A Martinez shares memories of being awestruck by actor Bruce Dern and the diverse acting choices the two-time Oscar nominee made during the filming of 'THE COWBOYS.' Emmy-winner Martinez watched mesmerized as Dern repeatedly changed his villainous variations of 'Longhair' in scene after frightening scene, going deeper into character in take after take of the Mark Rydell-directed classic.
Dern wasn't the only one on that revered Western to offer acting tips. Duke himself gave the young Marinez pointers on what it takes to sell a movie punch in a fight. Always observant, the young actor was cast in an early role on his family's favorite, 'BONANZA,' and got to see his heroes firsthand, witnessing the genius of Michael Landon in working out and improving a complex scene.

A Martinez would be someone I would be awestruck if I saw him in a hardware store. I'd probably scare him by yelling, "Good Lord!". He has always been one of my favorites. What he did on "Longmire" was amazing.

Thank you for that. One of my fondest memories was with my father. Sitting in the theater. Watching The Cowboys. I saw my daddy cry for the first time. My father was a tough man. I learned so much about my father and me. Watching that movie.

"All right. We've seen what you can do with a boy. How are you when they come a little bigger?" One of the Duke's best lines ever. As a kid watching this movie for the first time I leapt up and cheered when he said that. John Wayne became my role model and to this day, I can't abide or tolerate a bully, I won't raise my hand to a woman and I won't be insulted without responding. Thanks, Duke.....you're still my hero.

I've always had an irrational dislike of Bruce Dern. I'm guessing it dates back to "The Cowboys" which I saw at age 7. Dern does an amazing job of playing those smarmy evil characters, acting a bully when they can, and then like Eddie Haskell in front of authority.

@@MrVvulf: Yes. I liked his "bad" roles, though, seeing what skill he put into the little things that tip one off to his inner turmoil. Dern calls those tweaks "Dernsies," though I think one of his directors made up the term. Even as a good guy, he commanded our attention (e.g "Silent Running"). And when he played the blimp captain in "Black Sunday." Nowadays I look for his roles as an aged bad guy, such as in "Big Love."

A's take on Bruce Dern and learning from watching him was interesting in the extreme. For instance, first rule of acting when doing a scene with a method actor given to improv, particularly one specializing in playing psychopaths: It's a good idea to upgrade your medical insurance. But to totally appreciate Dern's range and mastery of his art, you really need to watch his work in its exstremes, such as his highly convincing psycho in "The Cowboys, and then the equally entertaining comedic role he did for Hitchcock in "Family Plot". Love this thoughtful interview with A, no slouch as an actor himself, and am again sadly reminded how much I miss his character in "Longmire".

I appreciate how Mr. Martinez relates how his early family and school life laid the groundwork for his successful career. Too many successful folk, not just in show business, act as if they emerged, like Athena from the head of Zeus, as a fully formed genius.

Damn, this was a great episode. A Martinez tells his recollections with a humility and clarity that is just astounding. He as an actor has always been a compelling screen presence, and I've enjoyed his previous appearances on this series.Together you and him talk and delve in the heart of the story. Your greatest skill as an interviewer, is that you don't actually interview. You probe, lead and question in a way that brings out the best of your guests. A Martinez is the perfect individual to respond to you. He is self deprecating about his own involvement in many great productions, while describing the actors, directors, and producers he worked with and for. This was en extremely enjoyable, an informative episode. A true master class in what happens when it's done right. What happens, magic, magic happens, and that what you and A gave your audience.

It seems over the years that he was always in some movie or tv show, I've been watching him playing Jacob Nighthorse in Longmire and as usual he delivers so obviously he took all those lessons to heart and used them well.

As someone who has done extra work in movies I have seen very talented actors work also, and have enjoyed watching that part of the process. When A Martinez brought up his watching the hanging seen in The Cowboys I understood it all as I too learned the lessons. No I am not an actor. However that scene in the movie is so very well done between those two that I wished that I was on the set to watch it filmed. I was very young and absolutely (still absolutely do) loved John Wayne when the Cowboys (on TV) appeared in my life. I am now 57. I have a visceral hatred of Bruce Dern. I know, type casting. Sorry, but facts are facts. It is really too bad that John Wayne did not kill Bruce Dern in the Shootist. Maybe it would have squared the books. Just sayin.

Fantastic! Rob, you began with “How did you first decide to be an actor?” A Martinez gracious humble recognition of his school teacher in his 7th grade year- That was the key to all the stories he humbly told on Michael Landon, Johnny Carson, Angie Dickinson, Bruce Dern and the Duke. I’ve found a similar question the best guide to knowing if I’ll have a great doctor or a doctor. My first question I ask is - “What impressed you to become the doctor you are?” The humble recognition of someone’s influence on them let’s me know I’ve got a great one, or I move on to another. It’s worked for me over 50 years. Thanks Rob, you’re a star in your own right.

Great interview, Rob! I am a fan of A. Martinez. He was great in "The Cowboys" and I have followed his career since. He is especially good in a two-part episode of "CSI" titled "A Bullet Runs Through It" and in "Longmire." There were so many great actors in "The Cowboys.," Roscoe Lee Brown. Bruce Dern, and of course John Wayne, but so many seem to overlook Slim Pickens who was a great actor and I hear a great acting teacher. I wonder if A. Martinez learned anything from Slim Pickens.

I so wish Dern had done his auto bio as an audio book. Dern, in the eighties had performed a great rendition of William Goldman's HEAT, I have it on cassette tape. Dern has such a unique delivery. In reading Dern's book you can hear his voice on the page... but I'd love to have it as an audio book as done by Dern.

Great interview!! The cowboys would NOT have been the same without this guy. Actually, when I first saw it in the theater, I really thought Cimeron was going to put a gun at the campfire scene and waste Dern right in front of his men. I thought his character was that tough.

That was outstanding by both of you. Couple things stood out, his mention about the “wisdom of a pension” shows he is grounded. Your comment about being gobsmacked by how gorgeous Angie Dickinson was and then blurting it out was hilarious and a very unassuming grounded comment as well. I enjoyed this very much.

This is Bruce Dern's 87th birthday and I am reminded of something I didn't know about him. Several years ago I was reading Runner's World magazine and found an interview with him on the back page, In it he stated that he had been running 5 miles a day his entire adult life (when possible).

I got to see, The cowboys, this past weekend. I am a true western fan, and have been, since, I was a child. And one of my all time favorite, Western stars ⭐️, hands down, has got to be, The incomparable Bruce Dern. What an actor, and his ability, to add the Craziness to his acting, just made him all the more that much more of a A lister, to me. I not to long ago, found out That, his daughter, is, Laura Dern, wow. I see why A. Martinez would mention , Bruce Dern as someone, who he admired. So did I. A. Martinez is a very humble man and is also a good actor, as well. He seem to be, to me a little, star struck, on The Cowboys, with, John Wayne and Bruce Dern. I can understand it, tho. Two Legends. 💙

Dern, one of my favorites since I was a kid, and saw him on Gunsmoke and other early westerns. For years I couldn't understand why he wasn't better known. Being a motorcycle nut since I saw my uncles (I was hauled around in his saddlebags when I was in diapers, no the lids weren't on) I always wanted him to star in a biker type movie. Terribly unappreciated and underrated.

Hi, Pete. Dernsie was always one of my favorites, too. He was in the classic biker film THE WILD ANGELS (1966) as "Loser." It's his wake that the gang attends. He also starred in the (sort of) cult classic CYCLE SAVAGES (1969).

@@AWordonWesterns The real Loser in that movie was the dreary gangly Peter Fonda, I can not stand that guy in anything. How was that man in any movie? He was a third rate knockoff of the great Eastwood. The Hired hand is exalted as one of the great westerns but Fonda just gives his customary wooden performance. Fonda just makes my skin crawl, he gives off wayward hippie vibes; he was the gaunt summation of 60's counterculture and that whole mellow melancholy drugged out dreary music incoherent derelict hellion garbage

I especially liked his tough guy attitude at first and then he melts into the group. Especially like him I the fallen angles with Colleen Dewhearst. The cowboys was just an awesome movie. Bruce Dern was the guy you liked to hate. You knew he was lying and John Wayne’s character knew it as well from the very start. The cowboys is just a great movie. And of course one can’t forget Mr Nilgtlingers prayer.

We so enjoy the interviews you do and learn so much more about the stars that have played in movies throughout our lives and. I loved this one since A admitted that he too has been star stuck with the stars he has acted with in different movies and how well the whole learning process of working with others whom he has been schooled as they worked making those movies so believable. Thanks for these videos of the interviews, we love them.

I was asking for an interview of mr martinez a while back as usual rob you delivered. REFRESHING TO SEE that he can still be starstruck after a 56 years career with his work known all over the world. As usual i discovered something that is cassie & co with angie and him. Funny trivia he played also a street hoodlum (blink and you miss him) in an elvis presley and mary tyle moore's change of habit.
