Catalonia (Catalunya in Catalan or Cataluña in Spanish) is an autonomous community in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula belonging to Spain, even though a large proportion of its population desires to form an independent Catalan state. This is also reflected in the region's rich vexillological tradition that boasts two historic flags, the Senyera, and the Estelada, of which a version with a white star, and a later socialist red star exist.

I don't know about the others, but Puerto Rico didn't fight against the Spanish (and definitely not with American help) and did never become independent. What happened was the Americans fought the Spanish in Puerto Rico (who didn't stand a chance) and just took control of the island.

During the 19th century the Spanish crown used Puerto Rico to become a place where theyd exile Liberal politicians which then fermented the idea of independence from spain and started several revolts which was also opposed by conservative liberals who wanted autonomy from Spain instead.

As a catalan it is frustrating when you watch usually anglophone KZfaq and whenever Catalunya is mentioned 9/10 times the estelada pops up as if it actually were the flag of the region and not a political movement. It's like if I would make a KZfaq video about the US but instead of using the proper flag I would use the thin blue line variant. So I'm thankful that there's a video explaining to anglophones what's what 👍 Also I'm impressed you even dug up the Milícia catalana variant even in Catalunya itself many don't know it

Worth to mention that the Catalan national flag, the one with the four stripes known as the Senyera, comes, stems from a banner that identified, symbolised an independent and sovereign crown of the Middle Ages of which Catalonia was one of the founding and main parts, the County of Barcelona, which would later be known as the Principality of Catalonia (worth to say that it was a principality among kingdoms...). Therefore, a proper translation of such early meaning or symbolism to the present would or could be the Catalan Estelada flag, which, precisely,, symbolises an independent and sovereign country called Catalonia (or the Catalan State or the State of Catalonia or the Free and Sovereign State of Catalonia, any denomination would perfectly fit).
@bnb6868

@@jordi6795 the senyera was the shield and banner of the house of Barcelona who founded the crown of aragon through their marriage yes. Yet this meaning/symbolism narrative you're trying to create makes no sense. It's just another case of noble family takes over territory. Noble family's shield and colour become associated with the territory. After a new dynasty takes over they keep the colours due to the association and prestige. Etc etc till it becomes the colours of the state, region or whatever centuries after. @@bnb6868 I'm not trying to create anything. I'm just describing historical-social facts. Was the Crown of Aragon and/or the House of Barcelona (or Aragon-Barcelona) a sovereign and independent entity? Yes, it was. Was their banner / coat of arms the four red/gules stripes on a golden/yellow field? Yes, it was. Was a flag consisting of four red/gules stripes on a golden/yellow field adopted by the Catalan people as their national flag? Yes, it was. Does the Catalan Estelada flag symbolises/identifies with a current sovereign and independent identity in the form of a Catalan state? Yes, it is. It's that simple. WAIT! There's a legend about the origin of the "senyera" flag! It states that the Frankish king visited the dying count of Barcelona, Wilfred, to thank him the help in defeating the Normans. As a dying wish, Wilfred asked for a simbol of his land. The Frankish king took his own golden shield, buried his hand in Wilfred's wound and painted four red stripes with his four fingers down the shield, and thus it became the symbol of Aragon.

Of the "extra esteladas" only the anarchist (and sometimes green) is used by anyone seriously, the comunists would use the red one, the "patriotic" or unionist ones i've literally never seen (and "patriots" (meaning the more right wing sectors) normally use saint george's cross or the "phoenix senyera" that signifies the continuation of catalan culture and resistance through time) and the muslim one is from a spanish far-right meme talking about how catalonia would become the "emirate of catalonia" if it became independent because of the immigrants.

The Estalada Vermella nowadays is used mostly by the current far-left nationalist party CUP (Candidatura d’Unitat Popular) or their simpathizers. And they advocate for the union for all catalan speaking regions. The “unionist” flag you showed its a bit of a contradiction, since in Catalonia, a “unionist” is someone who advocates for catalonia to NOT leave Spain. It probably has to do with the EU or something.

It's a monarchist, anti-independence, ultra right-wing and even anti-catalanist movement "Catalan Patriotic Movement" (1994-2000). Look it up on Wikipedia. It's actually just using Catalan symbolysm as a form of "False Flag" operation or even straight-up mockery of the catalanist and independentist movements. Despite the historic context provided and the work behind it, I'm afraid this video is just not necessary. Our flag hasn't changed, and won't change even if Catalonia happens to become an independent republic. The Estelada was created in 1908 to represent the independence moviment and, from there, sprang new versions of it. However, there is wide consensus amongst not only civil society but also the nationalist camp that the official flag to represent Catalonia and the Catalan people is our ancestral banner, the Senyera, whichever political and sentimental value the Estelada has to many in this land. Hence, I don't see the point in this video. Moreover, instead of speaking about these "versions" (which, aside from the standard blue one and the also quite used red one, the rest are absolutely a niche thing and I've never seen almost any of them in my life) further historical context about the Senyera and Estelada could have been provided, which would have made this content more engaging. Please take this comment as constructive criticism, it comes from a subscriber. Greetings from Catalonia.

Well I'm also Galician here and the Galician nationality comes first above anything else(that 90% stated is disproportionate cause that would mean underestimating the effect nationalist voters have in Galicia with the BNG being the second most voted party after all with a nearly dead Spanish socialist department far behind), Spain treats Galiza like shit and we are barely taking into consideration for most founding or overall plans, I curse my conservative countrymen that support PPDG and bring our nation into constant stagnation/mismanagement/corruption. Special mention to those deadly policies targeting our dear Galician language that certainly cast it under the rails more and more or all the cuts they've done to our public services. Like the our famous painter Laxeiro used to say:"Que fermoso país pero que carallo de xente."

The Blue Triangle represents the Humanity, the Star means the Freedom. The Senyera can be called Sang-i-or meaning "Blood and Gold". It is said that Jaume I born in Montpellier did it with his hand touching the wall and draw it accidentally with his blood after a battle with the moors

Yeah, "Humanity" and "freedom". Yeah. The same "freedom" that opressed castilian-speakers "enjoy" in that region (they have no right their children to be taught in their mother language, castilian). Very ...humanitarian, yeah.

@@aquilaxxi7953 If children want to be taughed in castillian then it's their problem and the problem of their families. It would be better if they move to Madrid or Andalusia. We are a nation divided in 2 countries: Spain and France and in this last one it is already dead also with Occitan

@@LuDa-lf1xd I have received a 100% catalan education from Primary School to University. And I repeat it, 100% with all the subjects (history, chemics, sport, maths...) even when explaining foreign languages like English we apply them from the catalan because like italian, portuguese or romania we are a Nation and mercy the democracy in Spain we have the right to do this, we have a different culture based in our literature from the fondation in the medieval ages. What it's stupid here is that spanish and catalan being so close to each other just like dutch from the netherlands and german or even more closer you become this intolerant and put barriers where they aren't

Not even the catalans know that in the current spanish flag there are already 4 Catalan symbols 😂 the only thing wrong is the language because old spanish is catalan( spoken from 5 century) while modern day spanish is made up between 1470-76 and imposed and forced from 1556-70.
