The 70s were a time when television would seem to try anything at least once. Science Fiction was one of the main genres where this was very true. Thanks to the success of series like Star Trek, and Lost in Space there was a deluge of, off beat and actually good genre TV. Typically it was with some sort of toy tie-in or angle to get children to watch and/or buy something. And just wait until Star Wars happened.
But, the early 70s would find a new kind of hero to grab the hearts and minds of kids across the country and he’d bring with him some of the coolest toys around. Because, he was literally made up of metal and plastic himself.
The Six Million Dollar Man would jump into television history with a premise that was brilliant, cutting edge, and perfect TV fodder. It would also make a heartthrob and icon out of a guy named Lee Majors. Who would eventually play the father to our lord and savior Ash Williams…but that’s another show.
On this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, we have the technology and capability to make the first episode all about The Six Million Dollar Man. This will be that episode!
This episode of Gone But Not Forgotten is written baby Jessica Dwyer, edited by Cesar Gabriel, narrated by Travis Hopson and produced by Dave Arroyo.

Lee Majors was awesome in the TV show Tour of Duty's last season. He played an old soldier named Pop Scarlet who had been in the army since ww2, but a bad attitude with authority kept getting him busted to Private by the time we meet him in Vietnam. About five years ago, a friend got into an accident, and when he woke from the coma after a few weeks, was missing his right arm at the shoulder. He got outfitted for a bionic arm that was integrated to his nervous system over the course of several surgeries and continuous physical therapy for more than two years. The PT was largely to get him accustomed to "commanding" his new arm to do things like pick up a glass and drink from it. The whole process took an incredible toll on his body, and he died of sepsis about three years after the accident. Still, his wife, family and friends had him around for just that much longer. Godspeed, Nate!

I put them on my school work once and even wrote me name as _"Steve Austin."_ Naturally the teacher had no way of knowing who it belonged to, so she basically had to call me out in the middle of class. I had the huge action figure, the rocket and such, but it was bittersweet. They were really cool, but were too big to incorporate any offer large action figure. Even classic *G.I. Joe* was too small. It was really very well made for the time. There was a huge disparity between TV and film in the Seventirs. Major film stars like Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Jane Fonda, Sophia Loren etc, etc would have nothing to do with television. TV meant your career was over if you were a feature film actor. Conversely, if you were a TV actor and werecwell known, film producers would pass you over and chose an unknown to star in their respective feature film. Cindy Williams Cindy Williams from Laverne & Shelley fame was passed over for the Star Wars film as George Lucas thought she was too well known as a TV actress for anyone to take her seriously as Princess Leia. I saw Cindy Williams on an expose about sexism in Hollywood in the Seventies. She alleged that she was 'unofficially ' told she had the part in Star Wars. Ms. Williams was dying to get into film as it paid significantly more than television work. Women in TV were paid way less than their male counterparts. Cindy Williams was stunned she didn't get the Star Wars role, and she was outright shocked when she heard Carrie Fischer got the part who literally had nothing on her acting resume and was 18 years old. But I digress I have friends who are script writers who claim the storyline, for the most time ( yes, there are some cringe worthy scripts and dialogue later on) and the movie type feel make The Six Million Dollar Man a timeless classic. I even heard The Sopranos creator David Chase cite the X Files and The Six Million Dollar Man as major influences on his ability to turn each of The Sopranos episodes into movie quality.

I’m a 70s kid and started rewatching this on Peacock recently. I agree the HD transfer looks fantastic. I haven’t gotten through the initial 3 made-for-TV movies but they pacing feels glacial now, even for these types of shows. I’ll try to keep pushing as I’d like to get to bigfoot, which definitely scared me as a kid. I’ve a memory of his face coming off showing the circuitry beneath; really freaked me out.

I tried to rewatch it too. You know, nostalgia. I couldn't do it! Couldn't get past the 3 "movies". Was bored out of my mind and really got hung up on how cheesy it all looked. Bad set production, lame dialog, and bad acting. Actually fell asleep a couple times. The memory of the show is way better than the actual show :(

Been waiting for some kind of remake for decades. The show has a special place in my heart as I once broke my arm playing Steve Austin when I was a kid.

I met Lee Majors on my 45th birthday - 8 years ago ! I was at Comicon in Birmingham (UK) and only went to catch a glimpse of Mr Majors. Comicon is more of my partner's thing as she loves all that stuff. She knew Lee Majors would be there, it was also my birthday AND she could go to Comicon under the guise of a "birthday treat". Very sneaky. Mr Majors gave a talk about how he was told not to attend as there had been terrorist threats in the UK around that time, but he said that if he stayed at home, it just means the terrorists would win.I waited all day for my opportunity to meet him and right at the death, I joined the queue to have him sign a picture for me.He was very ill at the time and had to keep taking a break. However, as his last signing that day, and despite needing a rest, he saw me. What a fantastic guy ! He offered me his hand to shake and he signed the pic "To Ian, Happy 45th birthday. Lee Majors". I told him that Comicon really isn't my thing and that I only attended to see him. Mr Majors replied with a wry smile, "I'll tell you a secret - this really isn't MY kind of thing either !" I'm glad his health has improved. I'd like to meet him again some day. The Six Million Dollar Man had unquestionably the greatest opening of ANY TV show in history. But as a kid, the stories somehow didn't speak to me. However, as a young teenager, The Fall Guy did and I never missed an episode. Lee Majors. Absolute LEGEND.

You could never remake the 6 Million Dollar man again. Lee Majors WAS that character. If they remade it today it would probably be woke and have Steve get transgender surgery after the near fatal accident. Then the rest of the pilot episode would be about him coming to terms with his new gender and wearing a dress. They'd make Rudy Wells Asian and Oscar Goldman would be changed to a woman character - Ossia Goldwoman. 🤣

I literally grew up with this show, it's launch coming very shortly before my birth. By the time I was in Kindergarten I was role-playing as Steve Austin on the playground. ;-) The episodes with Bigfoot stand out in my memory yet I am ashamed I didn't retroactively recognize Andre the Giant until it was just shown now. I know he was only in the first ep as Bigfoot but still....excellent topic to chose, and a very well done lookback at a time of SF gold. (I was especially happy to see the UFO clip while showing all the great SF of the 1970s. Criminally under-rated show.)

Okay, I’m well down the comments and no one has pointed out that the person you identified as Peter Allen Fields is actually Mark Frost and the person you identified as Mark Frost is actually Peter Gabriel, the British musician. Dorothy Fontana is correctly identified.

The show opening crash scene is the actual film of NASA's M2-F2, experimental wingless lifting body, crashing during a test flight in 1967. The vehicle was the prototype for the Space Shuttle. The test pilot, Bruce Peterson, survived the tumbling crash with severe injuries similar to the injuries Steve Austin was depicted as having suffering in the show, including the loss of one eye.
