I Fainted today. (which is why I'm watching this video) and it was the 1st time I ever had. I'm not sure if this happens to everyone but every thing started to sound like I was in a tunnel and there was a sorta black liquid filling up from the bottom to the top of my eyes. After I woke up I couldn't really remember what had happened and it felt like I was up and fine 10 seconds ago. When I woke up it didn't really sound like I was in a tunnel it sounded more like a hissing noise but that dispersed in about 10 minutes. Just wanted to share my experience.

I am an experienced fainter, so can offer a couple of tips. If you feel like you are going to faint, sit down and TELL SOMEONE WHAT IS HAPPENING. Do it quickly. Don't try to fight the unconsciousness, because that could make it happen faster. If you have time, ask for water and something with sugar in it, like a candy bar. Sometimes people pass out from dehydration, but even if that isn't the case, water will feel good and refreshing if you sweated a lot. The sugar will help you regain energy. I used to have a pilonidal cyst, which is a cyst formed right by your tailbone. It kept messing with my vagal nerve, and I would pass out every time I was in pain from it. After it was removed, there are still times that if I hit it just right or get hypertensive, I could still pass out. I've gotten used to it, but I know it can still be a scary feeling. I still am not used to the vulnerability I feel right afterward. Anyway, just keep those tips in mind and hopefully it wont be so scary the next time for you.

I passed out just a few minutes ago and I was hugging my uncle before left he squeezed as the usual so I hugged him, and I felt dizzy and I fainted in his arms and my sister started shouting my grandma cuz I live with her, but my grandma was awake for 16 hours straight so she was in a deep sleep. And I was so scared when I woke up after that faint I thought I was going to die and I'm only 11 and just broke up for the summer holidays.so my uncle gave me water and then just googled what to do after. And yh he found this comment so he gave me a sugary gam with have and a chocolate bar, when I was eating them I get sick, then I threw up. Sad days

I fainted on Feb 20, 2016 twice. I was in American Cultures, watching a video on an expedition across North America(I forget the correct title of the expedition, though it wasn't the L&C one, since they only explored the Louisiana Purchase land, not the entire US). Anyways, members of the expedition got attacked by a bear, and after, they zoomed in on one of them getting their head sewn back together. That's when I felt like I was going to throwup. I thought about asking to go to the bathroom, in case I did, though, I felt dizzy, and just couldn't stand even if I wanted to. Then everything felt like it was in a tunnel and I felt short of breath. Finally, the room slowly got dark. I took a deep breath, and that's when I fainted. I started gaining consciousness, and thought I was still in my bed. I remembered being in class, but thought it was a dream. Since I thought I was still in bed, I panicked at not hearing my alarm, and thought I missed school. Imagine my surprise when I darted awake, and looked around at my shocked classmates and teacher. TLDR, I saw blood and fainted, everyone was scared, and fainting feels like death. Not fun.
@PlumeLoom
@PlumeLoom 8 жыл бұрын
Also, if anyone's curious about the second time I fainted that day, I didn't exactly faint, as I was quickly revived with orange juice before I lost conplete consciousness. I was in the hospital, and they wanted to know if me fainting earlier had to do with blood issues, so they took some blood. I was stupid and watched the whole process, so yeah, the second almost-faint was my fault.
@PlumeLoom
@PlumeLoom 7 жыл бұрын
It was just frightening. I had no idea what was going on. My breathing started going faster and I felt like I could hear my heart beat. Also, yeah, while I was waking back up, it felt like I was in bed. I didn't really see anything. My sight just slowly went black. Also, yes, it felt strangely similar to dreaming. So much so that I thought that it was a dream. Though, the only thing really similar is that the room faded to black. I don't feel scared or nervous when I'm dreaming, but I definitely did while passing out. Also, I was sweating profusely after I woke up.
@PlumeLoom

Well, it's mostly because that was the first and only time it ever happened to me. I had no idea what was going on, so I was freaked out. That's mostly why I feel scared about it.

I know how you feel... I used to faint because of stuff like that all the time, it's horrible it feels like you're dying, much like you said. It's not so much scary to me anymore but I just hate the feeling, it's an icky feeling and I do everything I can to avoid it. The sucky part is people look at people who faint as "weak" or "not manly" It's not something I can control. I don't mind the sight of blood, for me it's more graphical surgical procedures I don't fare well with. It's odd though, because once I pass out over something, it never phases me again?

I fainted in my P.E. lessons after climbing 200 steps within a minute or two. I was taking a rest and trying to regulate my breathing. I even felt fine and cheered for my other classmates who were still doing it. Just then I started hearing 'wheee----' in my ears until I couldn't hear anything. I started to see black dots and they become bigger, then idk what happened. I guess I fainted. When I woke up, I was in a wheelchair with the school doctor XD I had a terrible headache after that which lasts for a day.

Im glad im not the only one with these symptons! I went to the ER because my throat hurt alot and they gave me an needle on my ass and told me to get up (it was 2am, and “there were other patients”) i quickly got up but my ears began to ring so i told my mom i couldn’t hear and she said do u want me to hold u and i said yes, we began walking but as soon as i stood up i started to feel lightheaded and saw these tiny black dots everywhere. I never fainted in my whole life but i felt i was gonna faint. “Im gonna faint” is what i said, my mom replied with “no u won’t” lmao. And yes then i fainted. I then closed my eyes and sat on a chair. I can feel all my body parts but my body doesn't respond at all. I was consciously unconscious for about 1 minute if I'm not mistaken. Then afterwards I gain back my sight. then I felt like my blood was rushing all over my internal organs it made my skin crawl. It was a really horrible experience! I was so helpless !

I never have actually fainted, but many times I have felt like I was about to faint. Its so scary omg. For me, (idk if this was fainting) I was outside playing in the snow and my mom made me all bundled up, and while I was outside, I had this sudden feeling like I need to get inside and sit. So I did and I told my mom I feel like I'm gonna puke. She was helping me get the 100000 layers of clothing off and asking me if I was okay. And lemme tell you everything sounded like I was in a tunnel or something. I was 17 when I fainted for the first time (I'm 20 now) and I remember it was a very weird experience to say the least. I told my mom that I wasn't feeling well but she wouldn't believe me and she told me "just wash your face with some water you'll feel better" so as I was walking towards the bathroom, i started feeling dizzy and very light headed. I actually reached the bathroom but as soon as I was going to turn on (is that what it's called) the fosset, everything I was seeing turned blurry and the sunlight was hurting my eyes and head and then it was at this point that I fainted I guess. but the weird part is that I could hear my mom (screaming my name) and my grandma trying to calm her down (while I was unconscious) but I couldn't respond, it was like I was numb. and then my grandma "sprayed" some holy water on my face (she's VERY religious) and then I woke up and I tried to get up but my legs wouldn't obey. so my mom and grandma had to help me up and get me to the living room. so for a first time, it was pretty...I don't know shocking I guess

I struggle with ptsd from a particularly bad fainting spell where I fell down a flight of stairs, got a concussion and broke my collarbone. When I asked the Doctor what had happened to me, he said, "You fainted and broke your shoulder. Your good to go home." One $4,500 ER bill and two $400 ambulance rides later. I still don't have a great grasp on why I fainted (or why people faint in general). This video gave me more information about my accident in 2 minutes and 25 seconds than doctors have in a year and a half. AND IT WAS FREE!!!!!! Thanks SciShow! You calmed my nerves a little bit :)

Wait, so shouldn't the fainting only happen once the "danger" has passed? Why would your vagus nerve try to recalibrate you if your body is still in fight-or-flight mode?
@dustcloudy
@dustcloudy 9 жыл бұрын
Fourteen Lines The type he was explaining was when you see things like blood. Fight-or-flight mode doesn't last long when you see something like that, since you know you're safe. It's just the sudden shock of seeing it. I think, anyway.

DustCloud Oh, right, thanks! I wonder what happens when you faint because of something like a panic attack, or a situation where the fight-or-flight part lasts longer, then...
@dustcloudy
@dustcloudy 9 жыл бұрын
Fourteen Lines You're welcome. You simply faint after the fight-or-flight part. Fainting only (probably) happens due to low blood pressure in the brain. In a fight-or-flight mode, you have high blood pressure due to build up of adrenaline. It's probably less likely to faint if your nerve has a long time to recalibrate you.

Fourteen Lines Plus, keep in mind that the human body isn't always that perfect. And some things and aspects that help in some circumstances might have side-effects. And then throw in other possible conditions, such as dehydration and low salt content and it becomes even more likely to happen.

Possibly useful when trying to outrun a large predator due to the lost weight. Not so great today though, I can't see that helping too much if you're running away from an assailant.

+ZeldaInuYashalover I don't think you fainted... I think you had a seizure lol I know someone who had an epileptic fit and could hear what we were saying and started yelling out random numbers so we started writing them down as if they meant something, some kind of code. When he was conscious he explained it like he could see what I assume would be something similar to an audio visualisation. So he saw colours and lines everywhere, weird, but he could hear us aswell, like he was dreaming but not at the same time. Half conscious, half not.

I jumped to hang on a bar and I felt like I was going to faint, but I couldn't react in time so I felt like my body relaxed completely and then I lost control. After a few seconds I woke up with my face in dirt and lots of small rocks that were on the ground, few inches away from a block of cement that could have broken my skull. I went inside and discovered that I had a lot of bruises and cuts on my face and also a broken lip. It could have ended way worse than this so thanks to god for having only some minor wounds and that lip I talked about earlier. The morale of the story is that fainting can be extremely dangerous and I just wanted to share with you this little story as I saw that there are some new challenges that involve fainting, or at least in my county.

I'll faint from pain. I injured my ankle playing volleyball in the gym and was able to crawl out of the way to the side. I sat for a bit but when I tried to stand and put some pressure on it I felt my whole body going flush. I quickly sat down and passed out for a second. I was talking to someone at the time and they saw what happened. He noticed I turned pale white before I passed out. I didn't really feel the pain though other than the ache, but I was told that's a natural response to pain.

I've passed out over 20 times. It isn't as bad as people make it out to be. It is as if you fall into a REALLY deep REM sleep for years, yet you are only passed out for a matter of 5 or less seconds. Once you wake up, your body gives you a shot of adrenaline, and you get this extremely pleasant feel. There was a fad going on a while back called The Pass Out Game, where people would do it just for that rush of adrenaline.

+Josh Fletcher That's called a headrush, or Orthostatic Hypotension. It just happens when you stand up too quickly, and blood pools to your feet and legs, usually your body responds to that loss in blood flow by constricting those blood vessels down there to reduce the amount of blood they can carry, but when it doesn't do this fast enough you get sudden dizziness, sometimes even blindness and rarely, fainting.

Something that has been troubling me a lot lately are head-rushes. Like when you stand up really fast and suddenly it's like somebody threw a flashbang right in front of you. It probably has to do with either a rush or decrease in bloodflow to the brain, but a more in-depth response/explanation would be nice.
@crinagel

Eric Roels That is what is known as pre-syncope. It is like you are almost fainting, but your body manages to keep just enough blood going to your brain. If you can, you should buy a blood pressure cuff (the automatic wrist ones are very convenient) and check your blood pressure when sitting down, and then again while standing up. If the top number drops by 20 or the bottom number drops by 10, you could have Orthostatic Hypotenstion. I have something known as Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and it is often related to getting head rushes. You can test for this fairly easily, take your heart rate while sitting down, and again after standing for a few minutes. If your heart rate increase by over 30 bpm, you could have this.

I used to get these kind of fainting spells whenever I'd suffer an accident, or get hit with a round of diarrhea. I only actually blacked out a few times because I instinctively knew to put my head as low as possible - even before I found out about what that awful feeling was. I'd see specks of black increasing in size in my vision, like a ruined television. My skin would get clammy, and my head would feel very heavy and dizzy. At the start of the process, I'd still be able to talk/hear - but as it progressed, my lips would turn purple and I'd almost lose control of my ability to speak, and the world would feel like it was moving further and further away from me because I'd not be able to hear much. My mom used to think I was dramatizing my injury and be yelling at me to stop it while I was fighting to stay cognizant. I'm glad to finally see the medical side of things on this channel, so I can understand what I went through.

So today I went to Victoria secret and I was in line and it was so hot. I didn't eat or drink anything the whole day because I was going to the mall so I thought I'd just eat and drink there. The line was long so I was just standing up for about 5-10 minutes and all of a sudden there was like a buzzing or ringing noise in my ear and I could hear everybody talking and stuff. My knees felt so tight and heavy and i felt like I was about to fall so I got off the line and walked to a chair. When I walked I literally felt so dizzy and sick. Afterwards I wanted to cry and puke but I didn't. I seriously thought I was going to die.

Then all of a sudden...something felt weird. I felt sick like I needed to throw up, then my heart started beating rapidly and my head felt really light. Then, I was sitting down thinking it would help but it got worse. I stood up, walked around a little, then all of a sudden...my body seized and I fell on my face to the ground. Luckily, there were other hikers there and they were so kind. This one lady gave me water and an apple. I hope to find that lady so I can repay her....she saved my life today

+Stevothebevo7 I wouldn't suggest trying this, but if you do REALLY want to find out what it's like, I think I remember how my brother did it a few years back with his mates. Again, this is DANGEROUS so USE CAUTION and make sure there's a responsible adult nearby! First he stood up against a wall with a mattress on the floor for him to land on, he exhaled completely, held his hand over his mouth and had a friend slam into his stomach as hard as they could, and that would knock him out. I don't know how it works but as far as I can remember it does, but it doesn't last for long. Again, USE CAUTION and have a RESPONSIBLE ADULT around incase it goes south! (Lurmey is not responsible for any injuries or other accidents that may arise by using this technique, you had fair warning)

My wife were panicking since she tried to wake me up but she couldn't. Couple of minutes later i regain my consciousness and my family took me to the emergency room, the doctor in charge evaluate my blood pressure, heartbeat rate, also took my blood for a lab test. The result, all was normal and they let me back home with 2 types of medicine. After watching this i guess everything is fine, just a non-serious faint with less oxygen carrying blood going on inside my brain.

I fainted today while at six flags. i don’t know if it’s because i hadnt eaten, the heat, low iron, or all of them together. my mom told me she thought i was dead because my eyes were open, i was completely still and unresponsive. it was scary. ppl were staring and that was the least of my worries. i was scared because i’ve never fainted before. i was out for around 20 seconds but i don’t remember it. i remember starting to get dizzy and blurry vision then seeing black spots. before i knew it my vision was coming back and it was still a little blurry. my mom was above me trying to get me to wake up and there was a huge crowd around me. it took me a few seconds to get up and someone offered me their water and i was thankful. my mom started walking me to the curb so i could sit and my vision started going black again. i almost fainted again but luckily i didn’t. i’m not completely sure what it was from. all i can say is it wasn’t only scary for me but also my mom and all those other ppl because to them it looked like i was dead.

I fainted in the shower once. I got some water in my ear and was rubbing it when suddenly i felt so dizzy and everything went black for a few seconds. then i heard a crash and opened my eyes and i was sitting on the floor of my bathtub and i had knocked over my body wash bottle. I was like "woah what just happened?!"

SciShow, you continue to be suspiciously relevant in my life. Anytime i'm mulling about my normal business and I start pondering something, I can expect that in a mere week at most, you will release a video of a detailed explanation of that exact thing. I mean, I love the videos, but i'm starting to get a little scared.

I had to have a lot of blood drawn for some tests today and i nearly fainted. It really is scary. For a few minutes, i couldn't hear well, i couldn't see well, it felt like i would melt into the chair. But thank god i didn't faint because i've fainted before and i always feel like throwing up afterwards.

Pro-tip: if you're prone to going vagal, always pay attention to what your first symptom is, then either crouch, sit with your head between your knees, or lay down with your knees bent. If you get enough blood back up to your brain in enough time, your nervous system can correct itself without resorting to making you drop. For me, nausea is my first symptom almost every time. It's a creepy kind of queasiness that comes on out of nowhere but slowly gets worse with each passing minute. Then I'll feel the color drain from my face, and if I'm still upright my vision will gray out (looks like static on an old TV) and I'll get dizzy like I'm having a head rush. But I've never completely fainted because somewhere between the nausea and the graying out I'll instinctively crouch (or lay down completely if I can). The worst that's ever happened is I've gotten nauseated enough to throw up. But I've now gotten to a point where if I just position myself the way I need to, put a cold cloth on the back of my neck, and talk through it, in a few minutes I'm back to normal. Used to be I just felt so sick that I didn't want to talk or have anyone talk to me.

Correction, the vagus nerve doesn't correct the error. In fact the vagal tone is suppressed and it is your sympathetic nervous system that corrects it.

Does anyone else have the really awful experience of not actually fainting but being so damn close to it that you just feel like you could die? Also anyone else do it at the most minute problem which shouldn't ever kill you but something says 'shit we are fucking dying'?

Well, this sounds pathetic but I faint when I get strong vaccinations or blood-work. ;-; I usually have to bring something to eat afterwards or I can't due to time. Most of the time I can't help it and I keep thinking to myself, I seriously can't believe that just happened... It's kind of embarrassing to me to just flop numb & have people look at you. Fainting for me is slowly seeing grey and feeling some type of pain around my chest. I feel bad for passing out bc of needles and I wished I could control it (̶c̶r̶i̶)̶ The 1st time I was laughing for no reason & people looked at me like jfc calm down, then I fainted on a chair. ;~; (I was young at the time) 2nd time, it was with my booster every 10 years. I limped out the clinic by myself.

This happened to me today, I started to black out and then all the sudden started everything different, I noticed myself sweating and all I wanted to do was lay down because it helped me a bit. I was fighting myself actually fainting and unconscious. I think what was making me do this was the science teacher in my room presenting the body system, talking about the bones and injuries that teenagers get mostly.

I fainted today for the first time in 22 years and the moment I passed out it was pretty much like falling asleep. Waking up was the worst part. I was concious and I even sat and moved but I couldn't see at all which made me freak out because I thought I was blind. I could hear my mums voice far away and an overwhelming white noise. I was screaming "help , I can't see" but only a few words could be heard, like in a bad dream when you want to wake up but you can't. Sooo crazy and terrifying.

I was 13 when I fainted for the first time ( I'm still 13 now) and I remember that I was waiting in line to go inside a temple's gate when all of a sudden my whole body started hurting, I was trying to tell my aunt that I wasn't feeling good but my voice was too low to be even heard so she couldn't hear me. Then I started to lean on my mom because my whole body hurt alot, I felt like I couldn't stand on my legs anymore and I was also feeling dizzy. Then a second later, I suddenly blacked out. I saw a black bridge like structure when I was blacking out. To me, I couldn't see anything while blacking out but I could still process my thoughts in my brain so I thought to my self, "What's happening? Why can't I open my eyes? Have I fainted? I think I have probably fainted." Then a few seconds later I slowly opened eyes, I was lying on the ground while my dad and my grandma was throwing water on my eyes trying to wake me up. I gained consciousness, My dad was trying to help me walk but I couldn't because my legs would just feel so exhausted that I would try to sit every few seconds on the floor while trying to walk. Then after that My dad finally let me sit at a place to rest. After resting for a bit, I could walk properly without my legs feeling exhausted. Then my dad walked me back to the entrance of the temple, where my uncle was at. My dad asked him whether if he should let me drink anything sweet. My uncle told my dad to give me some sprite because he thought that I might have fainted because of low blood sugar levels (My uncle is a doctor). I asked my cousin sister about this whole incident (she was standing adjacent to me in a different line), she told me that I fell flat on my head and that my eyes were wide open and that my legs were shaking. Oh and she thought I was having a seizure seeing my legs shake. I still don't know why I fainted that day, if any of you guys probably know why then you can comment here 👍 Lol but the experience was weirdly cool, 10/10 would like yo experience it again 😂😂😂

I fainted today and I’m watching this to see if it was normal what I felt. Some classmates told me about a way to faint for a few seconds and I didn’t believe this was possible but well I hyperventilated how they said then held my breath while my friend gently tightened the side of my neck. It was this crazy feeling where I felt dizzy and I remember seeing my friends face for 2 seconds before instantly transporting to me dreaming and totally not remembering anything but I couldn’t see anything in my dream it was like a black screen. Then I slowly wake up confused since half my face is numb and planted on the grass since my friends were not able to catch me and i fell face first into grass. I turn around and stand up shocked wondering what happened and felt like I was asleep for 2 hours, sound slowly started to appear and I heard my friends laughing and I recognized my surroundings and realized what had happened. I was surprised but felt super dizzy I felt like I was going to pass out again. My friends hold me up and took me to get some water. Around 2 minutes later I just felt a little bit dizzy. 20 minutes later I felt perfectly fine but still shocked from the experience. I don’t recomend it to anyone and it caused me a lot of anxiety. I would not try that ever again.
