8 to 16 weeks old is such an important time in a puppy’s life. They learn so easily, the good and the bad so take advantage of this period to create the behavior you want so you’re not fixing bad behavior later

⭐️ Outline for the first 4 months: First two things Larry teaches: ⛔️ Leave it & Out Then: 💫 Recall 🎾 Lots of play 🍖 Luring with food into basics: Sit, Down, Place 🐶 While puppy provide structure to avoid bad behavior, don’t give puppy free reign when unattended 🐕 Work on exposing dogs to different environments, focus on being neutral to all things

It's true, there is so much information available online that's it's so overwhelming for first time dog owners! We have a four month old Rottweiler, and we did extensive research before getting her. I'm so thankful that I've found your channel this past month, I've really been applying a lot of what you do. Sasha is incredible off-leash, she needs to know where my husband and I are at all times, but when she feels too far, she comes right for us. We definitely need to work on the leave it command and out command, but so far, she is a great pup!

Larry, thank you for posting all these great tips. Next week I'm picking up my first Malinois male. He is 4 month old. He is getting 2 months of basic protection and bite work. We have a two years old labrador that I've been training in your style since she was 8 weeks. Best dog we ever had. my main failure with my Lab is the recall (she knows 30 other commands). I'm taking your advice of puppy attention and engagement with my Lab starting tonight.

I have a 6 month old who is insecure about new dogs we come across (hackles up, growls quietly), and crazy about my roommate's dog. I would love for him to be more neutral about both, but I'm kind of at a loss. I've really enjoyed your videos! Incorporating a difference between praising and releasing has been particularly helpful.

Beauuuuuuuutiful truth and boom. “Leave it” was the first thing I taught my lil rescued mutt, (welcomed him in at 4.5 months with zero education before that), and he sponged it up like a CHAMP. Had him fetching and dropping within the first backyard play session too. I think I like fetch even more than Dino... And almost as much as I dig that fab Jersey accent of yers. ;)

The first thing i teach all my foster dogs, including 8 week old puppies is the place and stay with duration command ( i usually direct them to a doggie bed on the floor). I find that since these are the easiest commands to teach it helps establish the relationship and confidence in the dog, which makes subsequent training easier. It is also extremely useful when you need the dog/puppy to settle down while you are cleaning his pen, doing something else in the room, when visitors come, etc.

I really appreciate all that you share. I have a 4 yr old Ridgeback and just rehomed a 7 month old Ridgeback. Both entire. The older dog isn’t openly aggressive and they get on great on free walks. But I don’t think he is that happy with the new addition - grumbles under his breath, refuses to sleep next to the pup, either stalks him or runs away and hides inside the house. Would appreciate some advice - happy to pay for a consultation- I just can’t find a website or contact for you. Thanks again for your awesome work and sharing.

Could you please help explain the E collars should not be a constant relying collar to be on a dog. I'm seeing so many dog right now that are wearing a release collar, and E collar, and a prong collar, gentle head harness...all these tool at the same time. Becoming a fade in service dog trend. What happens to positive motivation training that took time as compared to training in minutes. Do you feel obedient comes quicker with the mature and manners as a dog enters adulthood if train over time, love leash training. Agree that people get feather ruffled over the subject of collars or harnesses..

I can't really take my puppy home until she's 4 months old. I'm taking her for two weeks a week apart this month but then I have to leave the country for three weeks. Will any work I've done with her in the coming weeks be lost by the time I take her properly? Am I setting myself up for trouble here or will 4 months still be plenty young to teach her what behaviour I expect from her?

Hi Larry: Although I don't have a dog presently (my last three have been GSD), I plan on getting another when I can devote all of my time to a dog and its training. I'm semi-retired and single, so when I'm done with part-time work, I'll begin looking in earnest...You are about the only trainer whose videos actually show how to train a dog. I didn't know what a "touch pad" and "place" were or their purpose until I watched your video. I live in rural Maine and have large lawns, fields, and woods on my property in which to train and play with a dog. I would like to learn basic sport work just to keep my dog fit and happy... Most of the KZfaq videos I've watched show the results of training but not the actual training itself. Very frustrating! Are they afraid they'll lose business if they show an actual training session? Anyway, I'll keeping watching your videos in anticipation of getting a puppy in the future. Thank you so much.

I’m on track Larry, My only regret was not teaching the “leave it” command first. ‘That is so valuable with a high herding breed dog and chickens. My pup is 4mo old long haired German Shepherd. and knows all you listed and more. I also include at the very beginning, putting my hands in the food bowl, taking the bowl away, asking the pup to step back in the middle of eating. I have grand babies, and never want to have a food aggressive dog around my grand babies. With that said, I teach the grand babies to respect the dog while it is eating. I am still concerned about socialization. I have an older Great Dane (10). Who doesn’t want anything to do with the new 4mo. pup. Is her lack of playing harming the new pup? Do you have any advise on what to do about playing well with others.

You don't use an e-collar for training. You use it for proofing. So...you can use it as soon as your dogs are well trained and you can introduce it to your dog a couple of weeks before that.

I've always gotten dogs from shelters that are already grown, I'm thinking about getting a little pitbull/lab mix puppy soon and it will be the first time I raise a dog from a puppy. I hope to raise her to be really affectionate and loving towards me. The dogs I've gotten as adults from shelters have been somewhat indifferent, they don't seem to get very attached and aren't all that affectionate. Maybe it was just the breeds, but I'm hoping that raising one from a puppy will make her so.

Life in Pieces there are a few of his videos explaining this dude. Basically he asks the dog to get into a position on a place of his choosing. Like a mat or a bed or even on top of a crate. Just somewhere where the dog can be positioned for further training to occur. I.e place, stay..... come. Thats what ive got from it anyway.

We've got a 16 week old AKC German Shepherd and she knows some commands. Such as "Sit", "Down" obviously she's still learning. I babysit a 19 month old child. When is a good age to where they can be together? Currently they are separated by baby gate. Pup is kept in kitchen and toddler elsewhere. They see each other and such. I feel that they aren't ready to be together. As I feel that either one of them understands each other. As they are still learning. When is a good age to put them together? Or let them be in the same room together? Thank you!

@mariabydesign9686
@mariabydesign9686 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm not certain I can post a reply - but here goes. We just got our 5th Rottie (Our lst after we saw The Omen on opening day many moons ago). I'll just add my criteria. 1st) you need a 'large breed' plus 'puppy combination. Rotties are fast growing - In may The Duke was 15 pds,. Now December - he's 85 pds and still growing...till 18 months. Just 'puppy' is not enough. You will want to be on 'puppy' status for at least a year 2) You want to avoid food or treats with 'onion, garlic , sugar. I used to get 'whatever', but have since come to learn the ingredients and the source of the ingredients are crucial. You want to focus on USA manufactured. (The U.S. has more stringent regulations). this includes bones and treats 3) you will want to look at the list of ingredients. K9's are carnivorous - so you don't want something with lots of grains (fillers). 4) if and when you change from one brand to another you absolutely 'must' do it ever so slowly or else the stools are endlessly loose. Hope that gets you started.

@Weirdanimalboy
@Weirdanimalboy 6 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I prefer a knee jerk that knocks the dog to the side and a firm "No". But most dogs that have jumped on me aren't as exuberant as some may be (I know Labs and Goldens can come at you like a bat out of hell). Something more forceful may be needed for those. If all else fails, I'd request the owner to curb their dog.

All dog trainers have their techniques and my argue that they are right and others are wrong. It all started at the moment of mating and then to the breeder and owner. So basically you get what you get. As for what to teach first depends on the dog but my feeling is start with attention training. Obedience follows later on. The leash is the physical connection to the dog. But long lining the dog does not give full control, when a puppy has to go they have to go. Its training and conditioning.

Does the “neutral” feeling towards other dogs and people come as a by product from training and keeping the puppy close to you? Or do you tell them to “leave it” when they’re around other dogs? That’s my goal, neutral reaction. That’s how our 8 year old dachshund is, nothing phases him.

#1. What's a place command?-- If you're going to recall an audience you should train us at every opportunity to understand the verbage. #2. I teach them to leave it, because leave it works!-- ok, sounds good, now here's where you insert: "check out xyz video for a great tutorial." Or better yet, links in your notes! Isn't kind of fucked up to keep them basically on lock down for the entire beginning of their lives?? Seems like a little lazy to me. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm sure its effective but it just seems more or less like you are giving them a 2 year sentence and they've done nothing wrong. . . AND I don't feel like you should keep your dog away from people who want to see him. . Just my thoughts.

Alex C my dog said you are an ignorant A hole. I scolded her and sent her to the corner. I don't where she picks up this language.
