oxygen cools down -> becomes liquid. -> needs less room -> balloon shrinks. you pull it out again. -> it gets warmer -> oxygen turns back into a gas. -> it spreads -> balloon grows.

@TheWrongBrothersTWB
@TheWrongBrothersTWB 7 жыл бұрын
Reeze Chepniz the oxygen doesn't become a liquid- it's melting point is ~218°C, nitrogen is 210°C. Instead of this the oxygen just loses energy so the molecules move less therefor take up less room, and where there is nothing it's a vacuum- and will close in around the oxygen
@Element_Finland
@Element_Finland 7 жыл бұрын
TheWrongBrothers why are we suddenly assuming the balloon only contains oxygen anyway? Also what does becoming liquid have to do with melting? Perhaps you're looking for the boiling point instead? And you forgot minus sign from both temperatures.

The way that cold and hot works depends on how active air molecules are. Colder molecules are denser because they pack together and don't move as much, because they lack energy, whereas warmer molecules are more active and bounce around (Difference between solids, liquids and gases). Now, because of the cold nitrogen, the air molecules became cold as well and wanted to clutter up. Since the inside of the balloon is a vaccuum, it contracted and shrunk because the air packed in. Once he removed the balloons, the air molecules could warm up again and want to spread out, 'refilling' the balloon.

This happens because when you put the ballon in liquid nitrogen the oxygen atoms move closer together because its so cold and that will make the ballon shrinkle. When you take the ballon out of the liquid nitrogen the atoms in the ballon will move away from each other and because its warm so the ballon will go back to its normal shape.

The nitrogen caused the gas in the balloon to condense down and as it got warmer it expanded back to normal. The reason some of them popped was because the gas inside the balloon started expanding faster than the balloon was thawing out so it couldn't withstand the pressure and then "BOOM."

when air gets cold, it becomes more dense (the amount of air the ballon takes up lace space) so the ballon skrinks. the air isnt gone. when it air heats up, it becomes less dense.

TheSmilingSun Absolutely nothing happens, microwaves don't actually generate any heat, they generate Electromagnetic waves, which cause water molecules to increase in temperature (as water is a polar molecule). Liquid nitrogen is not polar, and contains no water, so will not increase in temperature or evaporate faster, there are already videos of it on youtube :D

Guys this phenomena can be understood by the Charles Law which states that the Temperature of any gas is directly proportional to the Volume of the gas. So if temperature decreases then also volume decreases and if temperature increases then volume also increases.

Wow i didn't realize air compressed so much when frozen. At least i think that is what's happening here since it re-inflates when warming up. Is this why cold air sinks and hot air rises? cold air "condenses" and gets heavier? I had no idea it would shrink that much
@jiango
@jiango 7 жыл бұрын
zengrath air doesn't really get compressed, it's the gas particles in the air that lose kinetic energy due to temperature decrease

zengrath Cold air gets heavier (as its density increases ) and hot air gets lighter (as its density decreases). Then a similar thing happens to when you drop something heavy on water. The object with a higher density falls and the water is displaced. The heavier cold air falls and the light hot air rises.

guldrev PV=nRT P=Pressure V=Volume T=Temperature n=# of Moles R=Gas Constant For the case of the video, as temperature goes down, and as long as the balloons continue to experience air pressure consistently, then volume will also decrease in a direct relationship. If let's say the pressure decreased instead of the temperature, then the volume would indirectly increase.

I have a hypothesis. The air in the balloon becomes very compact when it gets to a low temperature, as almost all molecules do. Since it is such a low temperature, it will get very compressed. This also explains the popping and reinflating. As they warm to room temperature, they spread out, and causes reinflation. The popping can be explained by if part of the balloon was more frozen and stiff (the part in contact with the nitrogen) and the pressure exerted from the air was too much, and it popped. I like trains by the way
