What Happened to Complex Media?

HipHopMadness

Күн бұрын

Hip-hop has managed to hop from urban neighborhood streets to the world-wide web. With mainstream media shutting its doors tightly on rap music exposure years before the internet was even a thing, digital media online has given way to hip hop-rooted platforms like HipHopDX, AllHipHop, RapRadar, and maybe the most lucrative of them all, Complex. Founded by Marc Ecko. Digital media companies are having a hard time keeping up with their past growth spurts, especially with intense web traffic competition coming from advertising mammoths like Facebook and Google. This has placed major pressure on companies like Complex that have invested heavily in digital video. In 2017 alone, both Vice and BuzzFeed missed their revenue projections, Mashable found itself selling for well under its valuation, and company layoffs ran rampant across companies like, Vox Media, and CNN Digital but how is Complex Media holding up in 2019?

Complex shows are too guess reliant. Most of their shows depends on who's the guest, if you don't like the guest you're not gonna watch it. I like hot ones and sneaker shopping, but when they have people I don't care for there's nothing to watch.

I feel like after Jinx, Oberg, Alex, and Tamra Dhia went their separate ways, Complex lost their footing/steam. They were all a relatable cast of characters that had their own spin on hip hop news and other cultural things that were going on. They felt like real people/people you would hang out with. The new people they have doing ComplexNews are a bunch of hype beast edgelords

Complex was at its peak: in 2015 during the Drake and Meek beef In 2015 when everyone was waiting on Rodeo to drop In 2016 when they did vids on Kobe and his retirement In 2016 when the warriors broke the 72 win record and when they lost the finals In 2016 when views dropped In 2016 when everybody roasted the shit out them Steph curry lowtops After that they had other high points. Like when they highlighted the P.C. Mean comments that weren't actually the mean funny comments with all the likes. And then when Natasha and Nadeska joined complex because they're both fine. What am I missing?

HIGH LION complex is not bad, however they run it like a corporate big company. When investors are involve the only thing that matters is that numbers and those numbers need to go up to increase their investment in an industry like Complex...a content media creating company thats not possible because the people that come up with content is their employees and if they run it like a 9-5 then no one really feels to be creative. They havent been innovative in a long time...theres a reason why all the heavy hitters there have left...usually thats a sign to bounce also when people that are in asset to company leave.

It's all about personalities, that's why Vladtv & Revolt is winning. You have to have a good host or interviewer with a variety of different people to interview and get good conversations out of them. People under value that skill but that's what allows these type of shows to thrive. Bottom line Complex has dry ass personalities on there now, and content either not matching or working well together, like their sports program with a porn star and Gilbert Arenas, WHY??

Philip DeFranco talked about this after Defy shut down. People start a channel then go out a find funding for it. The channel balloons because all of these dollars are being thrown at it. But it's not sustainable. The channels that work, are the ones that grow authentically. Hot Ones, is a perfect example of this. They started with NO budget and begging people to come on. Now 4 years later, they've had Charlize Theron on the show. Suits think you can throw money at the internet and it will automatically work. But the internet is about connections (pun not intended). There's MILLIONS of things to watch, you come back to the things you feel a connection to.

I never had a reflex to follow their channel or watch their shows. It might sound weird but as a visual artist, I was not attracted by their shows because visually it looked too official. The way their panels were installed made them look like classic tv shows. It's the Internet, people like it cozy or with the cameras installed near the subjects. There were also no elements that could catch the attention. On the Breakfast Club Show, they have bottles of Hennessy and other stuff on the background that catches the attention of those who watch the shows. People unconsciously need to feel close to the hosts. Once it's done, people won't necessarily go back and watch shows on complex like that unless they change that. That's my opinion.

The staff are uninteresting. That’s why they fail to get the views. Shawn Evans is the only one making a name for himself, because he is a great interviewer.

You didn't really answer your own question or form an opinion. You just went over what they have done, and it was a good recap but you didn't give me as a watcher any new info or form a basis for why the video exists. What was your thesis for what is "Happening to Complex?"

They tried to make it a white hip hop platform so it failed. I def don’t wanna see a skinny white girl work out and talk rap. Wtf is wrong with these companies

This is why youtube is honest. If the content is good people will watch. theOdd1sout is crushing their company with cartoons with voice over.

I think the problem is they pick the wrong host. Most of the time they are “too safe” and uninteresting.

Digital Media is so saturated now days that you have to many fillers that just seem generic trying to copy whatever topic or topics is hot at the time or try to be different just to be different without any direction and it does not matter if it an App, KZfaq, Cable or anything else Trying to get views is harder then ever when Digital Media is so saturated now days
