Is Bad Boys II Michael Bay’s best-worst movie? Is it the most entertaining so-bad-its-good mainstream action movie ever made?
If the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing and expecting different results, then one could argue Michael Bay is downright certifiable. After all, who announces their directorial debut with a movie as bold and brash as Bad Boys and proceeds to repeat, nay, magnify the same screenwriting mistakes in the critically panned sequel Bad Boys II? Then again, does it even matter? Despite being released eight years after the original, Bad Boys II may have been eviscerated by critics but proved to be bulletproof among the moviegoing masses. Instead of taking precise measures to tighten the story and bolster the witty banter between Miami Narcotics officers Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, Bay doubled down on the explosive action set-pieces and visceral chase sequences. The bet paid off so well that the so-bad-it’s-good sequel outgrossed the original and spawned a TV sequel 15 years later. All due to the shitty Transformers movies when explosions were the leading thing than the story and coherent screenplay. Then they all looked on his first movies noticing how he loves explosions even when the movies were overall great stories. Almost 20 years later we still face more explosions from Bay than good storytelling so ... Bad Boys 2 was the last great Bay movie :///

@@dicekolev5360 I respectfully disagree. I enjoyed the first couple transformer movies. I didn’t even know ppl disliked them bc of explosions until I got on KZfaq. I just think it’s a trend that most people just hop on. I think the hype to hate is a train people hop on bc some critics say so. I think for myself 🤷🏽‍♂️ not saying you in particularly don’t, but many just are easily influenced bc of other’s opinions

One of the most excessive action movies in cinema history. You can either love it or hate it; but it is distinct to this day. I don't think any 'Fast and Furious' movie is as out there as this one. Also Gabrielle Union is terrific in this, and her chemistry with Will Smith is fantastic.

Has been my all time favorite film for two decades now. This film perfectly nails the visceral large scale action, Lawrence and Smith at their peak, Michael Bay in his peak, 🔥 soundtrack, and perfect balance of comedy and action. Absolute 10/10 and easily best in the series!

Can’t wait to have a friend with a teenager daughter that goes out on a date only to act as a drunk uncle to terrify the guy That 20 years later saves the whole family. 4 is actually very good. Loved it.

I maintain that this film is closer to a horror comedy where the monsters are Mike and Marcus that also happens to have some pretty wicked action scenes. People die in action movies, excessively if we're really having a good time, but I swear to christ, the contempt for human life on display in this movie is something that one generally finds in things named like, Cannibal Buffet Line: The Return or the like. I watched it before seeing For Life and just the ethical whiplash is crazy, let alone the filmmaking style.

BB2 is one of if not the most explosive action films ever made. No one in the industry shoots and cuts like this genius. Bay is the ultimate action director hands down and heavily underrated. This film set a benchmark for chase sequences and intense shootouts with amazing and clever camera work and quick cutting editing. I understand this man and his film process, I get excited when I watch his films. I know I’m heading for a pure eye candy adrenaline rush, I love Michael Bay films.

I remember the time I watched this and seenSeth rogen and Evan Goldberg names on the credits and was shocked ,bad boys 2 is definitely the funniest one of them all with the iconic Reggie scene but they also emasculated Martin ,my uncle was so mad about that but all in all this is the best bad movie off all time ,seen this in theater twice ,summer 2003….memories

I didn’t think bad boys two was that bad it was a little annoying in certain parts but in other parts, it was very entertaining. The action was off the chain. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith never lost any of their chemistry all in all, even though I think the first one is still the best. This one wasn’t too far off from it.

Bad Boys 2(2003). There's rats "making love". Dead bodies getting hit by cars. X-rated movies in an electronics store. A guy dying from a drug overdose! The film would be unwatchable without the slick action scenes.

If we got rid of the Dan Marino scene. I'd appreciate the movie. It (the movie) just goes too long imo and felt like filler in that chase. I liked Ride or Die more. Don't get me wrong, a Dan Marino cameo somewhere else would've been better.

My favorite Michael Bay movie lol. My mom showed me the Bad Boys movies, and 2 is one of my favorite trashiest movies to watch. Michael Bay was still in peak form as his eccentricities were cranked beyond the max, and the cast were at their best too. I wish Bay came back for the sequels, but the first two are my preferred installments

The problem with the movie wasn’t the action sequences. They were great. It was the music. Not getting mark mancina to compose the music and getting Trevor Rabin instead really hurt the film. Trevor Rabin is a good composer but not for this film. It should have been mark mancina because his score in the first one was the best.

The best of the Bad Boys in my opinion, people like to hate on Michael Bay and for me his movies do the job of entertaining me, to disconnect (even if they are dumb action movies) I like his movies (except Transformers: The Las Knight that movie is trash) my favorite being 13 Hours followed by The Rock and Ambulance!

Bad Boys II is not (in my opinion) a "so bad it's good" movie. It is a great action movie...period. I grew up watching the original numerous times and I was unsure about the idea of a second movie. I was completely blindsided by how epic and hilarious Bad Boys II turned out to be. Bad Boys for Life was fun and I was glad to see Smith and Lawrence again, but it doesn't hold a candle to the second film. So I was really irritated by the Joblo team here constantly telling me that the Belgian directing duo of the third and fourth films are more talented filmmakers. Based on what? They barely have a filmography and have just started their careers. I wish them the best, but just because you guys hate Michael Bay so much does not necessarily mean that these guys are more talented by default. I have been a movie nerd for about 25 years at this point, and I am SO TIRED of every movie buff hating on Michael Bay. Is there some sort of legal contract that to be a movie buff you MUST HATE Michael Bay?

Bad Boys I classic movie and the best from the franchise. Bad Boys II also good to great but the stupid ending in Cuba weakens the movie for me. Part III awful. Watched it with friends in cinema and hated it. I won’t watch the next part. Isn’t my cup of tea anymore.

In my opinion the Cuba ending was good, I liked it. Destroying everything what Tapia built with his wicked money was good, but can I ask why you think the ending weakens it. Because I didn't have any issues with the ending and I loved it.

Wait, what?!? BB2 is easily the best one in the franchise. For me, while I do see it as “ridiculous” and “OTT”, I don’t see it as “so bad, it’s good”. I save that for movie like THE ROOM, PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, etc. Movies where the actual “badness”, makes it entertaining. BB2 is a very intentionally entertaining movie. For me, only when the filmmakers did not intend a movie to be as bad as it is, but somehow the movie remains entertaining, only then does it get “so bad it’s good” status. So I differ at least with the definition and therefore, the main thesis of this video essay. I did still like the video and found it interesting.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the directors of Bad Boys for life are in no way more talented than Michael Bay. They're fine filmmakers but you lost credibility what that opinion. BB2 was uncompromised and made for a specific audience, who loved it. Moving on.
