Yeah that’s true. The Raiders had him do these absurd FG try’s, like 65, 68, 67 yards. He had the leg to do so, but they always kept trying just to break the record. Just shows how much of a threat he was and how much they trusted him

To have a player one can root for, who lifts up the spirit, is an icon for the team, the face (=> PR and marketing value via full stadiums, better TV ratings, stronger connection to the fan base and a higher merchandise sale), are values which are not captured by this statistic. Furthermore his number is not reflecting his true skills for he was far more often trying impossible kicks than the other, higher ranked kickers.

Kickers aren't drafted early because they aren't drafted early. Sounds stupid, but teams seem to have agreed not to draft these positions early, so it's unwise to spend a first or second round pick on a player that would likely still be available in later rounds. Drafting doesn't happen in a vacuum, and since there are more contested positions teams go for those instead. But in terms of value compared to draft position I agree, kickers are drafted way too late.

However when I looked back at the 99 season, the raiders lost 4 games by 3 points or less. Their kicker that season (Micheal Husted) was abysmal and missed so man easy fg's and pat's .That was the difference between going 8-8 and 12-4. Al Davis knew what he was doing by drafting Janikowki so high.

The only Punter in the HOF. Ya I'd say that was one of Al Davis' most cleaver draft picks. He literally controled games with his foot.

And now the two best kickers in the league, Tucker and Boswell, were both undrafted. With Tucker probably being the best ever. Granted it still wouldn't make sense to draft someone like Tucker in the first round, but once you get to rounds 5-7, if there is a possibility of a K/P being amazing, it's well worth the pick imo. An average kicker is worth more than some rotational player you might get in rounds 5-7.

Matt Gay was probably the best kicker in the league last year, 32/34 on field goals, 48/49 extra points.

That Justin Tucker field goal still bothers me because on the previous play there was a blatant delay of game that was missed. This wasn't even a a case where the ball was snapped right after the clock hit zero, but when you actually look at the film where the play clock is visible you can see it hit zero for over a second before the center even starts moving. I have tremendous respect for Tucker and what he can do, but had the referees done their job correctly, that kick likely wouldn't have even been attempted.

I’d be curious to look at Janikowski’s touchback rate back when the kickoff spot was at the 30. It doesn’t give much more credit to his career but I think it did give him slightly more value in his time when having a big leg was more important
