SPOILERS - - Ok - so I've heard some things about some other Colleen Hoover books as well that seem pretty problematic to me. I worked as a professional advocate for women (and one man) who had experienced domestic violence and sexual assault. First, leaving an abusive relationship can be the most dangerous part of that relationship as the abuser is losing their power and control over the other person. If the abuser in this book recognized his issues and got help, great, but he won't change without some serious help (that's just not the way it works). If the woman left, great, but that doesn't mean she won't find a new abusive relationship - she also needs some therapy. AND to assume that a child won't make the same mistakes because the parents broke up - let me tell you - that is just pure BS. Children are not as resilient as we think they are - they are sponges. Of course not all children will become victims or abusers if they grew up in a abusive home, but just having the parents split is not going to be the difference between a healthy or unhealthy adulthood. Trauma for children who experience domestic violence (even if never directed towards them personally) is a real thing. Also, do you know how many relationships I saw where the woman left, they divorced, and then the children still had to see the father for visitation? I could go on an on, but suffice it to say that the assumption of a healthy child simply because the parents split is absolutely ridiculous. I even worked with women who split from their partners before they ever came to see us because, with a child in the mix, the abuser was still in that person's life and was still trying to control it. If you know someone experiencing DV, don't just tell them to leave - that could literally kill them - also, it's their life and their choice. If they tell you about the abuse, say "I believe you, I'm here for you, it's not your fault." Connect them with their local domestic violence nonprofit or call 1-800-799-7923 (SAFE). I'll get off my soapbox now. Thank you.

Ok I agree, it ends with us (SPOILERS) Ryle should’ve been in jail at the end or charged. I understand why Lily didn’t charge him but I rly wish he was punished more, he would go on to abuse someone else most likely.

@@Kaylinnf56 yeah. I think we’re supposed to assume the daughter wouldn’t face abuse from her father, as Lily didn’t, only her mother did, but I just found the ending somewhat unsatisfying. I get what you’re saying though, abusers aren’t all the same and just because Lily’s dad didn’t abuse her doesn’t mean Ryle wouldn’t abuse the daughter. It’s morbid to be speculating that but for the sake of the topic I am. Men like Ryle don’t deserve second chances. I do understand Colleen’s intentions but wish for a different ending.

we have the same feelings on it ends with us. i like that the abuse wasn't romanticized but it could've been deeper. i know someone who's been in an abusive relationship. she said to me that one thing that made her enter the relationship in the first place is the serenity she felt every time she was with him. he was placid, caring, and seems like a very good guy. then of course the horror kicked in about 6 months in and she was SHOOKT! what i hate about the book is that ryle is a waving red flag and lily's still enamored of him. it would've been impactful if the change was slow and subtle. i also didn't like that the sister who did nothing to mitigate the situation or to avoid it in the first place. that's just my two coins. this comment would be super long if i listed the things that rubbed me the wrong way.

ooh yes same!! it was my first coleen hoover book and i was so disappointed. like there's unnecessary romance (ive only read one other coho books which is it ends with us, it had the same problem, unnecessary romance, i see a trend) then there was the confusing plot twist which kinda ruined the book for me since i was ready to give it 2.5 stars before it. mc was annoying, hated the love interest and just,, yeah. i feel like the first line was only added for the sake of having "cool first line" and not something that'd actually help.

Major nostalgia throwback for the Graceling series!! Like a lot of people in the comments, Fire was my fave of the series, and Bitterblue is also very good and follows Bitterblue about 10 years after the events of Graceling (it also has a better developed kind of puzzle solving element because this character is still dealing with the after-effects of "youknowwho" in her kingdom).

Hey Cari! You said you were open for any book recommendations so I really want to recommend this new book I read, The Sword of Kaigen. It was AMAZING. Such a great read. It's a standalone fantasy and it is unbelievable just how much worldbuilding and plot the author was able to put into one book, and also it was an amazing character study too. The two main characters are 14 year old Mamoru and his mother, Misaki. It has elemental magic and heavy on politics and war too. I just highly recommend it! Totally agreed to read the Author’s Note to put in perspective of all that happens in the book. This was just one case of domestic abuse and one that the author’s mother went through herself, so it was quite personal for her. I usually don’t like books that are super romantic but this had realistic elements of life of what a tough situations people find each in and with each other. It’s a hard situation and could have ended in tragedy. And it was tragic, the loss of a relationship she (Lily) had started and had with Ryle. She made the decision to end her marriage with someone she loved completely, but knew it would only end horrifically if she stayed. And she does mention the character herself say that she had the means to take care herself financially unlike her mother who was stuck. I bought this book and read it in a week and still thinking about it months later. It really stuck with me in significant way.

I love Graceling, definitely has the nostalgia factor for me. All the books are kind of written to be standalone, but they have really good links. My favourite was Bitterblue. It's a bit more of a court mystery (similar to Descendant of the Crane) but features characters and plot points from both Bitterblue and Fire. Winterkeep was also good, but if definitely more of a continuation of Bitterblue. If you read them I hope you enjoy the rest of the books!

I think what she meant that her daughter wouldn’t have the same relationship with Ryle that lily had with her father. Her father abused her mother , but he did lots of nice think too but lily doesn’t remember them or doesn’t even consider them cause we only remember the bad stuff. So after her daughter is born , she says that this circle is broken.” It’s stops here. With me and you. It ends with us”,she means that lily’s daughter wouldn’t hate Ryle the way , lily hate her father that in his Funeral she doesn’t have any nice thing to say about her dad. Not even one. Lily actually says in her monologue that Ryle is a very good, charming, caring person so she doesn’t want her daughter to hate her father the way she did . So I think it’s more about breaking the bad father daughter relationship. Also At the end of the book “note from the author “ you would find how Colleen’s mother was in a similar situation and she left her husband so that her children would have a better future at growing up and found a person who would treat her and them in a right way , they deserve. So it’s not about that lily’s future husband or bf wouldn’t be Abusive , it’s more about she will not grow up the way lily did in a Abusive household.

I would agree with that but in the end it shows that their daughter is going to be spending lots of time with ryle and still having a good relationship with him and who is to say that he wont later date another woman and their daughter witnesses that abuse? sure he said he would never want another relationship but can we believe a liar like that? lily should have either completely cut him off, or tried to actively get him help. Saying that simply breaking up and coparenting with healthy boundaries is enough to protect their daughter seems waaaay too oversimplified for me.

@@caricanread I actually agree with you in some way. I feel like Ryle never did tried enough to change himself and if in future lily’s daughter watch her father abuse someone else then she can hate her father all she wants. It’s more like Lily give Ryle a chance to be better for his daughter, the way he never did for lily. To be have a nice relationship with his daughter. Btw I love your videos.❤️

okay listen, i absolutely love graceling, the world is just so unique and fun and the characters are dear to my heart. i first read this when i was about 14 but recently reread it in english (bc i read it in german first) and it’s still amazing. having said that though, im going to convince you to read the rest of the series now. it gets better with every book. seriously. fire has a different world entirely - or at least a very different part of the same world - but it ties so nicely into bitterblue’s story in the third book as well. and don’t even get me started on winterkeep. these books are worth the read for the worldbuilding alone but that’s not their only strong point. you get to see the characters grow and - in bitterblue‘s case - grow up. you get to learn secrets of a world you didn’t even know existed and you probably didn’t even care about until you opened the book. but that’s the case for many great books, that’s what makes them great. hope i convinced you. if not, at least i got to spill all my love for this series :)

Thank you for giving an honest review of it ends with us. All I've seen is people raving about how romantic it is and how much they love one of the love interests. But as the child of parents divorced because of domestic violence (and I don't speak to my father because of it) there is no way I would have been able to read it. I would have been both upset by memories and irritated by how simplified it seems to be in the book

I think that Colleen Hoover was less trying to give the perfect example of what to do in an abusive relationship, but what can end up happening. I understand that you didn't enjoy or agree with the ending but the authors note really helps you understand that she was mirroring the example of her mother's decisions in an effort to amplify what women in that situation are going through, and that yes Ryle should have been punished more but Colleen isn't saying that he didn't deserve that, but give the people who haven't experienced a relationship like that a window into why men might not face charges or more severe punishment, that you don't always just stop loving that person.

as a survivor of DA, I liked her forgiveness to begin with, since it’s so real and makes it more human, but after the 3rd time?? and she literally has a child on the way and still lets this man be the father of her child? nah man. when has he proven that he can control himself? never. I could never trust a man like that. I may have put my own needs aside for an abusive spouse, but I’d never put my child’s safety at risk for an abuser 💀💀 so dumb

I’ll forever recommend Tairen Soul Series as an epic high fantasy romance. This series is so good to me, it’s definitely been described as chick-lit (which is my vibe for sure but I didn’t feel those vibes when I read it) but it basically is about the Tairen Soul (fae mixed with another race) who is the King of the Fae. His people are dying off and he can’t figure out why, but as he’s searching for a cure he finds Ellie Barristani. This book has slow burn romance, different magical races (elves, mages, etc), politics, and friendship. I love love this series and you just gotta look past the covers which are very reminiscent of the time they were written lol
