Here's the bit where I pretend I'm a sage, old, wisened nurse and share that advice with you! Over a decade ago I walked into my first nursing job and I've learned so much since then. In today's panel discussion we will go over all the advice we wish we would have known as new nurses, to help combat the chaos that is the world of nursing at the moment. Being a new grad nurse is hard, and it's even harder when most of the nursing community is upset with the career itself. It wasn't always like this, and I hope we can turn all of this anger into something productive so that new nurses are once again excited to join the field. And it starts by empowering current nurses to stand up and fight against the healthcare system by leveraging the experience of others.

As Covid Vaccine mandates become more popular, I have a few thoughts as to what is ethically the right move here. Covid vaccination decreases spread of illness, and will decrease likelihood of transmission to patients. However the vaccine mandate may cause more nurses to leave already short staffed units, making working conditions more unsafe. And costing more lives in the end.

We used to have IV teams, lab support, respiratory therapists, CNA's, designated staffing ratios, Charge RN's that did not have a patient assignment, hours you could count on, a shift now and then that did not suck, and one boss per unit. And that WAS HARD ENOUGH!!! CEO's fired all the support services. Thank-you for the video!!!

As someone who has dealt with a lot of doctors that "know best," it was refreshing when my NP said "let me get another set of eyes that is more experiences with this specific matter." I love her and I finally feel heard. All of my NPs and PAs have been amazing. I have met very few doctors that were actually great - and most were recent grads that were telling me to be a NP or PA because medical school was not worth it.

I have a BSN But a LPN taught me how to do my job. You HAVE to have respect for EVERYONE. I’ve only refused to take care of one patient. He was a child murder. I have lost a child and I just couldn’t deal with it.

I love my nurse colleagues so much ! I’m A hospital based speech pathologist for 18 years . I love to be educated by nurses as well as I love to assist my nurse colleagues with their questions about aphasia, dysphagia, cognitive issues, etc that our patients have. We are all on the same team

Loved this video and so appreciated all the panelists sharing so openly about the negatives and positives! I'm an RN with over seventeen years experience but am still humble and admit when I don't know something or make a mistake. I personally love and am supportive of all my co-workers, especially new staff. I always say good morning to everyone from the doctors to the ancillary staff. I feel you get more flies with honey than with vinegar. I feel if I'm nice and helpful then people are more willing to return the favor if I need help. And yes, there are still times that I ask for help, have a question, or want to run something by another nurse for advice on how to help my patient. I'm always open to learn something new and try to always keep an open mind. At my hospital I work 12hrs day shifts and my shift starts at 7am. I always look at my patients BEFORE OR AS I'm getting report. I always introduce myself to them and then when I leave I say I will be back later. I line up all the meds I need to give them on my cart ready to scan them with my WOW(workstation on wheels) right before I go into the patients room. I then say hello, have your meds, etc, and go over each med with them. Then as I'm opening all the individually wrapped pills, I asked them if they sleep well last night or how they're feeling. One thing I do is I don't tend to call them by name, I will say mame, sir, or just start talking to them. Or I will say Mr Smith, Ms. Jones. After seeing this video, I will from now on ask them how they want to be addressed, Sir, John, or Mr. Smith, etc., write that on my report sheet and refer to it throughout my shift. See, I'm still learning. Lol 😆 Thanks so much for sharing! ; ) 💕 💞

10 years ago, I interviewed for a med-surg and the patio ratios were 1:9 😳 with 3 more if LPN calls out. No thank you.

Congrats Tammy. Psych nursing is awesome, if that’s your jam. When I was a new RN my first position was i psych admissions and I absolutely loved it. I stayed there for 3 years before I moved on. You’ll learn communication skills that will stay with you a lifetime. Best of luck to you.

I did NOT want to start in med-surg either. I went straight into psych and loved it. Like Nurse Liz said you can always learn skills. Congratulations. One piece of advice that I would like to share is to have good relationships with the techs. I learned more about pt care from them than my fellow nurses. There were many times that it was a tech who helped me perform pt care and shielded me from getting hit. I have the upmost respect for them. Without them, nurses would not be able to do their jobs.

@@tanyasanchez5662 whether it’s on a pay CB unit, med/surg or ALF, techs/CNAs are some of the most unappreciated, poorly paid people around, in comparison to the tremendous work that they do. I couldn’t agree with you more. Your passion for psych nursing is palpable, so I’m sure you’ll kill it. I start a PMHNP program next week. I look forward to getting back to my nursing roots. In so many ways, those roots have been the foundation for absolutely every other nursing field I’ve worked in. Therapeutic communication and Dr-escalation skills are something many non-psych RNs struggle with.

Yes, I had to quit to focus on my last two semesters of school which was heavy with didactic on pediatrics and women's health. I'm so glad I did because there was no way I could be able to do clinical and didactic at the same time. I do miss my team, but I know eventually I have to practice self care. =)

I totally agree. I think you need to do what’s right for you. I had a nurse manager tell me once that my school schedule was not going to meet the operational needs, and my response was well then I don’t think this job is meeting my personal operational needs. Therefore, submitted my two weeks notice the following day, and to see the change in behavior of the nurse manager after she told me that was nauseating as she practically begged me to stay. However, I didn’t and focused on my clinical schedule, and picked up a per diem job to meet my needs, and for higher pay and also remember that medical insurance is offered often through the university you attend so don’t let that hold you back, and or stay in a job due to a nurse manager guilting you, and do what works for you!

Had a homecare patient call me at home-never visited her again! That ended our nurse patient relationship! She had long asked for my phone number-but used directory assistance. I had mentioned town where I lived.

@Nurse liz, let me say I love your channel. I love your prospective and all the opinions both popular and unpopular. I wish more people where as open and honest as you are on your platform. Someone made mention of new being confident in the skills that they have especially the nurses from different backgrounds. I have a 18 year background as a Respiratory Therapist prior to transitioning to nursing( LPN x 2yrs, RN x 1yr), but I still find it comical that "seasoned" nurses get so caught up on me being I new nurse that they feel that I cannot teach them anything or are dismissive to my assessments/ opinions. I would love for you to make a video about second career nurses and the asset it brings to the nursing world.

Listening to this discussion has made me realize how fortunate I am. I went a basically all white school (there were 3 black people in my class. I remember being in my OB clinical. And a white student said,” I don’t know why those people keep having children.”. My instructor told her,” If you think everyone you care for is going to look like you. You’re mistaken. Your job is to render care with compassion, not judgement. If you can’t do that, you need to change your profession!” We were taught that we were the doctors colleague. Not their slave, always advocate for my patients, and I controlled my patients room. And how to make everyone aware of that. Also, had a class on how different cultures react to illness. It also gave us a few death traditions about some culture. In addition, we had to learn small things like a Jewish person has a rabbi, a Muslim has an Iman, and catholic/Episcopalian has a priest.

When Melody said "what if you have a prejudice as a nurse?" I was thinking "well don't, easy" but then ... it came to mind someone that's openly racist or willfully stupid and I think I'd have problems treating them but ... yea, guess I'd just need to get over it. Everyone's a customer of the system and the faster you treat them, the faster they get out.

I would love to a cultural video. I have been in areas that were extremely different. 10 years of my education/childhood was spent in Dallas, TX which had such a diverse population. I grew up with so many ethnicities, cultures, religions, & LGBTQ affiliated people. As an adult I moved to a small town in IL and started nursing school. It was interesting to be among people who did not experience such a diverse population. It is overwhelmingly a white population here. I found that there were students who might not have even realized they had biases until it was presented to them. They were so used to growing up with a highly majority white christian straight population.

Normal feeling, promise. Been nursing between LPN and then RN a total of 20 yrs, it is tough at first but you WILL get there. The advice about avoiding the negative is valid. No sugar coating, but those type of comments are not helpful to anyone, esp. not when you are getting your sea legs, lol. You can do it:)

This brought back a lot of memories. During my practical, I worked on a women’s medical floor. I enjoyed it. The goal of the practical was for me to be able to do everything my preceptor did. After I graduated, I was offered a job in the ICU. This was one of the worst periods of my life. On the one hand, I was throughly trained. On the other hand, I was hazed. Some nurses think that will make you a better nurse. “Eating your young.” is a nursing tradition. It needs to stop! No one helped me. And I used my anger to become stubborn. The more they harassed me, the more determined I became. Don’t despair. Use the time to learn all you can. After your training, you can leave or stay. Do what’s best for you. Finally, don’t participate in this behavior.

Yup, I used to have a thing for nurses. Dated truckloads, married two. Now I know better. Stay away, there’s a reason why they became nurses and it hardly ever is because they’re trying to help others. Just sayin.

Nobody talks about the Bible and who the Real Physician is...Our Creator🙌❤ I was new in 2018 and went thru Hell! I was 46...I was a CPA for a longtime and felt I was in wrong field. Then C 19 knew day 1 this was evil powers taking over..yep I can go back and remember all the bs in accounting field. Yes....why are most nurses bitches? Saying in love....but the most backstabbing profession ever...no teamwork😪 I literally got 8 days of training...on 2 diff shifts and 5 diff floors as brand new nurse. Cant learn this way I'm sorry😪
