA regulations state that there has to be at least 2 people in a plant at any time, it’s to dangerous for a single person to be alone with high voltage equipment and what ever type of power source you use to generate power. I was onboard for one of Floridas first turbine plants in Ruskin back in the 90’s. We had an almost 100 man crew at all times. Unless you’re working with a backup power generation system for a hospital or something, there should always be 2 people there.

You touch on a global topic which is affecting a lot of industries and workers everywhere. The biggest problem we need to solve if we are going to save humanity from environmental disaster, without causing economic disaster and mass starvation. Almost everything needed for the low emissions "green" transition in the long run also cuts jobs. Example: obstructionists whine about the materials needed for "green" tech, but in reality that "green" tech takes a lot less of those materials than the fuel based tech it is replacing. As the transition happens it will mean a lot less extraction and a lot less processing compared to fuel/petroleum. Also: - a lot less cargo transportation not shipping fuel around the planet - general pressure to reduce consumption of everything. - the efficiency of grid electricity vs physically distributing fuels - automation - shared as a service items like cars instead of individual ownership - reduced role of military All of these "green" things we need to do will reduce the need for labor, all at the same time. Meaning a lot less middle class paying jobs. The solutions I see to prevent mass unemployment: 1. Lean into the service and entertainment economy 2. Generally increase the perceived value of labor. Return to the days where any full time job pays enough for a moderate household with benefits to cover periods of bad luck. Go back to single income household (sure some families can work a second income for bonus money but not needed to live). Make single income households, stay at home parents, retiring early a thing people can actually afford to do again. Wanna "make America great again" then remember when it was great enough that someone working full time in a retail store, factory or restaurant could support a family. Remember back when the executive only make 10x the starting wage not 500x. The reduction is going to happen if we do it on purpose or nature forces us there. Either way the only way we can avoid mass unemployment and starvation is by increasing the value of labor to adjust for all the lost jobs from our new found efficiency.

Interesting. I am a resident of South Dakota and am aware of where Wasta is. Middle of nowhere where any power produced will have to be transported a long way with plenty of line losses. This state loves big business but if I wanted to put up solar panels on my house or a wind turbine in my backyard there is no way it would pay. I would be paid far less for my production than these big "farms" are paid. The most sensible way to switch to alternate energy would be to encourage making the power where it is needed. Instead our government only works for the deepest pockets.

More good jobs not bad ones? Seems like we’re already forcing the creation of more jobs just so people aren’t idle. Instead of creating more “good” busy work for people why not craft a society where YOU DONT HAVE TO WORK TO SURVIVE so that companies actually have to compete for employees. Right now it’s work this shitty job or die, imagine if they actually had to convince you to work for them. We already live in a world of overproduction and overconsumption. It’s the biggest driver of climate change. Seems like it would be more ‘productive’ to reduce how much we produce and consume, which has the added benefit of reducing the amount we have to work, instead of this more more more mentality we’re all stuck on.

WTF!! Why we not spending tons of money on nuclear fission?? Seriously, it's SO MUCH BETTER NOW!! I'm so sick of inefficient renewalables! And on top of the inefficiency, the mining of materials to make solar panels is HORRIBLE for the environment. The processing of said material is also horrible. Then add in that panels have a life span of 20 years.... And panels are NOT recycled at the end life. (companies are working on ways to do it but, they are more expensive than just make new ones.) Renewables ARE HORRIBLE long term investments. Germany recently figured that out and backed out of shutting down all of their nuclear plants and switching to renewables. Come on people. It takes 10 mins to research how safe nuclear fission is now. Start demanding an end to the "renewable" stupidity and investment in fission!

I was involved in developing a solar field. We stripped lush top soil just to take and dump in a landfill. Then took horrible clay to replace the top soil….(packed clay for access roads in the fields). Between the worthless clay soil and the concrete pylons, the land is worthless…..(Expensive to turn back). It’s horribly sad to see. Greedy Bastards in a boondoggle industry. Also, where is the question of landfill’s being Filled with solar panels in California? (Not recyclable)

I once worked in California, holy land of laws and lawyers as a wildfire manager. Lots of laws DO NOT automatically make things better. Not only was my pay barely better than what I got in NV and ID despite more responsibilities and higher cost of living in CA, I could barely do my job because of all the red tape. I even saw PG&E was cutting corners in the field in 2020 but to have my report taken seriously I had to get a lawyer. Unions are absolutely needed as well as laws that are made for the common people with TRANSPARENCY, not for the interests of big businesses.

Laws and lawsuits?? My brother in non-existent Christ! How do you go up against the richest people who own the people who write the laws? That's how they dominated us the last 40+ years! We workers can only fight back TOGETHER. When we unite, we can withhold our labor and then NOTHING gets done in the economy. Musk ain't gonna build his cars himself and Bezos definitely ain't gonna deliver his packages himself! They need us waaaaaaaaaay more than we need them! ✊️✊️✊️

@@truecatholic1 just to whom? The average citizen? Workers? Minorities? Companies? Lawmakers? "Just" is entirely subjective and is typically tied to the values of those in power (hence why Jim Crow Laws lasted for so long) My point with California wasn't only my pay was crap, it was that laws were making it harder to PROTECT PEOPLE FROM WILDFIRES. PG&E, the company I tried to report but couldn't because so many laws protected them, caused the Dixie fire (largest single CA wildfire) the following July! Yes, making laws to protect workers would do **some** good, but workers need power & STRONG representation first and foremost. Otherwise you end up with poorly done half measures like the solar workers in this video or outright dangers like the inability to systematically report on large company negligence like with PG&E

Oh yeah, and solar doesn't work because the problem is consumption, which people call growth. When you transform resources on the earth (a closed system) in production (a closed system) entropy goes up. Following a curve like that of a quadratic (a whachamacallit), the gains in efficiency renewables offer will be countered by the gain in consumption. It's happened before. The Bessemer process didn't equal less consumption. If a gain in efficiency offsets consumption in one area, its appetite is transferred elsewhere in the whackamole global buffet. Everything we do consumes. Doing consumes. It's the 2nd law. These people have "real problems", but in a surprisingly brief period of time real reality is likely to overcome these genuine concerns. I like the channel, but any meaningful resistance would be a lot more radical than bargaining with the criminals that run our lives. There won't be meaningful unions in the rare earth mines up river in the supply chain. All the same, unions are the best option. All these realistic compromises still deprive us of a future in the end.

@@Waitwhat469 Panels aren't really made anywhere else, though, and those that are made elsewhere are very expensive. Sometimes this channel frustrates me. "Good paying jobs" and "unions" only seem like consessions to capital. Capital still wins in the end. You're still tied to a job for survival, still obligated to sell yourself like a fk*ng product, still the property of the so-called "ruling class." This channel isn't what it seems. It is an apology for capital and the ruling class. It's a simulation of dissidence meant to pacify us into a sleepy acceptence. I don't want a union job. I don't want a job at all. I can take care of myself and my own. The government, and the corporations it represents, can get ****ed. I'd rather live in the stone age than be a freak on a leash.
