Remember when Metroid Prime was still a thing? What happened to the Metroid franchise to cause the series to entirely skip the Wii U home console generation? Will we ever get a Prime 4? Will it be on the Switch? I take a look at all of these questions and more in this edition of Franchise Report.

The one thing I have to say after METROID Prime 4 and METROID Samus Returns were confirmed... BUY. THE. DAMN. GAMES. If you want the METROID series to keep going, support the franchise! Don't sit there and watch it burn. This is most likely Samus' last chance! We need our bounty hunter back on the top as one of Nintendo's premier titles!

Until we see footage of Prime 4, I'm naturally hesitant. Other M burned me, and FF only solidified my criticism towards Nintendo as of late in how they handle the IP. Samus Returns is a good return to form in several ways, though I've gotta say AM2R is the better remake of the two.

I want Metroid back so badly. The honest truth is that Halo did soar miles above it, and each Prime sequel released in the same year as a Halo at the time. People just wanted Halo more. With Halo 5's low, and the Metroid woes, hopefully we will be surprised at E3 next month. Fingers crossed.

I think saying "people wanted Halo more" is not really accurate since they are both console exclusives. I think the difference is that a lot of people buying an X-box wanted to play Halo but not a lot of people buying a Gamecube wanted to play Metroid. Metroid always has been kind of an odd ball in Nintendo's library while the X-box' identity is pretty much build around Halo in a similar way to how Nintendo's is build around Mario.

Hey, side question, howcome you'd start a Nintendo channel right now when we know how they treat KZfaqrs?
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 7 жыл бұрын
Great question. The way Nintendo handles fan content, and specifically KZfaq, is highly unfortunate. More freedom is better for everyone in the long run. However, the truth of the matter is simply that there are tons of Nintendo fans out there who are hungry to have conversations about their favorite games, franchises, and hardware. KZfaq is one of the best places to be a part of that conversation and since people at work tend to slowly walk away from me when I start talking about why Squirtle was clearly the better choice over Charmander, I needed an outlet...
@DaisyAma488
@DaisyAma488 7 жыл бұрын
Well more power to'ya dude. I think it's just a shame if Nintendo has anything to say about these videos, your hard work and talent is going to go to waste. I see you gaining some subs as we speak after a successful reddit post, I might recommend renaming the channel and talking about Nintendo and more, other games and gaming stuff too so they don't claim EVERYTHING you do. Either way, good luck out there. I want to put together a channel myself soon for game analysis.
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 7 жыл бұрын
So I believe if you want to produce Nintendo content on KZfaq and have them not get claimed you have to sign up for their Nintendo Creators Program. The reason people don't do this is because that means they will take a portion of your profits (if you make any) on your video. For a lot of people who produce gaming content this is a big problem because KZfaq is their livelihood. This means that there will be overall less Nintendo content than other gaming stuff as a result. Let me know if you ever put that channel together! I'm always down for a good game analysis.

BOTW was in development for 6 years I believe. Nintendo worked on it for a very long time, so it's not like they pulled it out of their ass in the last few years. Federation Force was a thing in Nintendo's internal system since before Other M was a thing. That tells me that the only reason we got Metroid anything outside of Smash Bros is because Fed Force was around before the Other M debacle. Which seems to me that Nintendo hasn't done anything with Metroid after Other M, besides Smash, and that's very depressing. Federation Force didn't sell bad because of us, it was entirely Nintendo since they released in in the worst way, at the worst time. Spin off that looks nothing like a serious Metroid game would to tie us over before whatever comes next, which if there is a next time, it has yet to be revealed, so it seemed like all we would be getting is a spin off in 2015. I bought Fed Force day 1 and I had lots of fun, both in Blast Ball, as well as offline/online single player. However, after I beat the story, I haven't touched the game again. It's a good game, Nintendo just did nothing to quell the hate and convince people it's worth checking out. I was convinced day 1 since it's something new from Metroid and the gameplay looked fun from the Treehouse Stream. However, I was a very small minority it seems. Many people hated on the games to the point that a petition was formed, and Nintendo did NOTHING to change that. They went silent for almost half a year, until Tanabe came on during a Direct to give people more info about the game. The problem is, all the info Tanabe gave was already available since the E3 2015 interviews, so nothing new was gained and it convince nobody. Then Nintendo just stealth released the game during Metroid's anniversary month, after shutting down AM2R. Great.
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 7 жыл бұрын
The rhetoric surrounding FF went along the lines of: We know that you have problems with this game, but it's just because you haven't played it yet. In fact, I'm pretty sure in an interview about the game either Reggie or Tanabe highlighted Wind Waker as an example of a game that received a lot of hate initially but is now (almost) universally loved. I think by doing this, they underestimated how much of an impact the negative response for the game would have on the overall sales. Like you said, Federation Force was not a particularly bad game, but lots of fans wanted nothing to do with it in order to make a point.
@TheAccursedHunter01
@TheAccursedHunter01 7 жыл бұрын
I agree, it was Reggie who used Wind Waker as an example. The fact that they never tried to convince anybody to buy the game or turn people around is apart of what you said, they underestimated how great the negative response was. This is along the lines of what my friend said, where he believed that it's never our fault that a product doesn't sell well. There are some factors where not enough people get notified about the game or something, but I can agree with that idea. Just look at Dead Space 3. I honestly wanted some sort of game, manga whatever that takes place from the perspective of the Federation in order to expand the lore, but I filed that under "There's no way in hell they'd make a game like that." What do you know, they made a game like that, just wrong place, wrong time, wrong method... almost everything was bad. Thank you for replying.

What they failed to realize is that the Wind Waker example was primarily a qualm with graphical style. Such an issue does peter out over time, and rightfully so, because that's not what the core of a game is. FF's case, on the other hand, was a gameplay and setting issue. That DOESN'T fade over time, because that IS the core of a game. My frustration isn't that it's "not Metroid", because I enjoy many games that "aren't Metroid", but rather that by calling it "Prime" it essentially promised a game like the Prime Trilogy... a promise that was broken as thoroughly as possible. Even THAT wouldn't be too bad if the game behind the title was interesting for its own sake (such is why I enjoy Banjo's Nuts and Bolts for instance), but it just ISN'T. It might be "okay", but I only have time for "okay" games if they're squarely in my favorite genres, and usually not even then!

I've been really hoping for a sequel to fusion. Nintendo just left the timeline off there, with so much potential. Instead of continuing that, they chose to make an endless amount of prequels. That's not a bad thing, as at least they're taking the series somewhere. However, it would be really nice to see a return to the 2d metroids and to see what happens to samus after fusion.

It is interesting that you skipped Fusion. I am only 4 minutes in, so maybe that gets addressed later. The only reason why I point this out is that Sakamoto continued to work on Metroid from the end of Super till the release of Fusion. (He never quit up until recently... But I think any person can only be back stabbed by fans only so many times) I really would want Sakamoto helping out on the next Metroid game. Even if he is kind of just some sort of supervisor. I am sure they will make the 2.5D game that most fans have been asking for and a totally 3D game that does something completely new. As bad as many aspects Metroid: Other M was, it did bring a lot of innovation to the formula and with the Joy-con controls in mind we could see something that could work a lot better and provide people with the experience they want out of a current generation Metroid game. Samus and Metroid will never be dead, but I do think there is going to be a bunch of passing notes until we get another hit.
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 7 жыл бұрын
Yup! Unfortunately, I had included a section about Fusion but it was pretty poorly executed on my part and I decided to cut it out. Looking back, I probably should have figured out how to re-work it into the video but due to how heavy the emphasis is on the Prime series I decided to drop it. If you were curious, this is what I likely would have mentioned about Fusion: Metroid Fusion actually did extremely well selling 1.68 million copies. Still less than Metroid II: Return of Samus in sales but not by very much! Since it released on the same day as the original Prime, it was part of that initial "Let's bring Metroid back in a big way" push and its success is part of the reason why Nintendo decided to continue pumping out the Metroid games a few years later (Zero Mission, Echoes, Hunters). Personally, I don't see a future for 2D Metroid that does not include Sakamoto in some way. Besides Metroid II, Sakamoto has been a huge influence on each of the 2D titles. Maybe a successful Prime sequel will get him excited to jump back into the Metroid ecosystem again?

Metroid Other M offers the player simpleness. I love the game for that and bought it 2 times already, aswell as the Prime compilation on Wii U. Other M is for me not worse than Super Metroid. I understand people complaining because their personal needs are not met. I too complained about Skyward Sword and even BOTW, but in the end I'm happy that both games came out and even while I disliked skyward sword at first, I had some nice memories and some fun with it. So while we critizise we should as real fans also buy the product to keep it alive.

This was a fantastic video. As a die hard Metroid fan who is BEGGING for a new game, this gave me a little glimmer of hope that something new is around the corner. I wish I knew why any of the titles struggled really... I thought they have all been good, with Super Metroid and Metroid Prime obviously being the cream of the crop. With games really trending in the direction of open world experiences, maybe this is the new direction they should go?
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 7 жыл бұрын
I have no idea what the answer is as to where the franchise should go. Part of me wants them to break all the rules and go all BotW on the series. Another part of me wants them to go back to a traditional 2D style and see what a next gen Nintendo Metroidvania really looks like. Maybe we can get both! At this point, I'll take anything.

This was really interesting to watch and I learnt a lot, like I didn't even know anything about this Watanabe guy. I thought that only Sakamoto and (in the past) Yokoi were the main Metroid guys. So it's good to know that there is hope. I'm actually one of the few people who likes Federation Force. Of course it's not exactly what Metroid should be and I would've liked another game where I control Samus more, but for what it is, it's pretty fun, especially if you can find someone online to play with. I had the luck to expirience the mission, where all of the players lose their mechs and then get them back one by one, with 3 other people, who weren't assholes. It was really fun to see how our small teams gets stronger one by one, and protecting each other, having different paths and so on. The missions are really varied too, so you always have something new to do. I also like the controls, so I could imagine a normal Metroid Prime game like that, but with Samus and without the mission structure. So if this was a test for Nintendo then I think it passed. I think the graphics worked too. I'm not a fan of the chibi style with the big heads, but luckily they didn't show any actual human faces. They screwed up with the music though. They easily could've remixed magmor caverns and phendrana drifts or something, put in another Robot Ridley with hsi theme and so on. Or why not bring back Kraid somehow and his lair theme from the Zero mission? The music was just too generic in FF. :/

Great vid, very well done. What happened to Donkey Kong? I grew up with the 64 and enjoyed DK64 but have not seen a 3D title since then..
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 7 жыл бұрын
I'm actually not exactly sure about DK. I'm assuming you are referring to 3D Donkey Kong because Retro has been working on the Donkey Kong Country Returns franchise. DK64 was developed by Rare (who now makes games for Microsoft) and seems to have sold relatively well. If I had to guess, it's likely that Nintendo does not see Donkey Kong as a super high profile franchise and currently only sees room for one type of DK game existing on their platforms at the time: the 2D ones. Kirby is in a similar situation in this regard.

There are plenty of videos (essays, more like it) on youtube of people explaining in detail why the good Metroid games are so good. What the good Metroid games did so right and why we love them to this day. The franchise is not being looked at from a corporate and unit sales point of view in these videos. A franchise doesn't need to sell 6+ million copies for each entry to have a loyal fanbase. Even if it sells only 1 million copies it's still a financial success because Metroid games don't need an army sized team of developers like other franchises do. Just a dedicated team who 'get it', all the time they need, and a proper budget to work with. Quality matters so much more than meeting deadlines.

The funny thing is, Other M was produced with the same concept as Zelda botw. They tried to reinvent the franchise by ignoring its previos 3d incarnations and trying to import its 2D roots into a new designed 3d world. It utterly failed to archive Zelda botws success due to its sloppy and unworty way it was produced. Instead of taking time to give Metroid a glorious comeback, they treated it like a generic action sci fi game with a truly uninspired setting, story and gameplay. It could have been great, but they missed to include too many iconic Metroid elements, relied too mutch on its cinematic sequences and moved too far away from what the fans knew from Metroid. There is nothing wrong with moving to a new direction, but they failed to show a decent alternative to the winning prime way.

+XrosSpirit I think a huge part of the fanbase hates the game that way. It was presented as a blockbuster and a promising reinterpretation of the Metroid franchise, but it ended up to be just a sloppy, weird experiment. Metroid Prime Federation force never promised to be a great game, but Other M did and not dilvered what it promised. In this case, the horrible reputation of this game is more than justified.
@GamerLord821
@GamerLord821 7 жыл бұрын
Focus more on what the game is and less on what the game isn't. I personally wasn't into Metroid at the time Other M came out but nowadays after catching up with the series I really don't have a problem with this game.
@demianzarnoski3288
@demianzarnoski3288 7 жыл бұрын
+XrosSpirit Even on that level the game utterly failes in multiple aspects. If you compare it to other Incarnations of the franchise like Metroid Prime, you can see the uninspired production in other corner of the game. The whole scenario and the setting had nothing unique and the iconic Metroid soundrack was replaced with generic invironmental sounds and cast out into non existence. The endboss was redicilously uncreative and was followed by a absurd scene, which looked like a rush and unfinished beginning of the actual boss fight against Mb. These are just a few points on a whole list of aspects which turned this game into an insult for the Metroid franchise. If this gane had not the Metroid title in it, you would forget that you are playing a Metroid game, since it ignores so many stylistic devices and characteristiks of a true Metroid game and didn't came up with an acceptable substitution. It ended up to be a trashy pseudo Metroid spinn off and was exposed as the inferior attempt it was.

Great video. Really well researched. Thank you for that. I was wondering what was going to happen with the Metroid series. I've been a huge fan since Metroid Prime. Metroid Prime was definitely my favorite video game ever. I'm kind of pessimistic though. I think that, unfortunately, the sort of people who would be into a series like Metroid would just find what they think are better options on the X-Box and Playstation. I think Nintendo games are mostly tailored for kids nowadays. I mean, don't get me wrong, I still love Nintendo games even though I'm 22 haha, but I mean I'm sure it's the kids who are causing games like BOTW to do well, whereas I don't think Metroid will benefit from that. I hope Nintendo can figure out a way though.

Yup, that's my bad. I had written in a section specifically for Fusion but ultimately ended up cutting it because I wasn't happy with the quality. I probably should have reworked it and figured out how to fit it in. In case you were curious, I responded to another comment regarding how Fusion performed as a Metroid title: Metroid Fusion actually did extremely well selling 1.68 million copies.

Freelance Nintendo why are you criticizing Prime Pinball if you haven't played it? I was with you up until there (other than not mentioning Fusion). Prime Pinball really captures the essence of Prime, despite the genre change. It is still worth playing; in fact, I played it earlier today. If it had come out after a long Metroid drought, I could see that being an issue, but it came out in the middle of a lot of other Metroid titles.
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 7 жыл бұрын
Hey davidnabbit! I actually in no way was trying to criticize Prime Pinball in the video. My point was simply that Prime Pinball was never intended to become a big seller while Nintendo had originally hoped that Federation Force would do fairly well. So the fact that FF sold less than Pinball really shows how poorly received the game (FF) was. My stance on Pinball as a game experience is completely neutral which is why I asked SergioPL if it was a game I should take a look at in the first place. As for Fusion, I tried to lay it out best in other comments but I had written Metroid Fusion into the original script and unfortunately did not end up keeping it in the final cut. Since my goal for the video was to simply talk about why Metroid went away rather than offering a complete history for the series, I felt that it would be ok to leave Fusion out because there was a way bigger emphasis on the Prime games since the start of the Gamecube era. It was not my original intention to leave the game out entirely, but it was poorly written on my part and I was trying to make the video flow a bit better. Anyway, sorry I couldn't keep you invested throughout the entire video! I appreciate your passion for the franchise though.

Metroid Prime Pinball is a lot of fun if you enjoy playing pinball video games. Music is awesome and the rumble support (if you get it w/ the rumble pack and have an old DS to play it on) is great too. Always surprised how much it seems people don't like Other M on the Wii too. I thought it was great minus the awkward ability unlock / Samus relationship w/ Adam; as a normal Metroidvania style action game it played great IMO. Really hoping we get at least confirmation and a tease of a real Metroid at Nintendo's E3 event next month, it's been way too long... Love Prime and Super and kinda pissed Nintendo didn't celebrate the anniversary w/ a proper 2 remake like AM2R which was fantastic! Hoping some day they even try making a game solely on the history of the Chozo.

I think it's growing more and more likely that Nintendo is bringing Metroid back to the Switch, with OBE1 saying it (and he got a lot of stuff right, more than Laura Kate Dale anyways), Reggie's hint in an interview (where he's asked about Mother 3 and Metroid, he says “So I have nothing to announce-here. But we are aware that there are some key IP that consumers just can’t wait for the next true installment in that franchise’s legacy. Suffice it to say, we’re aware of it, and talk to me in a year and let’s look back and see what’s happened.”) and his recent statement about a big E3 for the Switch and 3DS, I can only hope... I hope they look back to the original like they did with Zelda and go off that as a basis for the game. BTW, great video! I came from /r/nintendo and was pleasantly surprised by the quality, you've just earned yourself another sub.
