I was in foster care in Florida in the late 1970s. I had 3 siblings. They split us into 2 homes ... me and my younger brother together and my older brother and sister together. We started out in temporary placements (1-month maximum). Then we were moved to long-term placements. My little brother and I lucked out with THE BEST family possible. My older siblings didn't have as good an experience. My only problem was 2 school changes in 2 months. My older siblings got to stay at the same school the whole time. We got to move in with our Dad (and soon-to-be stepmom) here in Ohio. I am actually still in touch with my foster mother even though we live states apart. I even called to wish her a happy mother's day. She is such a good woman!

I’m in foster care now been in the system since day one of my life I have lost of medical things it fun to go some where new but it does take time to feel safe and I go to the same place It feels now like I’m going to like my aunt s house or my nana and papas I always look forward to my bags of surprises we do things that I normally won’t do at my foster home like trampoline parks movies things like that get spoiled Just having fun in a different space that’s safe and I have fun every kids experience is different I been in foster kid my whole life but every kid handles things different cuz every one’s trauma is different my foster mom always says to me and safe people meet me where iam that means just talk making me feel safe it goes along way in new places

"Life is lifing." I love it! Working in foster care as a case manager, I fully understand that statement. Also, respite is amazing.

I'm a former foster youth - and as crazy as it sounds, I really was glad to not go on a vacation with my foster families. One foster family I lived with went to a family reunion in Cleveland. They stayed with relatives and went to Cedar Point and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - but it was with dozens of their extended family and that's always very awkward for foster kids. I know it probably sounds terrible like 'foster family refuses to take foster kid to Cedar Point", and I would have liked to go on that part, but not the rest of the family reunion. I stayed with a respite family that had a pool, so that was cool. I had probably been in 5-6 homes by that time so it wasn't all of that big of a deal. Vacations are sort of weird and awkward - with far too much "family" time and way more strangers asking stupid questions.

So good to see you making videos and seeing you across other socials in between. Family life can be hard and fostering can be hard but both are also so full of joy. I know you never will but I hope you never feel that pressure to share more than you’re comfortable sharing Sending love to all of your family

Thanks for this video! Helped guide me in a better direction. I’m just starting researching and considering foster to adopt - an older kid or siblings as I learned the diaper stage is not for me. I’m single and I travel for work 8-10 times a year from 3-6 days at a time. I can’t find any information as to what type of care is best for a child or if there are restrictions for me to foster/ adopt. Is respite okay for this? Would hate to have a child always sent to away. Can someone come to my home to take care of the child? Literally am not finding anything that sounds helpful.

In Oregon, the foster parents are charged with finding the respite care folk. The respite care people only need to pass a background check here. I’m about to take on three kids and told DHS in advance that in order to take the kids on, I need to be able to have respite care for a particular time frame that’s already planned and paid for. They told me, “no problem, you can totally have that.” Then when I got further into the process they told me that actually I have to find the respite care person(s) and DHS will reimburse me for so much per day / per child. Then I remembered that when I took on a different emergency three kids four years ago, the same thing happened. I had a mini-vacation already scheduled and paid for and then had to scramble to find someone to watch the kids.

My foster parents make respite As best as they can we set a time to meat who I’m approved to stay with sometime sa night to get use to like a week before then when it’s time my foster mom makes a bag of my favourite snacks like my weekend junk food and a back of my favourite school snacks just snack s and she makes a care back with treats I normally don’t get she goes to dollar tree and 5 below she actually gets like little things and makes grab bag s with notes for each day they r gone and a big bag full of a them. Like simple so my break people. Can have a fun last night with me they put a gift card so I can rent movies And My favourite fast food. For last day
