@VeronicaAndEdward
@VeronicaAndEdward 7 ай бұрын
I've been doing this forever. Sailors have also. Works for garden hoses, extension cords, audio cables, sailing, and so many more applications. Alternatively you can do a few winds in one direction and then a few winds in the other direction, either by winding on to the 'other end' of the imagined cylinder, or by doing a loop with a twist under itself. There's also a method of rolling the spool, but I usually find that annoying to work with, or a similar technique of alternating between picking up the next bit of cord with the left hand or the right, similar to the alternate ends of the cylinder, but you're carrying the cylinder in both hands and flipping the cylinder back and forth instead of just moving your winding hand back and forth. So there are few ways of completely eliminating the twists. I think perhaps my favourite is slipping every other twist backwards under itself, both clockwise, but one twisting clockwise and the other twisting the cord axially counter-clockwise to get it to flip behind itself, or behind the whole bundle to the other side of the cylinder. Hard to describe. Unfortunately it's not always tidy, especially for the figure 8. For my garden hose I actually have two separate pegs on the wall that I installed so I could do a figure-eight between them, like an infinity symbol. I usually have two long lengths spliced together so keeping from getting twisted is extra important.

It does work! I've been doing this on a larger scale with long extension leads, too. The bottom of the loop is hooked on a foot and the top on one hand while using the other hand to continue to add more figure-8 loops. They are never in a tangled state next time I use them.

When I worked the sound desk at Banstead Baptist church with the two Stus, newbs were taught to wind cables by doing one forward loop then twisting the wire over to do one reverse loop, then continue back and forth line that. It takes a while to get used to it, but it solves the same problem. Just when you undo, grab both ends and throw the loops! Very satisfying. It's also better for the cable as it prevents the wire being turned and twisted the same way over and over and over again which eventually will damage the internal cores of the wire. I feel your figure eight method is almost the same thing but at you say with the added benefit of two loops to half the area for the ends to pop back through 😅. You learn something new every day!

As a sailor, I learned to not coil my lines, but collect them in the natural figure-8s of just gathering the loops in my left hand -- I'm right-handed. As a result, I could grab one end of the coil, toss everything else out, and no tangles. You're doing about the same thing, which works for you. *Best,* after you get in the habit, it becomes automatic, making it EASY.

Just an fyi for those checking comments, the same applies to extention cords. The common technique for keeping an extension chord from tangling is to make a figure 8 compressed into a 0. It also works with your headphones, and allows you to add a velcro strap to hold the shape. The way I was taught was to think "twist, then untwist"

You could always just fold them in half until they’re of appropriate size. Folding cables works great as long as you’re putting them in an enclosed space where they won’t have space to expand, and even that can be mitigated by simply undoing one of the ends from its fold and wrapping it around.

i figured this out when a fire fighter taught me how to coil a water hose without twisting it. with the end of a wire in your right hand and continuing through your left with both palms down, make a normal full-hand loop. then move your left hand down and turn both palms up like you’re snapping a twig. from there, you pass the loop in your left hand to your right without flipping them and repeat. if you do it right, every other loop should be reversed to counteract the twisting. it’s pretty similar to the method in the video, but it stays in one circle and might not survive as much movement without a tangle unless you have tight pockets or hook the earbuds to the top of your pocket like i do.

From stowing threads and ropes, but also works on headphones and (long enough) cables: Line up both loose ends, hold them between thumb and index finger. Now make your figure eight. When the length is almost used up, wrap the looping end around the middle of your eight, overlapping itself at least once. Then through one of the figure-eight loops and over. Ta-da! Compact, no knots, doesn't just loosen itself, perfect for the backpack.

I started doing this a couple years back when you did the video and I haven't looked back since. I just fold it and put it in my pocket in such a short time that I don't even realize what I'm doing, and they ALWAYS come out untangled and ready to use. I have a new pair but the other ones survived for 2 years, outliving my wireless earphone's battery life

I hope this video means you're still with us, and getting back in front of the camera. It's been a while since people got lucky with such incredible presentation.

I've been bedbound since January with long Covid, but I still love to dress up for Halloween. So my husband made me this costume (posted by Kyle, the husband.) In her twitter page the 30 of October
