Victims of one episode of strangulation are 750% more likely of becoming a victim of homicide at the hands of the same partner than a woman who is assaulted but not strangled. In this webinar, Gael Strack of the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention will share insights and research on the intersection of non-fatal strangulation and domestic violence.

As a victim of strangulation in 2015 I will say there was absolutely no follow up for me, and I had marks on my neck. 9 years later I’m finally cutting the trauma bond and processing what’s happened. The system has failed us DV victims.

I’ve been strangled several times. I told my doctor and she couldn’t get me out of the room fast enough. She was so uncomfortable. I finally left my husband a month ago. My husband would cut the blood flow off by holding my neck so hard that it would leave bruises behind my ear. But then the last time he did it differently by holding one hand hard over my mouth and using his other hand to hold my nose closed! I couldn’t breathe at all. The other times I almost passed out and got really sick every time for weeks. No doctor cared. Probably have permanent brain damage now.

I noticed my abuser's eyes looked black when he had his hands around my throat and my feet off the ground. The worst part is invalidating those moments of his rage and the harm done. Created cognitive dissonance, made me feel crazy. My case worker and Advocate at DHS denied my request for housing support. My daughter and I became homeless, she knew that it would place us at risk of further harm. It took us 8 months to get a home. It took me self educating, learning the laws andmy rights to be able to fight back against their choices to deny us help

This happened to me while serving in the military and it was all swept under the rug. Maybe they have changed, but I doubt it. If I had to do over again I would report to the local police and not military police. I was pretty much made fun of by everyone. He was not punished and went on to strangle another female soldier and still walks free today. Insanity.

I was strangled about 4 years ago by my ex, but I never went to the doctor to get checked. I remember I barely could of breath. Then somehow I manage to escaped. But as I was running he pulled my throat and my scream distorted by the action. I remember my voice sounded as if I was sick since then. My throat was hurting, like a month or even more. I don’t know why I didn’t go to the doctor to get checked. I guess because my life in that moment was as if I was “living “ in a unreal world.

You're certainly not alone in not seeking medical attention. You may want to share this with your physician during your next check up - there may be lingering issues. You may also find this webinar about traumatic brain injury here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pZOZqqqBtJjHp2w.html TBIs can be caused by strangulation and can contribute to health issues long term.

You must leave. A church or shelter can help, use a different name and rent a room to be safe, share with someone, have a friend or buddy system with a phone always charged. Make a report with the shelter's help to the police, get their help, somehow make sure he knows they are involved. The hospital intakes victims even if after it happened, no matter how long after. Through emergency. The best would be to find sanctuary by living with your family to get out. Do not be alone. Call domestic violence hotline as often as you need, write everything down and share it with your closest person daily, hourly. Do not be alone.⚘️⚘️🌷🦋🕊
