Has Ralph Rangnick improved Manchester United? His Man United side lost 4-0 to Liverpool at Anfield, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United side lost 5-0 to them at Old Trafford.
One goal difference. So has Rangnick actually made a difference?

Rangnick's biggest contribution is his unfiltered criticisms of the club structure and players. He's been here a few months and already the board seem to be finally getting the idea of just how bad things are.

True! And I don't think he would've accepted either role without knowing how big of a task he faced. Sure, he's never been at super rich clubs, but finding good players for smaller fees and turning them into stars USED to be United's MO and Rangnick is capable of that. Yeah, United have splashed at times, but overall it was about finding young, hungry, professional players who were looking to take the next step and I hope the media doesn't pick apart every player he and ETH want to sign, because some of them (if not all) might be goofy or "not big names".

I now think that was the plan all along. Install him as manager and have the players reveal their true selves to him. They'd have thought it was fine, because the guy won't be managing the team for long, but Ralf was taking notes all along and establishing who was worth keeping at the club and who the club would be better off loosing. He was always going to be the future director of football, but being on the training pitch day after day gave him a real sense of the players with integrity.

That’s not quite how the Diaz goal happened - rather than giving it straight to Diaz, Mané played it out to the right, where both Salah and Trent were making a forward run unopposed (because Maguire had stepped up as you say.) Then Salah squared it for Diaz. Otherwise spot on.

"United look like they're doing stuff but they're not actually doing anything" Spot on. Pogba is a master at it. I call it fake press. Sprint towards an opponent and then give them like 2 meter of space to pass through you. Rashford does it as well. He's now added another layer where he's constantly slowly jogging to where the ball is but not with the intention to win the ball back.
@ukie713
@ukie713 2 жыл бұрын
We all call out Pogba for not defending. But we should take a look at how many goals are conceded because Rashford has not tracked back resulting in so many crosses coming in from the left back position. Most of the time our full backs are dragged out of position because out wingers don't track back and our centre backs are caught out having to mark two or more people. Unlike last season Mctomminay and Fred are asked to go forward instead of staying behind and defending. Hence the large number goals conceded. Similarly during attack our attacking players don't run around and find space. Just coasting around for the right ball except for maybe Ronaldo and Cavani.

Maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling that Rangnick initially wanted to implement his playing philosophy, by the 4222 played at the start. But with all the leaks, players complaining and not adapting, he went back to the 4231. However, with injuries to Varane, we've been left with the Lindelof/Maguire pairing, which has always been terrible in transition and as a high line. No summer transfers left the team in the "No midfielders" crisis of right now. I wish I had data on me to quote, but to me it feels like Rangnick's win rate is more a symptom of the club's issues more than a cause. I wonder what would have happened if OGS decided to continue playing with his 2021/22 counter attacking system instead of trying to go high pressing...
@otto_jk

The problem with that is CR7 who is 37. To counter from deep you need young energetic players who can run at the opposing goal the whole 90 minutes. Ronaldo is like a heavy cannon the rest of the team needs to drag in to the box where he can shoot the leathal goal. Because of this you need to win the ball higher and keep possession higher on the pitch.

How many managers do United have to burn through before people stop blaming them? United's squad was a fading force even in Fergie's final season, Fergie was just good enough to paper of the cracks and succeed with them. Look at any other successful club in football and see they recruit with an identity in mind then brought in players and a manager who suited that style. Man United have just been bringing in "star" players and commercial signings and taking a total stab in the dark with hoping a manager will somehow bring them all together. If they weren't doing this then Pogba would be long gone already and Ronaldo would never have arrived. It doesn't take a football genius to see A 37-year-old Ronaldo wasn't suited to the counter-attacking and fast style that Ole was pushing towards, and certainly not to the pressing style Ragnick was expected to implement. So clearly bringing him back was not a footballing decision.

@bobbins5037
@bobbins5037 2 жыл бұрын
@@ItisAbhisek1220 I'm no expert but I can give my opinion on that. Whether it be pressure from the board or just the pressure in general to try and fit Ronaldo into the system, both managers have tried to cater to playing around him instead of maintaining their own philosophy. Ronaldo is an amazing goalscorer, no one can deny that. He can single handedly win matches because of that, again, hard to argue against it. But he doesn't really provide anything else on the pitch. This works in superior teams like Real Madrid or Juventus in their respective leagues, when you expect to dominate games and just need someone to finish the job. I imagine if he ended up at Manchester City he would have fit perfectly, just because of how they dominate games. Man United lack the quality in areas around him to dominate games in the same manner as the above clubs, and I think the attempts to try and shoehorn him into their system when it isn't a fit OR change the system to suit him have put them in some kind of limbo where you don't really have a clue what they are. Perhaps you and other people will disagree, but I vaguely remember an interview quote with one of Juve's players saying how they are a better TEAM without him. Ten Hag needs to give Maguire and the rest of the defence a chance to reset and go back to basics. Focus on keeping a solid defensive line that doesn't get dragged out of position, then implement pressing principles once the very basics are right. I get the feeling that when he first came in he tried to get them to play his way, but they couldn’t keep it up, he had to change systems to get a tune out of them. Statistically, the team should be better, it’s unreal to say but you can’t account for players like Ronaldo and Bruno missing as many chances as they have. And now it just feels like the team have downed tools, and Ralf isn’t the kind of manager who will waste his time inspiring players to work hard when they don’t want to be there and won’t be there next season. Feels like he’s given them a plan, and they’ve decided to abandon it as soon as they got on the pitch. And Maguire... He clearly left something in Greece because he hasn’t been the same player since. Maybe he got Space Jammed and there’s an alien running around with a massive head playing against David Beckham and the Looney Toons.

Maguire is massively overrated from 1 good tournament performance where England had the easiest path, not playing any of the favourites until a semi _(and of course because he's English)_ He has always been average at best. I mean how many "partners for Maguire" do Utd need to go through before they realize the problem. He isn't a ball player, he isn't a stone wall, he isn't overpowering in the air, he's not faster or particularly stronger than any other CB in the league...

The video showed this clearly. They don't press, the midfield and fullbacks then have to abandon their positions to do the forwards pressing for them, good teams like Liverpool know how to play through this, now McGuire has to cover for the fullbacks and midfielders who are out of position because they were covering for the forwards who did not press properly, and it's a goal. McGuire is an easy target, but if everyone ahead of his is in position, he knows what to do from there. He must, because he did enough to earn an 80 million transfer to Man United. It was kinda striking in this (+ Maram's article a week ago) is how uninvolved De Gea is in all of this. Stuck on his line at all times so offers absolutely no sweeping presence if the defense is a little higher, and in no way a passing option at any other time, e.g. for that final example if it had been flipped, the Liverpool defenders would have had no problem going back to Alisson rather than trying to hit a harder ball out wide. De Gea clearly isn't "The Problem" but for all his incredible shot stopping he definitely does also exacerbate some of Manchester United's issues elsewhere.

Ngl, if I was playing in this team and I look at who's infront of me...i wouldn't leave my line either. Knowing at any given moment an error may come, would really not instill the confidence to go forward. Alisson, Ederson know that they have world class players capable of playing from the back and keeping control of the ball...easy for them to keep their calm with their teams. Not saying De Gea is a sweeper keeper, but in this team, I understand why he wouldn't leave his line
@alastairtemple
@alastairtemple 2 жыл бұрын
@@kylejanse2632 Sure, his lack of confidence in what is going on in front of him is going to encourage him to do what is most natural and safe to him, stay on his line, and if it was working better in front it would be easier to try and get him to come off his line. Like I said he isn't "The Problem" (neither for that matter is any individual player there, who could all be either a starter or a good squad player in a coherently built squad), but it is still interesting to note that his weaknesses are in areas do make some of the weaknesses elsewhere worse or more obvious. He isn't causing Matic and McTominay et al. to sit in the cover shadow and not be decent passing options, but the fact that he isn't remotely an option does make pressing traps on the midfield and CBs easier. Likewise he isn't the cause of Maguire being sucked completely out of position like JJ showed, but the fact that he will be standing pretty much on his line when it happens means that the space is huge and that the weight of the pass can pretty much disregard any chance of him sweeping it up and makes that pass easier to make as you only need to make sure the weight is far enough ahead to outrun the defense, and not have to make sure it is also short enough he won't reach it. It shows the importance of thinking not simply about individual players in isolation, but how they fit in with the other players around them too.

When Jurgen Klopp lost Van Dyk he struggled (relatively) while the rest of the squad was still his but did not change the way he played. Ralph doesn't have his team and is still playing the football he wants to play so he will struggle and which hopefully will weed out the players that don't fit what he wants to do. I don't want him as manager as I think he'll be a better fit upstairs but that doesn't mean is a terrible coach. Put simply, he will not play his football to suit the players he's got and the players have to either fit the mould of the football the manager wants to play or they go.

They're waiting for another manager (who we now know is Ten Hag) to come in and tell them how to play. I wonder if that psychologically leaves them in a state of limbo at the moment. Combined with the fact I don't really think the players are on board with him as a leader, anyway. Whatever, the indecision and pressing of Liverpool unnerved United's defence to the point they were playing like Sunday leaguers at times. Moreover, how are things supposed to change with the same players, who are given license by management to havethe same mentality, by managers who put the brand over on-field quality. Honestly, this side was absolutely the wrong people to play Rangnick-ball with. And without the freedom to weed this out, improvement was never going to happen. So what has he done? This tactical analysis also highlights that Maguire is not the one to blame for the goals, but rather the last one in a long chain of events and wrong decisions on the pitch. He's probably even trying to fix the mess that his teammates left him, but that's too little too late (and he also makes a mistake). He’s the type of manager who expects desire, initiative, and tenacity from his players, which this squad clearly lacks. Incredibly disappointing season, but maybe we need a season without CL and even EL so we can purely focus on a rebuild (tbh winning a trophy like the FA Cup or EFL Cup will mean more than making it to the knockout stage of CL). It’ll mean we probably wont sign the most elite players, but that doesnt seem to matter a whole lot to a manager like ten Hag anyway. Get rid of the deadwood, restructure our recruiting, use next season to start from scratch Every season we usually start off strong and hopeful, then we suffer injuries and drop points in winter, then play catch up the rest of the season. @@jackphillips6742 you think a captains armband is the sole reason de gea hasn't done that already? God forbid a football team has multiple, non designated leaders who can speak up

And you see, that bad pass from Lindelof shouldn’t have resulted in a break for Liverpool given we still had a 6 on 4 advantage to defend. Ralf “compact” defense got torn appart.

For years we've been saying these United players largely average. especially Rashford he was so overhyped. If you know football you could see 3 years ago that United would end up in this position.

Funny enough, the Irish Guy predicted Rashford's downfall about 3 years ago.

you can use tactics to break down the goals but ultimately it's personel. The first goal starts from De get putting the ball out for a throw under no pressure at all, and then after some very basic Liverpool build up Maguire press poorly timed, then gets caught flat footed as the ball goes past him and then they've scored. Maguire was at fault for arguably every goal Liverpool scored. If there's a centre half with a better understanding, better pace and better ability in general that doesn't happen. And the problem is Maguire has been doing this all season.

question: which young player or players, 16 to 24 maybe, should each premier league side sign, excluding watford and norwich , okay maybe not should, because realistically leeds couldnt possibly sign a player like Bellingham, so lets keep it realistic

Common denominator at United through five managers post-Ferguson is the board, and across several managers the players. The club is structurally dysfunctional - the manager doesn’t even matter at this point. Until the structural and ownership related issues are solved they’ll keep failing, it doesn’t matter who the personnel are.

The best way to counter their flaws in pair a 3 man midfield… to cover spaces… and make one play like a DLP … hope maguire can be his leicester form… he is doing soo many unnecessary things which he never did at leicester

He just got a head start for ten haag. Anybody who looked at his managerial appointment should see that as an obvious thing he did. He also got to see who adapts to instructions, who trains well and more importantly who has the actual ability to carry out a fluid game plan.
