Was working that day. We had over 20 fire trucks ready for you. All those fire trucks you saw landside were still coming into the airside assembly point. But we already had plenty on site when you touched down. The response time by mfb was incredible.

Thanks mate - that was probably the luckiest shot in the entire video - taxi-ing alongside the brand new A220. It officially enters service 1 March and I believe Paul Stewart is flying it on day 1. All going well I'll be on it on 11 March. Agree re safety - more chance of winning the lottery than being involved in a crash.

Well Dennis, you made it on to the TV in Las Vegas, I was cooking dinner, looked up and saw your face on the TV news, my wife was on her laptop looking at hotels for an upcoming trip. When I said "Why is Dennis on tv?", her reaction was "you know him?", "Nope, but I watch his KZfaq channel", her reply was "of course you do"..... Sums up my relaxation time really. From an operations point of view. The hotels are the biggest pain to sort, we work with a number of airlines, luckily these situations are rare, but we have close to 10,000 rooms across Vegas so we can normally find space, it just sucks for the passengers, they will have been lining up to get the vouchers etc from the airline, then lining up to check into the hotels. What we try and get from the airlines is a manifest of who is going where so we can precheck them in, that way it is literally give us your name, 10 seconds to sort and here is your key, you have x amount of a food credit, the bus to take you back to the airport will be leaving at x o'clock. Sadly for whatever reason some airlines just cannot figure this out which makes it harder on everyone.

You are so pleasant, well groomed, positive and carry yourself so very well, Dennis. Your presentation skill is so good that it stole the show from knowing more about Sri Lankan Airline. And reg. you, tats how one's persona should be!! :) Thanks for the lovely review and sharing. Empathizing with the Airline Management, everything will go topsy-turvy when such schedule goes off track; its really so very difficult to handle such un-forseen situation and try to push the schedule back on track; that's where the Airlines Management and Team become super-heroes.

Thank you for the story. I have worked as a cabin crew and flight attendant for 34 years. I retired from American Airlines 10 years ago. Each time we had recurrent emergency training, part of the four-day class would be a review of accidents and incidents made by different airlines. These were shared between airlines so that we could study the entire situation, including interviews with each cabin crew member telling what they saw and what each one did. We always learned something from every video. I was in my 30th year, and as I watched and listened to one person telling her story, she said something that I will never forget. She had been on a plane that ran off a runway in bad weather. The plane was on fire. She was trapped at the rear of the plane and, along with a couple of passengers, was trying to find an opening to escape. As she told of her situation, trying to get out, she said, "I made up my mind that I was not going to die on this airplane." It made such an impression on me. I will tell you that all four of the flight attendants were severely injured and never able to return to work. I will add that a provision in our working agreement with the company is that all crew members receive full pay for the remainder of their lifetime. Safe travels to all. Never forget: "I am not going to die on this airplane."

Once had a nose wheel hydraulic problem coming into land in London with BA, diverted from City to Stansted and I was praying it was straight and dead centre so we didn’t have a repeat of the LA emergency, not least because we had two missed approaches at City and were likely on our last reserves of fuel. These sorts of landings make you so glad to be alive, glad everything turned out ok for you.

Thanks for the great review. Its great to hear on the friendless and dedication of the sri lankan airline flight crew. Yes, they don't have funding to buy bigger and better flights at this stage, however I hope they will bounce back and make it the best airline in south and east asia again as it used to be when I was small in many consecutive years. In mid 90's during the war LTTE destroyed multiple of A340 aircrafts when they were parked in hangers at night which started the decline of the airline then followed by a period the management was given to Emirates airline. As you said, their staff cabin crew had always been great and that was their biggest strength. I used to fly sri lankan airline all the way from Colombo to New York US via Heathrow and emirates used sri lankan airline and its crew for their flights between New York and London which is one of their most important leg. As sri lanka is now back at the top of all tourism catalogues again and its economy recovering fast, this would be the best time for sri lankan air line to recover its finances and make it strong again.

Hi Dennis, this was a unique situation to be involved in. Fortunately for all involved, it didn't escalate to anything more serious and there was no reason for an emergency evacuation. But you went through the situation in a methodical manner, and what to expect should such unexpected situations like this occur, snd what to do to minimise disruptions. Im guessing , You must be the only youtuber who does aviation reviews who has experienced an emergency mid air. looking forward to the unanticipated Malaysian Airline's A350 review mate!

As an Aviation Safety professional, it is nice to see flight crew and airport emergency personnel respond according to their training and procedures! As with all emergencies and irregular operations, handling of passengers and information flow is difficult under any circumstances. Hopefully Sri Lankan Airlines will learn from this event and improve (the hallmark of any aviation organization). Also Dennis who was the reporter from Channel 9? I agree with your tips…last year I was on a cancelled flight from Dublin to the us. We had actually boarded and I was able to hear the flight attendants saying they were going to time out. I managed to quickly booked the following days flight and avoided a 9 hour flight in a middle seat, which is what I would have gotten without having booked a replacement flight. I was refunded the unused portion. Quick decision making to take matters into your own hands is super important

First, thanks for this awesome video with helpful information. It is great to see why staying calm and knowing what to do in these situations is so important. While I work as a software developer (so it cannot be compared directly) , I learnt that the best thing you can do when you deal with waiting during "Unforeseen Circumstances" is to keep the customers updated regularly. For example, every 15-20 minutes, they should call ground staff or engineers or someone aware of the current development. It takes time to find the root cause of the issue, but what you can do is say ..., "We are still investigating the issue", "we are narrowing down possible causes", "We found the issue, and our guess-estimate is 1 hour", and so on. That will change the whole experience. Ps. it is the first time; a crying baby has good use for flight purposes :D Rest well and looking foreword for next review.

As former ticket desk/check in staff, they are usually the last to know. We were reliant on information from Flight Ops who were dealing with the issue with the plane and were busy enough organising engineers to fix the plane, or an alternative plane to charter, making sure air crews are within hours. Over hours they cant legally fly. Checkin/ticket desk staff had to organise rebooking of passengers on to different airlines which took time or organise hotels and transport. What held us up was verbally abusive passengers demanding they be prioritised. In addition, dealing with other flight departures and schedules.

it is the biggest benefit of the alliances as I have had cancelled flights before due to technical reasons and the ground staff are often too frazzled to think clearly and I have made suggestions of alternatives and been able to be rebooked. In 2019 we boarded a Qantas A380 and closed up and then deplaned about 1hr later instead of heading to Singapore with everyone being hoteled but I needed to get there as soon as possible and so suggested I could get there on Cathay via Hong Kong and be there only 1/2 a day late, they were really glad I saw that as it meant they could get about 28 problematic passengers to Singapore.

Glad the emergency was handled well , as for the delays that seems to be the norm these days. Looking on Flight Aware website practically every flight is delayed , some by only 10 minutes or so which I call on time , others by at least 1/2 hour or later . As for Melbourne airport it is looking increasingly like it is getting beyond its use by date with often 6 or 7 aircraft lined up for departure particularly at midday. A second runway is really needed now especially since air travel is now surpassing pre Covid levels .

This high quality presentation seems too good to be true. It would have to have been professionally planned, produced, directed, staged, recorded and edited. This is much more to this than meets the eye. The level of knowledge of civil aviation displayed by the presenter well and truly exceeds the that of a routine airline passenger. Watch this space to see more of this. The upside might be that future viewers learn more about airline and ATC operations.

Air Belgium is currently flying for UL, but with ex-EY metal (A332) with a rather dated J-class product IMO. Not scheduled for MEL though.

A very interesting video. I had two weeks a similar situation where our Ethiopian 737 max got two bursted tyres in Blantyre. We were kept for 5 hours in the plane with hardly any updates of the crew. Airlines apperently can improve their communications in case of an emergency

I used to work on airport check ins....the meal voucher bought check in/ticket desk staff time to rebook or organise hotels for passengers rather than them congregate around the desk and delaying us further. The ticket desk/checkin staff were usually last to know updates. Id ask please be kind to them and dont get angry. Its stressful enough as it is

Hey Dennis. Mate the audio controls must be playing up. The volume has been all over the place in the last couple of videos. I still enjoy watching between turning the volume up and down. I love the information you provide us with. Thank you.🙂

The real drama there was poor Dennis dropping his duty free! We all do that at least once in life and it is never pretty ...

having been involved in two emergency landings over nearly 50yrs of flying, the chances of being involved in one are so slim it is ridiculous! It sounds like everything went well where it needed to and as usual fell apart on the ground in the airport terminal. The hard thing for passengers too is that they are all crashing from an adrenaline high and so are not necessarily at their peak manners and rationality, I guess having walked back through a gate your group looked pretty calm! One of my emergency landings was with TAA as it was then, during the pilots strike in the late 80s and it involved both propellers stalling on a DC3 that had been conscripted into action at the time. I have a photo that my parents took of the plane landing with both props still, but given the DC3 was probably only using the propellers to give direction (and very slight impetus) to the flight we glided in and landed without a drama and being a teenager at the time I just thought it was cool!

A big thank you for this vlog, it’s good to know what can happen in an emergency! I’ve been on some very bumpy flights, however never a return to an airport. 😅 I’m looking forward to your next vlog.

I experienced a very similar situation a few years ago. We stopped once off the runway and firemen boarded. We then went to the gate. Fortunately they had a spare plane 😊
