Sales Engineering is different that many other jobs. It's more of a sport than a job. There are many skills to master, many problems to solve, and sales engineers are not generally provided the coaching needed to excel.
In this video I share 6 things I would do differently if I were to start all over again.

Amazing video.. You just gave me 10 years of your lessons distilled into a 10 min video. I'm looking to break into the SE space and I feel you just gave me some foundational pillars to grab onto. Thanks for that!

All good points. If I were to start over, I wouldn't! But if I did, I would have a much different experience now than in 2004 or so. I would definitely take case studies MUCH more seriously. They are not the boring bullet point lists of business bullsh*t the SE has to wait to finish before the demo starts. They are the cook book, the play book, the cheat codes. Knowing the product can be hiding. I also read Solution Selling 1st after years of pain. Made little sense without the sales background. Peter Cohan made sense in Great Demo! But still took years of experience.

Really good solid advice. S = sales. The one thing I would add is as an SE you need to produce meetings at the engineer level. Your account manager is working the C suite. You need to work bottom up with engineer to the director level in the sales process. Smartest engineers are in TAC. Sales Engineers are in the field. Smartest engineer does not make the best SE.

Just getting into SE and im loving this field. As a person with general IT background ( I studied ICT & Business for a bachelor), I always found myself interested the technology but never in programming. When you say you focused loads on understanding the technology, does that translate to building applications and raw programming, or the general understanding for the tech itself and its possibilities? many thanks!
@WeTheSalesEngineers
@WeTheSalesEngineers 5 ай бұрын
Most SE jobs don't translate into building applications. The SE has the application that they would like to sell, and they show the customer how it works. Now some SEs have to customize the application, so some programming and API knowledge is helpful. As for understanding the tech itself, it is dependent on the org. For example if you're selling firewalls, you don't need to know how to build a firewall, but you need to know how a firewall operates, the tech it uses (SSL, ACLs, etc) and the value it brings to the customer. What is a great starting point regarding SE? What work experience cooresponds to SE roles the best? Is a university degree be needed? Is ''technical sales manager'' the same as SE? Or what would setup a new SE with the best foundations?
@WeTheSalesEngineers
@WeTheSalesEngineers Ай бұрын
Support, Professional Services, Customer success are good roles. University degrees are needed for some SE roles, especially in networking and security, but it's not impossible to get a job otherwise. You might need certifications. Technical Sales Manager is a salesperson. Best foundation for SEs is the technical skills and you can build some human skills on top of that.

@@WeTheSalesEngineers Both would be helpful. For me, in looking to break into the field of SE, but most people really in their SE career could benefit from a bootcamp to diversify/ improve their skills 😁
