Yes, he didn’t appear in the pilot though, the original Wally was tall for his age and they didn’t want him to be so tall so young so he got laid off and Tony Dow replaced him. Be glad the first Wally was too tall. How much different Leave it to Beaver would have been without him. A lot.

I still watch episodes of LB when I eat breakfast. I tape them so I can watch an episode regardless of what time I’m eating breakfast. Wally was the lowest-keyed character, but was my favorite. I have a lot of regard for Tony Dow even in “real” life, as he’s a very intelligent, down-to-earth guy who’s a very good interview.

Dang..my wife says He looked. exactly like me at his age in the "pool shot" at minute 0.58 I will say those years were very easy going and kind in many ways not seen anymore. I'm about the same age as Tony Dow & also served in the Army National Guard at the same time (1963-1969)but from the Dow photo in uniform shown, he must have been in the Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard! I'm glad to see that both "brothers" did their part & served! By the way, one of the other child characters in the show,i.e. "Gilbert" Steven Talbot, was a guest teacher at my college in 1974! It was a great show & I hope that the actors get "residual money" for their efforts!

I met Jerry Mathers when I got a knock on the door of my home in the mid 1960's and it was Mathers requesting to use my bathroom as he had been playing baseball down the street. Later, I ran into him again over at the Van Nuys Air National Guard in the very late 1960's, where we saw each other on guard weekends. There were a number of actors in the Van Nuys National Guard at that time. The above video states he was in the reserves, but, I would question the accuracy of that statement. He was always a very nice person.
@1royalpalm3 жыл бұрын
Mathers and I are the same age (73). I knew Mathers had previous acting experience (quite a bit of it), but I didn't know Dow had none. No matter, as Dow did a superb acting job. He must of caught on fast or was just a natural. And yes, 1963, IMO, was the last of the innocent era. In retrospect, the US flipped a page with the coming of the British Invasion (Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc.) the assassination of JFK, and dramatic rise in the counter culture.

They both are very good actors, as really everyone was in my opinion. The show was named for Jerry's part and Tony being the older brother, but not by many years, made the two Tony and Jerry compliment each other well. At that point, I don't think one could watch one without the other ,or one or the other if the other never existed. To this day a fantastic show of what a true family deals with in the reality of life!

The show had a realistic element most guys especially could relate too, Wally was the cool jock older brother, and didn't let anyone pick on his little brother, and wouldn't play ball with his friends unless they let Beaver play, and the reaction of Eddie Haskell to this compromise, that scenario was played out in real life everyday, who couldn't relate to that?

I love them all for the different personalities they brought to the show. I guess if I had to choose, it would be the "Beave". He seemed so innocent, always getting into trouble that was never really his fault...but it was...most of the time, anyway. I Loved Eddie Haskell. He was too much even for himself. I do appreciate the good morals and values that were presented, but sometimes it was just too "fake". Moms did not wear pearls and high-heels just to work around the house. Things like that were just too expensive in the 1950's and 60's. Most moms did not work outside the home and didn't have extra money for stuff like that. Anyway, I loved the show. But by the last season his brother was graduating Mayfield Elementary in the sixth grade while Wally was suspended in time and only graduated high school that same year! Not too good for a straight-A all American boy! Hahaha!
