Fun fact: concussions can change your mood. When filming this, I didn't realize I had a concussion. (The doctors checked my eyesight and helped me craft my story about the 50 ft wave, with the shark and the child I saved, but they didn't mention a concussion). The day after I filmed this, I felt really down and depressed. Then 2 days letter, felt happy again, like mood whiplash. I found out a week later I had a concussion and would have definitely not filmed the JWST video the same day, had I known. A dire warning for the lot of you!

I am glad you are okay, I had a soccer ball kicked directly into my eye when the opposing player was attempting to send it downfield (about a 90mph) kick and it caused a retina scar and permanent blind spot that could have led to a detachment. I just recommend covering your other eye and checking for any new blind or fuzzy spots as you heal. If they did not photograph your retina it may be a good idea too. Doing a blind spot test might be worthwhile too as your other eye compensates and you may not realize there is some damage.

That's actually very common. You really do not feel pain when you're doing exercise, because obviously your body wants to keep fighting or running when you're fighting or running. The blood is full of endorphins which help prevent you from feeling any pain. You can quite literally keep running on your injury for an hour before you realize you've been injured.

OMG! I know that feeling! I once rammed myself in the corner of my eye with a jack screw. Thought I'd gouged my eye out. Covered my eye with my hand and ran panicked to my neighbor's house. My vision was ok, but my eye looked a LOT like yours. I wore big sunglasses for a while.

So happy you're okay. If you *do* end up with a scar in your eyebrow, you're not alone: I have a scar through my right eyebrow from being hit in the face with the blade side of a *shovel*. LOL!!! It adds character to the face, and provides a fun story to share. lol

LOVE your stuff, long time sub; in my youth (I'm 66), I was a E. Coast surfer....mostly Virginia and Carolinas. I got rocked in high-school, wiped out....and I STILL have a scar on my upper thigh...from my surfboard's tri-fins cutting me: 50+ years ago. THREE lacerations across my knee/thigh area. GOOD times! ps: I've had (at least) 14 concussions that I KNOW about. My last was 2 years ago. My first was in 10th. grade.

That sounds awful. The eyeball is surprisingly resiliant. From what you wrote it sounds as though this injury happened a long time ago, but if it was recent, it would be a good idea to have regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist to make sure everything was okay.

Glad you're and thankyou for another physics lesson. You should definitely head to Bondi and hand out with the lifeguards (I'm addicted to that show atm) And... could maybe help explain how an isochronous curve works on a horizontal plain? (I'm a mountain bike trail builder and I'd love to understand some of the physics of berms in particular. Thankyou again for continuing to be awesome :D

WOW 😳😳😳. Hope you feel better soon but that's cool that you went. I always wanted to go surfing I haven't done it yet. I snow skied, water sky, ice skated, roller skated, snowboard, horseback, riding motorcycle, walk on stilts, skydive I have never went surfing want to do it really bad. I practice on the board that sits on a drum and you go back and forth before it hits the knobs on the bottom to learn how to surf before you go surfing. There's two different sides of the board had no problem doing that so I'm definitely going to go surfing. You have great videos love the science part.

Glad you're ok and KEEP GOING OUT! It happens and it'll happen again. One time we hit Newport when a storm came in (only real time it gets good surf there) and I had a similar incident except when the wave broke out from under me, I did a header right onto the now missing foam and hit straight sand. I hit flat across my forehead and nose and was lucky enough not to break my neck like they do up at the Wedge. Anyway, broke my nose on both my face and my board. I went back to where the rest of our group was with blood all down the front of my wet suit. They were all "what happened!?" so I messed with them and said "I don't know...there were these guys and they said 'locals only!' and ran off." My friends were ready to fight but I started laughing. We had just seen POINT BREAK a few months before. Dated myself there, lol. Physics lesson...stormy weather no bueno for surfing when you're not used to it.
