Politicians and corporate execs want to convince us that war creates jobs and economic stimulus for all. In reality, defense spending has become yet another way for wealth to transfer from the working class to the elites. And this one is getting people killed.

"Eisenhower was going to call this new animal the “military-industrial-congressional complex,” which most would agree today is a pretty accurate description of the system since it includes all the players. @@dominicfucinari1942same as today. If you draw the money out of industry the industry will collapse and it will have a ripple effect. As they fail to meet goals and lose the contracts they are forced to cut jobs which means unemployment, if they lose contracts they may not be able to pay the loans they take out which means going bankrupt which means even more people on the street, if they failed to pay their loans the lenders would have the same problem. And with every worker not working you have less people stimulating the economy which spreads the problem even to unrelated industries basically causing an economic crisis. One can look at quanta tive easing measures and how everytime the US fed tried to pull money out the market risked a crisis and they had to pump even more back in.

That Sarah Huckabee Sanders clip gets me "It will bring in 30 new jobs" the population of Arkansas is 3,060,000 30/3,060,000 or 1/102,000. That created a new job for every 1 in 102,000 citizens, those numbers are just so small its comical

I think a lot of people know at a gut level we're not creating more high-value, sustainable employment opportunities by fueling or creating conflict in the world. Our allies are beginning to see us as mercenaries, not fighting for humanity or justice. It's inevitable this will be uncovered and our weaknesses exploited. As you said, we've long neglected public goods like a working justice system, education, infrastructure and healthcare which is in part why the jobs that are created are so vulnerable to outsourcing. The U.S. has such weakened labor laws that it's becoming industry's sacrifice zone, but a lot of native-born U.S. members of the public simply don't know it because they've been fed the myth of U.S. exceptionalism and on average they don't have many opportunities to see other countries' policies in action. This is one key way the U.S. education system fails students. It simply doesn't teach them outside perspectives or how other countries organize and prioritize their domestic policy agendas. I think the domestic gains of the Baby Boomers are fading and there are now generations of U.S. citizens who have never known what it looks like to truly prioritize domestic policy.

It comes to me as no surprise that a stimulus in money to a company actually resulted in monopolistic acquisitions layoffs and stock buy backs. Its like the shareholders see the extra money coming in as a direct windfall to their bank accounts and always move to transfer that money to themselves before everything and everyone else. Ie embezzlement. Reverse stock buy backs, stop funneling money to monopolies and companies that transfer money away from their employees (by layoffs or low wages).

Broken window fallacy - destroying a window and paying to replace it doesn't stimulate the economy, it just wastes resources and society does not see a net benefit. Similarly, spending on military just to stimulate the economy doesn't provide benefit, it just increases the tax burden (the deadweight loss grows with the square of the tax rate), and thus people have less to spend.

Another thing to look at is just how bad our structure for government programs are. This is part of the reason why the DoD hires so much externally, because they cannot for the life of them manage training or smart hiring practices or keep a culture of talent internally, so it is consistently outsourced to contractors. This means the people making decisions are almost entirely at the mercy of contractors to think for them. It's not unique to the DoD either.

Korea ended in a draw, the VC held power in Vietnam, Iraq was a loss, Afghanistan was a loss. This is an important point for this piece because it delivers the message that the corporate oligarchs send our troops to die with complete disregard. Win or lose they still profit. From both sides. @@john2g1 I hate to be that guy, but that's definitely something someone can say from a position of ignorance of the status quo. One has to ask oneself the question, "Why are they so eager to go to fight over this 'nonsense'?". Because it is a wedge issue, its purpose is to divide and distract. The outcome of these culture wars is irrelevant to the ruling class. Why irrelevant? Because it doesn't harm their bottom line. For example, even if abortion laws are passed at the state wide level, rich people can just hop on a private jet and do it in another country, it's not a problem for them. So the focus is on the process, not the outcome. The process of distracting people for as long as possible to pit people against each other so while you're busy ripping each other throats they can keep stealing your shit in broad daylight. It's a distraction to maintain the status quo and both parties are interested in keeping the current system. The only differences are aesthetical. One party wants capitalism under the sauce of Christianity, the other wants capitalism wrapped in the rainbow flag, but at the end of the day they both want capitalism to remain in power.

America would have still lost lives and dollars in Vietnam, but also would be decades behind equality under Goldwater. As someone who is planning to work in defense after college, I agree with alot of what this video has to say. I noticed at an internship that the whole process of contractors and government interacting is a massive waste of time, money and effort. These companies only sell to the US government (except Boeing) so I don't see why they aren't just part of the government to save the tax payer money by having cheaper government employees VS. expensive CEOs. It would just streamline the whole R&D process. That said I do think that it's necessary to have a peace time defense work always innovating and producing weapons. Modern weapon systems are incredibly complex machines that require talented engineers and skilled technicians to make. It takes years if not decades to go from a new idea to an operational system and even more time to build enough of that thing to matter. And even then these systems expire after enough time and then need decommissioned and replaced. So permanent production is very necessary to ensure force readiness and capabilities. Again though with our current system of contractors so much money that could be R&D or larger production lines is just lost to shareholders and corporate management. On another note I do find your representation of our support to Ukraine to be in poor taste. I think the Dod supporting Ukraine is the only good thing they've done in my life and we aren't just sending them new supply of equipment, we are sending them stockpiled weapons. That's why the "billions of dollars" we are sending to Ukraine isn't making jobs because we aren't using money at all, we just send what we already built and the price tag on that is just how much that thing cost when it was bought.

Have you ever thought about how ridiculous that sentence is? You should read up on fiat currency, the federal reserve, etc. How does a government owe interest to itself? Our country would have collapsed decades ago if it owed interest on the "deficit". No they simply print more dollars and steal from the working class through inflation. They don't owe themselves money. They print the money.

Great video. Russia's invasion of Ukraine I think illuminates two things about military spending. There are some governments other than the US that will also use force to further their goals, so until someone comes up with a good plan to get rid of it, we need a military. The other thing that it illuminates is that a military is the best way to funnel money with little oversight or accountability. See, if the objective of giving aid to Ukraine was to help them retake their sovereign borders that would have been accomplished by now. The US could have provided F-16s, helicopter gunships, precision-guided artillery, drones, etc. The Ukrainian armed forced are very resourceful and adaptable. But that isn't the objective. Instead our main focus is on using up obsolete equipment that will then have to be replaced by purchasing the newest and most expensive stuff. It also provided a great testing ground for equipment and doctrine...like Israel's invasion of Gaza.

idk what to do really, i think it seems like people are not pissed off enough like we used to be during less politically stuck times, or those that are pissed off are so oppressed and poverty stricken that they have no influence. organizing is exhausting and doesn't really lead anywhere anyways because of citizens united, and most people near the poverty line are lulled into complicity by baseline levels of comfort and security so there's no engagement because the capitalist class has arranged just enough money for the people to keep them pacified. it's not like we can afford to "wait for gen z to fix everything". but power structures are SO different and so much more ingrained than they ever were in the past that methods that have worked historically are simply not feasible anymore. help?
