When F-Zero launched in 1991 alongside the SNES, it brought with it the promise of a next generation experience. But the truth remains that multiple console generations have come and gone without the promise of a new grand prix. However, in 2017, things are starting to change and if there was ever the time to argue for the return of the F-Zero franchise- that time would be now.
Special thanks to Jonah for emailing me about F-Zero and offering up some resources he found on the subject.

F-zero is more than just a video game to me it was literally my entire start of getting into video games. I remember being 5 years old and being given a Super Nintendo as a late birthday gift. F-zero was literally the very first video game I ever played. And I don't think I will ever be able to describe exactly how I felt once I saw those words across the TV screen: "The race is over. You are an F-Zero MASTER!" As a kid I literally felt the game was congratulating ME. I went on in my later years to complete f-zero X and the Game Boy Advance titles as well. F-zero GX admittedly was extremely tough but that can be said for most. (While it's not 100% complete I'm most of the way there) Once I was old enough and able to shop online one of the very first things I ever bought was a complete and packaged copy of f-zero climax and it to this day is my favorite Game Boy Advance game. F-zero is fact my favorite racing series and Nintendo IP all together. I hope one day that the series will be revived. ( I literally was one of those kids that knew where Captain Falcon came from long before Super Smash Brothers was even a thing ) I really do love F-Zero, and even if Nintendo gives up on it I never will. "Forever he will be my hero..."

First of all, JadeStep 96, “you’ve got boost power!” Good job crushing those tracks. Maybe you can clear something up for me: I’m very confused 🤷‍♂️ at how others rate game toughness. I got okay at the original and X, years after release, then purchased MV and GX on release and beat them within the year, still playing regularly to this day. But I cannot beat either of the originals. I find them WAY harder than their real sequels (I consider GPL and Climax to be fan fiction, pretty but controls aren’t tight enough for f-zero.) For me the ”blast turns” alone make MV so much easier than the original, And while both 3D versions have awful camera angles, GX for some reason feels easier to control. I love these games, so please take these criticisms in that context. I really would like to understand why I see the games backwards, in case it can help me to find fun and skill in playing them that I don’t currently have. Thanks.

@@JasonJrake You basically didn't "beat" F-Zero GX until you unlocked all the side content from the story and Grand Prix, once you 100% the game you unlocked F-Zero AX, which was built into the game disc. The game is so notoriously difficult that most people didn't even realize that AX was built into the disc until 11 years later. . .

While i did not grow up with fzero its not only my favorite racing game series and one of my favorite nintendo ips. I started getting into the series when I bought a snes around 2015 and one of the first games I got was fzero. I felt in love with it the second I played it. What also helped me was avgn who constantly praised it. And game sack with their review on the gamecube. I currently only own the original, gx, and maximum velocity. But I still love the series and will continue too. And like many I cant wait for a new entry when it happens

Considering how GX could be the most satisfying arcade racer ever made, it depresses me how it didn't even get to 1 million copies sold. A lot of that has to do with the lack of the Gamecube's success, but it still deserved a much larger consumer base.
@hachimitsu9730
@hachimitsu9730 5 жыл бұрын
@@therealMrA At the time when GX came out, I a major F-Zero fan simply didn't have the money to buy myself a new console. Many fans who grew up at that time simply did not have the money or time, as they had to fulfill grown up duties etc. Others considered Nintendo at that time a childrens console and switched to Playstation, this minddrift happened at the time when N64 was at its height. This thinking is nowadays almost dead, as all people understood that shooters are more likely to be played by 12 year olds while grown ups prefered interesting "childish" games. For years I dreamed to finally get my hands on the game, but time went by and I bought myself computers instead of consoles as it was more affordable. We have to understand that in the late 80's and 90's consoles were what a full fledged PC with internet is today, thats why the first F-Zero sold very well. F-ZeroX could still catch up, but Playstation and computers aswell as fans who grew up and couldnt afford the luxury of a console left F-Zero GX sadly and unwantingly in the dust.

I yet have to play GX as i've just bought GameCube to play it and awaiting delivery... I think it is not actually about graphics that "did the job"... In F-Zero X everything was sure "over the top cartoonish" but it wasn't the thing that made your heart pump blood faster. In matter of fact it was the music. From the opening riff, through main menu j-metal theme, to countdown. It was the sound :) I love visuals of contemporary games but i could live with X's graphics if the remake was as good with sound department and sense of speed as X was.

Criterion is not EA, they are one of the developer working on some EA games but they are not EA and they own the Burnout the series, not EA. The first two Burnout games for GameCube and PS2 were made by Criterion and published by Acclaim. Criterion and Bioware are third party developers, they are free agent studios and work closely with publishers (including EA), they are not subsidies own by EA. Remember that it was Bioware that made Sonic Chronicles, a Sega game, not an EA game.
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! So I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this but in 2004 EA bought Criterion completely. You can read more about that here: ( www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ea-buys-criterion-deal-includes-game-studio-and-renderware ) EA also bought Bioware in 2007 ( www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-buying-bioware-pandemic-for-860m/1100-6180818/ ). The games you mention don't really apply to your statements. The Burnout game released for the Gamecube and PS2 were published by Acclaim years before EA bought Criterion ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnout_(video_game) ). Sonic Chronicles was actually published by both Sega and EA ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Chronicles:_The_Dark_Brotherhood ). Regardless, Ghost Games IS part of EA ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Games ) and 80% of Criterion has shifted over to that studio ( www.vg247.com/2013/09/14/criterion-games-staff-reduced-to-17-as-60-65-people-move-over-to-ghost-games/ ). The original founders of Criterion have moved on to a different studio: Three Fields Entertainment ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Fields_Entertainment ). Criterion is currently working on the Battlefront series- for EA. So our considerations of how EA feels about Nintendo are still valid regardless of whether or not Criterion is in the picture because we are really talking about Ghost Games now.
@FreelanceNintendo
@FreelanceNintendo 6 жыл бұрын
Edit: You may be right with Sonic Chronicles actually. My bad. It is likely that since the game was being worked on before EA purchased Bioware, that the publishing deal with Sega was still active.

Just so you're aware, there was a recently published interview with Toshihiro Nagoshi (GX's producer) that claims GX sold over 1.5 million units, not the 0.65 million that you claim, so it really wasn't a financial failure at all. Source: www.resetera.com/threads/edges-big-feature-on-nagoshis-career-monkey-ball-f-zero-gx-1-5m-ww-yakuza-origins-and-future.61808/ Also worth noting that the only reason Amusement Vision existed was because of the failure of the Dreamcast. They divided into a bunch of companies in an effort to save Sega, and once they were doing better four years later in 2004, all the companies merged back into Sega.

*Closer look at Mario Odyssey* a safe bet, since Odyssey's trending right now, even if its overpopulating with other content, tons of views guaranteed even if i personally think something more obtuse would be more relevant in the long term, but logical choice. *The Zelda Formula (Is BotW a Zelda game?)* love this one, to me botw is literally The Phantom Pain again, the whole legacy of a iconic franchise, reduced to just another pitch perfect calculated triple A sandbox game, rather than a more unique and fan-focused installment, it's saving the franchise's rep sure,bringing many zelda-haters back in for reevaluation , but the game itself has a bleak and depressing tone all over the overworld, with a elusive story that chills my heart every time i realize theres not more to see, *just like the phantom pain* it is the pain of what is't there, something missing,it's there in spirit but absent in presence , -plus both games have lewd female lead character outfits, Quiet and Zelda's pants- good god i feel like i could help write a whole script for this one, i used to exchange extensive conversations via private messages with other essayers and fans but.....this could actually contribute into helping someone long term plus putting some light on some points not many have reached yet , heck i can see the edited jokes... passion project of course, but now i think i'm getting over my head with how excited i am at the prospect, just an idea i'm open to *Nintendo's Mobile Strategy* interesting subject, haven't seem many topics about this, shouldn't get much attention since it is't quite affiliated with a top series but, a risk worth taking for the sake of information distribution *2017 Wrap up* fitting, the year's over and not much more will come, even if the aforementioned botw dlc comes to be blown anything out of proportion *Predictions for Nintendo in 2018* i'm not big on speculation but GameXplain makes dough with content like this, much like your Odyssey idea, good pick for a young channel with only 5k, specially if you had something surprising to bring to the discussion table, plus interesting visuals *What the heck is Retro working on?!?* more speculation, i think there should be a video on the subject but unless you actually know something we don't know and you're just going to make a let's all ask together video, tons of views, but little longterm substance in my cynical opinion. but they're all great ideas that could turn out as productive content, if your previous videos are anything to go by your quality rep, then the viewers already here are bound to come back, specially if you either come back fast, or come back big, if anything you feel motivated with, *go for it*

Thanks for the feedback on all of my ideas! I don't really have a concrete process when deciding what video I should work on next. The only metric I truly care about is whether or not the topic brings up a discussion that is worth having. You're absolutely right that some content will generate more views than others, but in the long run, I think I'll end up burning myself out if I just stick to those. I'm glad you think that the Zelda topic is so interesting The debate surrounding the validity of BotW fascinates me and I'm extremely curious as to how I might be able to add onto that conversation. On the other hand, I would counter and say that there is the possibility for similar conversations about Mario Odyssey. Recently, all I've seen has been undying praise for the title and although I do love the game, I feel like there are topics not being covered here. Is Odyssey a Mario game? What even is a Mario game? Galaxy and Odyssey feel like two very different approaches to the franchise and I'm honestly not sure if I'm personally ready to proclaim whether one is unquestionably better designed than the other. Regardless of my future videos, I'm glad you're on board! If you ever feel like further discussing these subjects or any other Nintendo topics in particular- let me know.

Sure, it's an okay game, maybe even good. It just pales in comparison to its predecessors (and is quite easy). Still, it has its moments and some good ideas, and a fan of the series will definitely get some enjoyment out of it (though be prepared to also be frustrated by it in places). I feel like I'm simultaneously trying to neither oversell nor undersell the game. It's hard to pin it down, since I feel that as a fan of the series I'm both more likely to forgive some parts of the game and on the other hand more easily annoyed by some, compared to someone who played it as their first GS game. So I guess "mixed" would be the word that best describes both the game's quality and my feelings about it. But writing this has made me think that I should also play the game again, so that's probably the best indicator for it. If even with its shortcomings it makes me want to play it again, then it is probably worth it for you to play it :)

Myamoto we want this: 1) a good, mature story mode settled in a futuristic world with an 80's sci-fi comic atmosphere. The stories of each character cross one another, and completing the stories the player can unlock upgrades which change both the performance AND the aesthetics of the vehicle (Blue Falcon will always be Blue Falcon but, for example, will have longer wings, bigger boosters with longer exhaust etc.). 2) We want more relistic interaction, for exaple if a vehicle follows another in close proximity, the exhaust of the vehicle in front will damage the vehicle behind. We want more detailed backgraunds for the tracks, we want new tracks and a track editor. 3) We want story related online tournaments, competitions and races on a monthly schedule in wich players of the same level can compete to win titles and improve their rankings. 4) We want more technical parameter for each vehicle and overall we want all of this with the same speed as F-Zero GX and the same music as F-Zero X. Smash bros is the same game it was on N64, and still fun to play, it sells well, why F-Zero should be any different? MYAMOTO-SAN PLEASE ALLOW A NEW F-ZERO TO BE BORN

So 2+ years later and we still haven't heard anything. I will say with sales data like that it does make sense why there were no new games in the series. But I'd also argue that being basically a ghost for almost a decade has probably increased its popularity if anything. Past fans probably still hunger for more, new fans discover the series every day, and most noticeably: despite all its time gone, there hasn't been a futuristic racing game that satisfied that desire for tight controls at fast speeds. There is still a hunger, and it arguably grows more everyday. Something will come, whether it's F-Zero or something else though, I can't say.

Here's what F-Zero has that Mariokart never will: being incredibly difficult to beat, and even harder to master. To this day many F-Zero X tracks such as Big Hand world records are nowhere near optimized as the mechanics and speed are so quick that few can keep up.

@@smh9902 Really? I think Big Hand is one of the easyer tracks... If you want to talk difficult then how about Scilence 2? here's an idea for the franchise: make F-zero the SMASH BROS of racing games -30 player multiplayer -super smooth framerate -a powerful level editor (with community sharing features, and being able to host custom courses in online play) -open world story mode -more fleshed out custom car creation (this could also be an opportunity for DLC or updates)

@999a0s

i want to add something that i think doesn't get talked about enough. F-Zero's universe and aesthetic is actually REALLY compelling. there's big 80's vibes going on, but put through a sci-fi lens - and what i would describe as Americana "hot rod" machismo and style viewed through a Japanese lens. F-Zero is really a Space Western, like cowboy bebop, but F-Zero takes on an unapologetically sleazy, cheesy (in the best way) 80's Vegas feel. the art direction of GX / AX dovetailed with this perfectly.
@sboinkthelegday3892
@sboinkthelegday3892 3 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. I would actually design a new F-Zero to have 3 parts: 1. Racing mode and level editor, where you can run low-poly "simulated" 30-player online races to win money, that can buy Drop Likelyhood Modifiers and Forged IDs. This is preface to the idea that racing has been banned, and riders have to wear masks and armor while they build illegal race tracks on alien planets. 2. A roguelike game mode that plays like Monster Hunter. You eguip DLMs and FIDs and go on BotW-like planets, where you have to finish a mission to build part of a track from the virtual designs, on that planet. Players have to keep redoing the missions and crafting equipment from drops, and this behaviour adds to the stats of their equipment set. If a thousand people all dress up as Boba Fett and go around wreaking havoc, chances are that the game recognizes the combination of Boba Fett armor as "the correct" use of that equoipment and the character as a havoc wreaker. This will circulate in the game world as the rumored identity of that character. and make it rarer to get DLMs that break that combination, conversely making it likely that other combinations steer away into their own most likely combinations. The amount of these options should be massive like Spirits in smash. 3. Splatfests. Gameplay in a fest will be solo races against 29 bots, all based on the cumulative actions of real world players, like with Death Stranding terrain development, and take place on race tracks actually built by hand by the playerbase on planets with various hazards and building complications. The devs will use data from building missions and aggregate similarly acting players into 100 or so characters, based on what planets they frequented under which FID, and which armor they combined, who stole assets by breaking already completed pieces of a track to finish THEIR mission more easily. These characters will become the real new F-Zero characters that keep evolving through the actions of the playerbase, and devs may take into account fan demand and legitimize popular fanon characters under some of the masks by making cutscenes where the mask gets finally removed, similar to new character reveals in smash bros.
@sboinkthelegday3892
@sboinkthelegday3892 3 жыл бұрын
0. Also it should be canon that it's the Metroid universe, and Cap Falcon, Samus Aran and James McCloud are kind of ultra super rare legendary characters whose armor sets count as "null" in the aggregate stats. The whole ordeal is to make an addictive gameplay loop out of farming stats towards the dressup you want to see become a real character, and paying homage to the wacky pro wrestleing antics and relationships in F-Zero with it's face and heel characters. Masks can be spun off into sort of a Kamen Rider/Pepsiman aesthetic to attract new fans, and it capitalizes on similar hype as Samus' first reveal as a female character when the canonized riders under the masks start to get revealed during fests. Imagine Smash character reveals were part of an actual game that you can play leading up to them and influence the result.

Well, if innovation is what they're after: You can easily make up a motion-based control scheme with the joy-cons. I thought up a two-joy-con control scheme where you use your mainhand joy-con as a control stick (think planes) and your offhand joy-con as a thrust lever (again, think planes). (And allow for regular controller usage as well, thanks.) Plane-like controls would allow for... Flight sections. F-Zero is a futuristic racer series, of course free-flight sections should be possible. (Not too free, of course, you couldn't just go away, but you'd have a trackless area bounded by an asteroid field or something. Kinda like surfing in Pokemon.) That should spice up the maps a bit. Speaking of... F-Zero has had map editors before, but the games with them have been pretty damn unavailable. So add a map editor. Combining that with online multiplayer (and thus, map sharing) would provide an almost endless fresh experience.
