Our culture has launched an all out assault on the very idea of what it means to be human and it all comes down to identity. Phoenix Hayes, who is the creative director for Cross Examined, joins the podcast to share about her research into this topic. We also chat about how she talks to her kids about gender, and why she is totally fed up with Target.

I love the way Phoenix put the identity thing. Thankfully I came from an older generation and was just labeled a Tom Boy, but I too have always liked non stereotypical things. I grew up and became a Police Officer, in a time when it was not common at all. Im and friends with men easier than I do with women. I find most feminine conversations flighty. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But at the same time I always loved playing with baby dolls and being a girl. I’ve been happily married for 40 years and am the mom of three amazing kids and have one perfect grandchild. And still, I find it hard to have a conversation with a lot of women. But in the end, my identity is in my savior Jesus.

Absolutely fantastic conversation. Especially the section where Phoenix speaks about all the obsession with me. The best explanation for this gender issue I have heard...but also the need for attention and reinventing whatever they are. And thank you for talking about some things that may offend some of us in our culture...such as these men taking over a females identity. That does really offend me. But there is another issue that no one mentions and that is how so many foreigners are coming into our country and changing what was our culture into their culture. And now are demanding we accommodate their cultures. We are losing what made us Americans.

I rarely comment on videos, but THANK YOU FOR THIS. I love the way this conversation was handled and I so appreciate you all sharing. It was so encouraging to hear someone actually make the distinction between biological sex/gender and culturally constructed gender stereotypes and the line of "do you happen to like that thing associated with the opposite sex or are you trying to present/act like the opposite sex?" I feel there's often a neglect of that biblical middle ground and I feel so encouraged. This conversation will definitely help me as I navigate the world of youth ministry with my husband. My son wanted a Moana birthday party when he was 5 years old. Why? Because we'd just taken a trip to Hawaii and her adventure was cool... she was the hero of an amazing story! Hearing about your seven year old mentioning a character having no gender breaks my heart. That isn't even even an age where that should be a concern. This is why my children are home. We have a great support group and co-op for the social aspect, but my main goal is to protect their souls... then give them a good education. THEN make sure that they are socially adjusted. But what being socially adjusted means in this crazy world isn't what they need to be followers of The Way anyway.

Gender ideology has become militant. It isn’t just a presentation of ideas our children are facing but, the fear of physical harm, bullying, cancellation, etc… At an age that kids are needing to learn how to build healthy relationships, learn to work through conflict with words instead of emotional outbursts, and the skills needed to maintain those relationships, they are being berated, screamed at, beat down, and/or physically assaulted. This is an excellent conversation and I love how Phoenix lays out who we are as image bearers of God. Found in Christ.

I have been pondering the fact that the genders are dressing and acting more and more homogeneously. We have dressed more alike for around twenty years and with that came women leaving their homes and working by the "sweat of their brows" to provide and trying to deny the fact that they are uniquely equipped to nurture the next generation ( abortion makes them equal to men). There is also the phenomenon of so many more gender neutral names. I wonder if the transgender movement is somehow linked to the genders becoming more and more alike? Not disagreeing with anything, just expanding with some questions 🤔

Her girlfriend wears pretty dresses and makeup, etc. The one who thinks she’s her lover’s protector and defender even walks in a manly way. At 51 minutes where Alissa says Gen z's biblical position is harmful and causing people to be depressed and commit suicide, what a clever way to push off personal responsibility to another. Ever since our kids were in their terrible two we have been teaching them that their attitudes and reactions belong to them and no one can make them do x y or z, this is something that comes from their heart and must be dealt with by us as parents, then when they are God's new creation, directly with God. It's clever to say the only the Christian perspective is harmful yet in reality it's really the projection of personal sin that's the problem

I come from a region of the world where boycotts started in rich countries have contributed to labor reforms and improvement in human rights, particularly in apparel manufacturing where horrendous labor conditions and even sexual assault was rampant. While it would be practically imposible to boycott every product, I strongly believe that being well informed and joining in boycotts play a critical role in changing some structural injustices. We saw this with the fall of Apartheid in SA and in the USA in the 60s with the European boycott of California wine during the height of Cèsar Chávez/United Farm Workers. As Christians and responsible consumers, we need to put our money where our mouth is. I appreciate this podcast more and more everyday for its bold approach and timely engagement.

From a pokemon fan and sister in Christ 😂: You can tell a Pikachu's gender by looking at its tail. Bit unrelated to main talking point, but in regards to Pikachu, Pokemon in general, and gender, 1. You can actually tell if Pikachu is male or female based on whether or not it has two little humps at the end of its tail. So, if your daughter's pikachu plush has two little humps on its tail, it's female, if not, its male. 2. Pokemon in the video games have different gender ratios. For example the three Pokemon you have the choice of obtaining right at the start of the game all have 75/25 ratio between male to female respectively regardless of the Pokemon's appearance. An interesting bug that occurs because of this happens with the Azumarill evolution line. Azurill has 75/25 female/male ratio. Marill, the evolved form of Azurill, has a 50/50 female/male ratio. Because of this, when you're Azurill evolves into Marill, it has a small chance of changing into a male if it's female. This bug lasted across multiple games and was only fixed when Sword and Shield was released. 3. There are genderless Pokemon, although the official terminology puts them as having an unknown gender. This categorization is used almost exclusively for robot, Legendary, or Mythical Pokemon. This is pretty much just to add interest to breeding as genderless Pokemon can only breed with the Pokemon, Ditto, a genderless which has a special egg group that allows it to breed with any Pokemon regardless of gender. These are all elements that have been present for a very long time within the games, so I highly doubt they are the result of progressive meddling especially considering Pokemon is a Japanese company, Japan being a very conservative country even though Pokemon is definitely one of the more progressive companies out there.

The animes Ranma 1/2 and Sailor Moon at least don't follow your understanding of Japanese culture and society. Their views on more abstract and metaphysical ideas are generally based on their interpretation of Daoism. While the Dao symbol does show the stark contrast between male and female, one of the basic tenets is to be true to one's nature, and not living up to one's nature causes imbalance in the universe, so this widely opens the door to sin and believing lies about oneself, since it would be encouraging us to embrace our fallen nature in whatever direction it would take us; the more we embrace it, the more powerful and heroic we are. This is pretty much the progressive message. I've never seen Pokemon, but as a Christian and former fan of anime, all I can say is please be careful and discerning; a lot of that stuff is demonic.

I would have to disagree with her that the issue of identity is a matter of privilege and it's modern. She made it sound like only people from rich countries have the time and money to be able to ponder upon these things. I come from a poor country, the Philippines surrounded by so many gays and lesbians. It wasn't and isn't a big deal that men cross-dressed. In fact, they were the favorites in many fiesta shows and variety shows on TV. You would meet many children battling with these questions. This is also an issue in many other countries like Thailand. I myself battled gender identity crisis and was in a few same-sex relationships until I came to know the Lord Jesus. Although, the gay movement is much bigger now, specially in Western countries, the question of identity is not modern. We live in a fallen world because of sin and sexuality, including gender identity in general has been broken since after Adam and Eve disobeyed. It is actually dangerous for those of us who used to live this kind of lifestyle to be in denial of our tendencies. It is a recipe for falling into the same pattern. The key is to acknowledge that we constantly have to choose Christ over sin.
