I made this video almost two years after installing a Rheem Tankless (On Demand) Gas Water Heater.
I struggled to find concentric vent pipes and correct gas line sizes at my local stores. So I figured I would make a heads up video so that other DIYers can plan accordingly.

This is one DIY project that can’t replace skilled trades and knowledge. There are gas piping sizing and gas meter sizing calculations to consider. Most residential gas meters are 250 CFH. A 200,000 BTU tankless would consume 200 CFH, leaving only 50 CFH for remaining gas appliances in the home. A gas furnace would put this over the top. Therefore, gas meter and regulator would need upsizing.

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. kzfaq.infoUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

I recently installed Rheem condensing 199k unit. Did my research. Had gas company upgrade my meter. Ran 1" decreasing to 3/4" black pipe all the way to unit. Ran 2" pvc intake and exhaust. Installed lime scale filter on cold water inlet pipe along with service valves. Will change yearly. I have pump and hoses to descale with vinegar yearly. Ran 1/2" increasing to 3/4" pvc condensation line through wall to outside. Also will clean out cold inlet filter biyearly. I'm not gonna say these units are easy to install but with some prep and knowledge I believe a handy homeowner CAN install and maintain one of these units and save alot of $$. LOVE MY RHEEM. Can't wait to see electrical savings over 50 g electric tank that it replaced.

Good job, I'm a plumber and I will say you did it right! The Rheem 199K btu condensing models are great units, very reliable and have good quality controls. I have one and have sold many with no issues. Have even taught a few customers to flush the heat exchanger with vinegar themselves saving them a biannual service call. We always installed a whole house filter and they will greatly reduce build up also. The Rheem has a maintenance reminder you can set on the control board dip switches ( see manual) it will give you an 88 warning code every 500 hrs of use. Follow the flushing instructions exactly as they will close the bypass valve ( inside unit not the service valves on the outside bottom) so all the flushing will go through the heat exchanger where it should.

Pulled out my Rheem and installed a Navien about 10 years ago. The Rheem failed about once a year and error code required a burner assembly cleaning. Wasn't dirty. It was a known problem. Got a replacement control board and still had issues. My house has a salt/water softener system and I've not cleaned the Navien with vinegar yet but plan on it soon. The NPE-240A has an internal pump just in case you have a facet that takes a while before you get hot water. I haven't touched it in 10 years but started researching cleaning and adding the pump feature to get hot water to the kitchen quicker. I bought another Navien for a retirement house, I liked it so good. It uses 2 inch PVC pipe for the vents. Cheap and easy. I've got a 1 1/2" gas feed line into my home so we were OK on the gas feed. The Navien had a 3/4" gas line supply line with a 5/8 for the last connection.

The new Rheem's are amazingly reliable. You can buy water treatment kits for any tankless that will reduce the amount of cleaning you need to do. Im a plumber and many times the high efficiency units are less to install due to the PVC venting. Rheem has a 2" PVC vent system that's a great unit. The Naviens are also great units as well.

Naviens are trash. I get so many no heat no HW on those units. Almost always burnt up board or 3 way valve. Unit leaks combustion gasses into the cabinet causing the cabinet temp to rise causing oil to be extracted out of the plast parts. Also the board gets damaged by the increased temp. Oh and combustion gasses leak into the house. Drilled a hole on the side of one and put my combustion meter in. Was reading 25co.

I bought a Noritz tankless and had it installed almost a decade ago. Love it. So glad I got rid of my tank. My plumber told me all the parts I needed, and I got them from a local plumbing supply store rather than Home Depot. Some things you just gotta go elsewhere to get all the components. Moved it outside so that we didn’t have to deal with the exhaust vent issues. Also moved it outside because the inside pipe was 1/2” and the tank required 3/4”, so the plumber ran a new line from the gas meter to the new location and capped off the pipe at the old tank location. Converted the old tank closet into a better storage closet so got an extra win there too. They make different size tankless units depending on how many bathrooms and how heavy your usage is. They aren’t a one size fits all kind of thing.

And yes, sweating copper pipe takes practice and skill. I am glad I understand some of the basics, and can make good connections (sometimes with more effort than should be required) but if I am installing something important or something that is going to get buried in the wall for decades, I’m going to call a plumber rather than trust my amateur sweating skills.

A freaking headache to find all the parts to get this unit to work. What i want to know is would this setup b a problem in the long run? The valve connected to the unit just acts as an extension since there is another gas valve coming from the wall. I kinda missed my tank waterheater, produces hot water alot faster than tankless and less maintenance. Received a few hundred bucks from gas company after install so price wasnt so bad after. just installed one of these today. the author of the video is not kidding about the vent pipes. they won't have them in the store and forget about elbows. we ended up getting a 5" sheet metal tube and a 3" sheet metal tube and rigging the double pipe setup ourselves. the 3" tube is your vent and the 5" is your air intake. It wasn't that hard, but it took a good bit of rigging to get it done. Fortunately for us, this was a first time gas appliance install, so when we ran the gas lines we just went with 3/4" all the way from the meter to the utility room.

You will need to call customer support and they’ll walk you through diagnostic’s. Then the part will need to be mailed. Hopefully two days later if you pay for the overnight. I’ve never found a place that carries parts for these tankless w/h. The other problem is when the power goes out, so does your “hot” water. Where a tank would be just fine. Fine job on the install, next time you will be much better at it from what you learned. I know it can be frustrating being a hopeless do it yourselfer like me. I live in a very rural area and getting a "professional" to install and service anything is hit and miss at best. May take tons of research to get a job done right but you will never regret learning something. Yes I installed a Rinnai (condensing) tankless 2 years ago and it has been flawless. Way cheaper to run on propane than the electric heater I had for 25 years. One of my professional horror stories goes like this. Had a "professional" install a steam boiler in a commercial building. The unit flooded at random since day one and not infrequent water damage up to the second floor of the building. Steam radiators dump water out the steam vents when flooded with water. 3 "professionals" from different companies including the installer hired to fix it and failed. Probably 5 total fix attempts. I sold the building to a friend and I told him I would have it fixed. Yes I had to fix it myself, float valve defective and hitting the top of the housing. Yes the vaIve was installed correct/level. I just put a dent in the float where it struck the housing and guess what no more flooding and my friend said the boiler ran perfect for years and never flooded once. I told him I had to fix it myself so he was aware that it was a looser DIYer that had to fix it. Funny how the construction codes require a licensed professional but never mandate a professional outcome. I am a professional (medical) and never complain about DIYers. Just help people when they need help whether they are the cause of their misfortune or not and skip the "I'm a professional and better than everyone else" attitude.

Not all plumbers do installs properly. And the ones who install, they Jerry-rig many installations by not having proper or right parts at the job site; they won’t get the right parts because time is money for both him and customer. Mjoe is correct. The exhaust / Air intake pipe is called a concentric vent pipe. Rheem uses a Stainless steel one. If you get a higher efficiency one called a condensing model it will require 2" PVC vent and intake pipes. Rheem condensing units require both pipes. Some units say you can use just the one pipe but be very careful with that as you will need a very large amount of air in the room for it to work. As a plumber i dont install these unless they have an air grille large enough to support that type of installation. Calculations can be found online. If there is a lot of venting it may be cheaper overall to use the higher efficiency unit which costs more than the mid efficiency unit the video maker installed. These are very technical units that really are best left to a proffessional plumber unless you have all the tools and ability and you follow instructions very well. @@joshuagoudie2849

The reason the heater has a three-quarter inch inlet for the fuel supply is because it needs that many BTU of gas to work properly. it is likely going to be running extremely lean and will either not work to its name plate capacity or cause other problems to the heat exchanger in short order.

The gas savings from tankless water heaters is small. It’s take about the lifetime of the heater to pay off, like 15+ years, compared to tank system. The big advantage of tankless is that you can run 3+ showers at the same time, and do laundry at the same time. If 2 showers for 20 minutes at the same time is all you need, a 50 gallon tank is also all you need. Holding hot water after it’s hot doesn’t need much gas. For most people, tank system is perfect and there’s lot of info about them.

There is a code calculation that determines the size of the line you need. You have to take into account everything on the main line and anything it feeds. I put gas pipe into a 1947 house I refurbished for a daughter 10 years ago and with everything it was going to support, the first 10 feet had to be 1" then dropped to 3/4" at the T. @@funnyfarm5555 some people misunderstand gas pipe sizing. You can not reduce your main until you've actually reduced the BTU load. The main starting out is sized to total load of all appliances, and the distance to the furthest appliance. This distance is used for all calculations. The branch to each appliance off of the main is calculated using its BTU load, and again, the distance to furthest appliance. After each appliance, you can recalculate the size of the main using the total load of remaining appliances, and again, distance to furthest appliance. You cannot size gas pipe 10' at a time, unless your furthest distance happens to be 10'. Sizing used to be done slightly different, sizing each branch off of the main from the appliance back to the meter, but now the branches are sized to the furthest appliance from meter, as is the main. This is covered in the International Fuel Gas Code Section 402. I've been a licensed gas fitter in Idaho, and Washington State.

I have 199,000 Rinnai in my personal home with 3 bathrooms, kitchen, washroom, I can turn on all 10 fixtures and consistently get 125° water at all times at each fixture. You do not need to oversize these units, they produce hot water much faster than you think they would. Hopefully you won't have any error codes but if you do, it would be much cheaper to take the L and buy the correct tankless than switching out the gas lines, good day to all!

What’s up with the coiled up drain line?
@6251steve
@6251steve 2 жыл бұрын
Rheem mid efficiency units do have a condensate drain that connects to the vent. You have to get a short piece of 5/8" clear hose and run down the side of the unit. It should be pig tailed ( run hose in a loop and zip ty so it stays in that shape then fill with water. It's rare in my experience as a plumber that any condensate comes out of hose. But I have seen units fail due to not connecting drain hose to that fitting. The maker of this video has way too much hose.

I see some inaccurate statements in the comments about the gas line. It's the ID of the pipe + distance, the Rheem units allow for 1/2 inch less than 25 ft. They also tell you how to roughly do the math on your gas needs for your whole home. I had a licensed plumber review my 1/2 to 3/4 connection and he said it was fine.

There’s a kit you can buy with a pump and cleaning solution, which should be done every year. Units can slowly stop producing as much hot water because of scale buildup inside the heater piping reducing flow and essentially making the pipe “thicker” so the flame doesn’t heat the water as well. You can reuse the pump each year and just use vinegar to remove the buildup

Upsizing a gas line by using a 1/2'' to 3/4 inch pipe isn't really fixing the problem as the homes other gas appliances may experience a loss of gas pressure when the water heater runs. Trying to cheat in any fashion doesn't usually work out to well for folks who do this sort of thing. Yes even some contractors will do stupid things but that doesn't mean they are correct/right. BUy, use the proper sized model or just stay with you what you already have in the home/business. IMHO.

Good points. That's one reason I spent a long time researching tankless models and features before settling on one that minimized the specialized components, like double wall stainless venting, etc. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kKeTp5ZmmsXDdKc.html Even so, I ran into availability issues with some of the 3" PVC venting fittings, because that's not a commonly used/stocked size. I recall browsing the selection of fittings and noted there were lots of PVC fittings and there were lots of larger fittings. But what I missed was that the larger fittings were ABS and not PVC. I also chose a heater designed to work with 1/2" gas line. Spending a bit more for a condensing model heater ended up saving money in the install by using PVC venting and the existing 1/2" gas line.

Tankless is the only way to go mine is a rinnia 299k btunuse for hot water heat and hot water I'll never go back to a tank.
