Just to notice, the word "nego" in Paraíba's flag comes form the verb "negar", in english "to deny". In portuguese it is usual to conjugate the verb without to subject so "[Eu] nego" means "I deny". There is an historical reason for that.

Just a fact: before the independence of Brazil, Pernambuco has declared independence and became a country for a while. By the way, the Pernambuco state flag is the same as the (old)Republic of Pernambuco

1)The reason Brazil stayed united with it's independence was a lot more simple and relates to the exposed fact around the Portuguese monarchy. Brazil wasn't a simple colony since 1808, when Napoleon invaded Portugal and the monarch+court fled to Brazil, changing its status from colony to United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves. So it was completely different from the Spanish colonies, which were always extremely divided. Also, the prince and heir to the throne was in itself another unifying factor, actually being respected and liked as a Brazilian and not a Portuguese. But all the administrative structures and central government in Rio de Janeiro was well established for years before the independence. 2)The water access argument is 100% wrong, since the water in the Amazon region doesn't serve the southern regions. Besides the 67% is probably only considering the surface water, since one of the biggest (if not the biggest) aquifer on the planet is located between the Center-West, South-East and South regions! With the greates amount and the best freshwater. 3)The military is the 2nd largest on the Americas (only behind the US) and isn't evenly distributed, having already big administrative divisions and many more units concentrated in few states like Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. And considering the Navy, for example, most of it is in Rio de Janeiro, with smaller concentrations in very few ports in other states. But areas like the Amazon still have lots of units, including a specialized jungle warfare unit and training facility.

Actually Rio Grande do Sul haven't "always failed", there were lots of wars because of charque ( a kind of dry meat with salt), the brazilian government put higher taxes for the charque from Rio Grande than the charque from other countries, so the war was succesful, the taxes had decreased and Rio Grande do Sul even became idependent for a while, forming the República Rio Grandence

9:29, just to clarify: that word means "I deny it". It's the verb "negar" at the first person of the indicative. Although, even in portuguese, it sounds strange and many people think its the substantive "nego", that means black person, not like the lookalike word in English, that would be "preto", that literally means black, but we consider that to have the same meaning as the n word... well... anyway... usually we would use the first-person of the indicative with the prounon "eu" (I). Portuguese admits implícit prounon, so the way it was written on the flag isn't wrong but ain't usual either. I think they wrote like that for esthetic reasons, but it would look horrendous either way. Lmao

“Nego” vem do verbo “negar” em português, o que significaria em inglês “Denial”, “to deny”, o que em português seria “renúncia” ou “negar”... isso a tradução ao pé da letra, mas se um americano ou alguém que fala inglês vê isso, a pessoa vai pensar que “nego” significa “nigga”, e em alguns casos pode até ser, dependendo de como e pra qual propósito é usado essa palavra... pois pra população negra existem essas palavras “negro, nego, preto” e etc.. por isso pensam que a tradução é “nigga” mas nesse caso não é. Nesse caso o “nego” vem do verbo “negar”(renúncia) ou seja, “denial, ou deny”
